the brown and white i x high university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 22 tuesday december 5 1995 all the lehigh news first phi sig breakfast raises funds for madd by abbasia kuan assistant news editor pancakes waffles toast bacon and eggs were among the foods stu dents were served at phi sigma kappa fraternity's late night break fast saturday the breakfast was held from mid night to 3 a.m to raise funds for mothers against drunk driving last year phi sig raised 845 this year the brothers raised 850 680 of it in advance advance tickets were sold for 3 in the university center and the ulrich student center from nov 28 to dec 1 . tickets were sold for 5 at the door phi sig gave group dis counts to fraternities and sororities todd eckhardt 98 a brother in phi sig directed this year's event eckhardt said the advance ticket sales were not very successful but were helpful in promoting the event this was the third year phi sig held the event before developing the fund raiser for madd the broth ers used to take children from bethlehem to the lehigh-lafayette football game jim helwig a representative from madd's lehigh and northampton chapter said he was pleased students are getting involved in the cause even though there is drinking at lehigh there are elements in frater nities that want to support our cause helwig said he said madd a volunteer or ganization was started primarily by parents to help survivors of drunk driving accidents alex rozenbom 98 a brother of phi sig said the breakfast is im portant for communication between the lehigh and betlilehem commu nities it's good for improving rela tionships among the greek system the school and the local commu nity rozenbom said helwig said the madd chapter will use the money to purchase marketing materials including bro chures and billboards kelly maloney ' 98 attended the late night breakfast i heard about this last year but i didn't go maloney said i usually don't eat breakfast but the food here was really good and i had a lot of fun eckhardt said the event was held in early december this year because there were no registered parties on bookstore holds re-opening celebration by michelle katz news writer the grand re-opening of the lehigh book store was held friday and saturday for students faculty and staff sue martrich assistant director of bookstore operations and sue terry assistant director of books coordinated the two-day celebration martrich said the decision to renovate the bookstore was made more than two years ago the renovation of the bookstore took 1 8 months and was completed at the beginning of the fall semester martrich said holding there-opening imme diately after the renovations were finished would have been difficult because the staff was still getting accustomed to the new layout there fore the official celebration was postponed until a more convenient time we decided to wait to have our grand re opening now because we thought that the holi days would be a good time right before finals and christmas seemed to be the most feasible martrich said radio station 95 1 wzz0 had live remote coverageat the bookstore from 12p.m to2p.m friday entertainment was provided by the l.u pep band on saturday dana s tow 98 is in chargeof the pep band a volunteer organization we usually play for basketball games but when we were asked to play at the re-opening we thought it would be fun stow said the group played lehigh fight songs and other tunes such as the lion sleeps tonight stow said she was glad to have the opportunity to gain baw photo by interviews the third class of lacocca scholars was chosen nov 20 lacocca scholar program devel oper letitia conkey said she was pleased so many quality students showedlnterest in the program it was a tough choice and i have the hours to prove it conkey said we were very happy with the num ber that applied and the caliber of the students this year there were approxi mately 30 applicants and 13 schol ars were chosen conkey said stu dents usually apply in their junior year and participate as lacocca schol ars for their last three semesters usuallyonly 12 students are cho sen but since one student vineet mehan 97 will only be involved for one year 13 students were ac cepted this year all the applications were good it was a very tough decision and we are very happy to have the 1 3 that we have conkey said every appli cant was excellent in their own way in addition to mehan this year's newly chosen scholars are toby bonagura 98 natalie bresler 97 lysa chizmadia 97 gerard darville 97 patrick fischer 97 carla forgham 97 andrea hirst 97 kathleen kerrigan 97 john lee 97 megann polaha 97 deborah zajac 96 and daniel zarrilli 97 the students were chosen based on scholastic achievement univer sity and community involvement interest in the lacocca institute achievements throughout their col lege careers and presentation style all applicants were required to design their own application get recommendations from a peer and from a lehigh professor and have an interview the interview lasted about 20 minutes and the students were asked different types of questions the in terview was conducted by five out of 10 members of the committee made up of conkey roger nagel executive director of the lacocca institute and professors from the different colleges involved in the lacocca institute the lacocca professors have a lot of input into how the program is run and with assisting the scholars conkey said the interview was tough be cause the students might be intimi dated
