the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 1 03 no 32 tuesday march 1 1996 all the lehigh news first ifc rules no additional expansion by kristen chanley assistant news editor the interfraternity council passed a reso lution regarding expansion or recolonization of fraternities tuesday in general terms the resolution states the ifc will not be approving applications for any new fraternity houses the ifc does not have room for any new fraternities ben malekzadeh 96 ifc presi dent said our greek life is striving to sustain capacity as it is if our current fraternities are in danger why should we make it worse by adding new fraternities according to the ifc this policy is tempo rary and will only be in effect until the current fraternities can get settled and comfortable with the residential life policy the resolution would keep fraternities that are coming back as early as next year from being a part of the ifc mark erickson dean of students is pleased with the general direction of the pro posal but thinks fraternities that already have agreements with the university to come back should not be excluded from the ifc we cannot totally turn our backs on groups that we are committed to erickson said according to malekzadeh the resolution was designed for the well being of future fra ternities as well as current fraternities the policy protects the houses that are borderline right now and works to protect future houses from danger as well malekzadeh said jordan karp 97 ifc judicial vice presi dent agrees with malekzadeh that the resolu tion is a step in the right direction this is something that we have to do karp said for the number of undergraduates at lehigh we have one of the highest number of fraternities but we don't have enough manpow er to support more erickson stressed the fact that there is more to be considered in making this policy by breaking the agreement between the university and new fraternities a lot of trust will be lost erickson said not only by the students but by the alumni as well ifc members said the current fraternities should be their top priority with the new residential report it is hard enough to compete with other fraternities for occupancy said brain sullivan 98 ifc administrative vice president what we need now is to focus on the houses we already have and concentrate on making them stronger sullivan said it was also announced at the meeting that the ifc was awarded the northeast interfraternity conference academic award for 1995-96 this past weekend at the lu grad opens gourmet cafe by dan evans news writer melanie bonacorsa 95 did not stray far from lehigh to find her first post-graduate job she has opened the gourmet cafe a coffee house located at 32 1 fourth st going to lehigh i never thought i'd do something like this bonacorsa said lehigh always prepares you for a career not for running a cafe in bethlehem the gourmet cafe is within walking distance of campus and is located in the same building as the touchstone theater the theater offers live perfor mances of original works tuesday through saturday nights the cafe has coffee live music homemade deserts and a friendly and energetic proprietor bonacorsa who majored in english and minored in theater while at lehigh is currently working for the touchstone theater in addition to running the cafe she works as an acting associ ate for the theater and is currently touring with the children's b&w photo by philissa williams the gourmet cafe has been in operation for three weeks under the management of melanie bonacorsa 95 politics class rebels against professor by shari budman assistant news editor two students led their govern ment class in rebellion against their professor by electing not to take their exam monday richard ricciardi 98 wrote a statement to his classmates in politics of the 1960s and his pro fessor edward morgan regard ing the hypocrisy of what was being taught and the exam that was to be taken that day along with gabe wright 96 he spoke with professors and class mates and decided to take a stand the material the students stud ied for the exam covered the civil rights and the student rights movements it was based on control of student education and interaction with administration wright said some of the articles we read focused on the educational system in colleges and how stu dents felt tests were a matter of regurgitation time limits and telling professors what they want to hear after studying for the test a lot of us came to the conclusion that it was contradictory to be taking an exam on such material he said ricciardi and wright said the material should not be ignored rather they wanted an option other than taking an exam half an hour before the exam was to be taken ricciardi and wright met with morgan who gave them time to propose an alternative to the exam when the class met a discus sion was prompted among the studerfts despite different per spectives the class chose with morgan's consent to write an essay on the effect revolt had on the individual student the stu dents agreed to meet outside of class to discuss issues that affect them professor morgan has done an excellent job teaching us ricciardi said he planted the seeds and presented us with a positive environment to do what we did there was a general sen timent in the classroom that we're in an environment where we're competing for grades and there's no socially redeeming values in education for two hours the students discussed issues regarding the educational system many stu dents felt as if they did not have a chance to practically appl their knowledge it was excellent am sobotkin l 7 said lt was the first time that i have seen students take control of education it was not about copping out so we didn't have to take an exam it was about learning ant coming away from lehigh with more than a piece of paper sobotkin said there needs to be more
