the brown and white lehigh university f s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 33 tuesday march 5,1996 all the lehigh news first fire destroys room in drinker by michelle de mooy news editor the smell of smoke and burnt hickory still lingers outside of room 201 in drinker house it is a reminder of the fire that displaced almost 200 students for at least four hours friday night the police are still investigating the cir cumstances surrounding the cause of the fire according to students who witnessed the fire the alarm went off around 7:30 p.m on the a2 hall a lehigh police officer was the first to arrive on the scene trucks from the bethlehem fire department came in rapid succession ryan wintrode 99 was sitting in his room playing a game when he noticed a small amount of smoke coming from his closet i only noticed a little bit of smoke but when i opened my closet door there were huge orange flames from top to bottom wintrode said b vv photo by mark rubins approximately 200 residents were evacuated from drinker house friday night as the bethlehem fire department battled the flames coming from room 201 rotc surmounts weekend training by patrick doherty news writer rotc cadets from lehigh and other area schools redefined the term weekend warriors when they battled through extensive training exercises at fort indian town gap this past weekend most of the training consisted of military operations in urban terrain known as mount according to capt steve nott rotc adviser for the junior class and commanding officer for this field exercise mount involves eliminating enemy personnel in buildings as quickly and as effi ciently as possible it's the most physically demanding thing a soldier can do nott said speed is essential and there's no hiding the greatest danger of mount is from the consider able advantages enjoyed by the defenders nott estimated that a five-to-one ratio of attackers to defenders was required for a successful operation nott said mount is much deadlier than a police raid because of the addition of booby traps in rooms and snipers on rooftops another risk is fratricide the acci dental killing of a comrade b vv photo by pete sa yer rotc cadets were transported from sayre field to their training exercise in a chinook helicopter friday alpha phi sorority to move on hill by chelsea meeks news writer alpha phi will become the first sorority to permanently break the gender barrier on the hill later this fall we have been working for a long time to enable a sorority to move permanently onto the hill lehigh president peter likins said both the lehigh plan and the residential environment report called for putting at least two sororities on the hill by 1998 it is very fitting that the first sorority alpha phi will move onto the hill this year as we celebrate 25 years of undergraduate women at lehigh alpha phi will be moving into building 98 on upper sayre park road which was for merly occupied by pi lambda phi fraternity pi lam voluntarily relinquished the house last summer for financial reasons the fraternity is considering recolonizing as a substance-free house at another location on campus tina kunkin 98 president of alpha phi is enthusiastic about the new house we are very excited about being the first sorority ever to move into a permanent house on the hill kunkin said we are looking forward to moving and renovating the house and we want to thank the school for giving us a chance to do this jennifer cilano 98 alpha phi vice pres ident believes the new house will strengthen the bond among the sisters we are making history by being the first sorority to have permanent hill residence cilano said i think this will do a lot for house unity and spirit alpha phi alumni will always have a place to come during alumni weekends and we will also be able to have our parents up lo the new house during par ents weekends alpha phi was the first sorority colonized at lehigh it was established in 1975 four years after the first undergraduate women were admitted to the university current alpha phi occupies congdon house in the centennial i residence complex there are s7 sisters in the house including new pledges the new house will accommodate a maxi mum of 65 residents david joseph director of residential ser vices and alpha phi's faculty advisor said see fire page 4 see rotc pace 6 see move page ft tssssmmmmif^m y^ff *'*' ml __-___» men's and women's hoop teams bow out of the patriot league tournament early see page 16 sports 13-16 ben irwin 14 golf 15 men's tennis 15 students get their groove on at the nsbe fundraiser at the stage door see page 3 news 1-6 world news briefs 2 open mic night 5 the existence of anti matter may be the first step in discovering the molecular nature of matter in the universe see page 7 science 7-9 science briefs 9 q¥k the average lead pencil will draw a line 35 miles long or write approximately 50,000 english words source 2,201 amazing facts by david louis
