the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 27 tuesday february 6 1996 all the lehigh news first scholars take advance of free fifth year by jessica norris news writer the president's scholars program which began in january 1995 was designed to offer lehigh's top students the chance to earn a tuition-free second bachelors or masters degree the tuition-free program is good for a 12-month period the program was designed by lehigh president peter likins in hopes that it would help attract bright students to lehigh and reward their academic achievements students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher or who graduate with honors are eligible for the program lehigh is among a small number of schools that have programs such as this clark university in massachusetts also offers a year of free tuition to those who qualify there are only a few schools like lehigh that are trying to do this william johnson director of the office of national media rela tions said lehigh is one of many colleges in the coun try that is trying to reduce the rate of tuition increase next year's tuition increase is 850 the lowest dollar increase in the last 10 years and the lowest percentage increase 4.3 percent in the last 26 years like many other colleges and universities lehigh has also increased its financial aid with next year's tuition and room and board totaling 26,520 the president's scholars pro gram can be a great incentive lehigh is trying to reduce the cost of tuition and is succeeding slowly johnson said.the president's scholars program recent ly graduated three students and another 64 aiv currently enrolled or have been accepted tor june enrollment matthew deans 95 who was enrolled ii lehigh in a five-year double major undergrad uate program said he would not have consid ered lehigh for graduate school had it not been for the scholars program i think it's a good program and i think its zeta psi still strong despite probation by dan evans news writer bread and butter peanut but ter and jelly laurel and hardy fraternities and beer the pairs listed above are per fect complements you just can't have one without the other or can you for the past year zeta psi fra ternity has been alcohol-free and has had a live-in adviser as part of a social probation appointed to the house the probation was lifted last wednesday night since their probation began the brothers of zeta psi raised over 20,000 for their annual good scholar election for cancer research they have improved their house through renovations and upgrades and have managed to stay involved in the university through intramurals and other campus events r kirkwood colton zetes staff adviser said zetes has been working lutheran church this was just one of the many events lehigh has sponsored for black history undergrad research focus of lyceum by david butler news editor eighteenth-century french lit erature trends in breast feeding aids and the german educational system are among the many topics to be presented at the lehigh international lyceum on feb 9 from 1 p.m to 5:30 p.m on the third floor of the university center the undergraduate sympo sium to showcase international connections and leadership is organized like a regular academic symposium with concurrent one hour and 15 minute sessions co moderated by a faculty member and a student each session will consist of a presentation and discussion on a particular topic topics include industry and economics science and technology public relations literature and education and english as a second language a celebratory banquet and stu dent performances will follow for parents and invited guests anne thomas chair of the lyceum committee and director of the office of international educa tion said the program aims to develop future leaders in the global society to integrate international experience for all stu dents and to provide a forum to highlight stu dent achievements the lyceum gives students the opportuni ty to present which helps get them ready for international lead ership thomas said everyone will be doing work in the international field in the 2 1 st century one way or anoth er thomas said melissa d'amico 96 who will be presenting on 18th century french literature said the lyceum is a needed opportunity for under graduates to gain exposure graduate students have opportunities to present their work but undergraduates usually do not this is a can't-lose oppor tunity to make my presentation " — : ■everyone will be doing work in the international i field in the 21st century one way or other anne thomas director of lehigh lyceum committee * * and hear presentations d'amico said jenna petrosky 96 will be presenting a paper on the german educational system the product of her work during the e.w fairchild-martindale center stu dent-associate research program last june the lyceum is a great opportu nity to make students aware of global issues petrosky said 1 i chose the german educa tional system because it stood out as an interestiitsj aspect of german culture petrosky s paper is scheduled to be published in the journal perspective on business and economics by the e.w fairchild-martindale center later this year faculty sponsors of the lyceum include henri barkey associate profes sor of international rela tions therese maskulka associate dean of the college ol business and economics major ralph gabriel military science see tuition page 6 see zetes page 7 see lyceum page 7 n^l he^v mm
