the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 19 friday november 17 1995 all the lehigh news first student symposium unites cultures by dianne shelton news writer the first lehigh international ly ceum an undergraduate interna tional symposium on scholarship research andcreative achievements will take place in february the symposium will bring stu dents together to discuss adventures they had abroad as well as integrat ing the international students perspecitve of life in the united states and on lehigh's campus since ouroffice interacts a great deal with the study abroad office the idea was for both international students and students who have stud ied abroad to integrate their interna tional experiences said anne tho mas director of the office of inter national education the lyceum is the brainchild of thomas and is partially funded by a grant from the united states infor mation agency the lyceum is designed for all undergraduate students in all disci plines who have scholastic research or creative achievements with any sort of international implications she said we're looking for all types of students to participate not just students who have studied abroad or who are international students it's based on symposia like this at other schools giving undergradu ate the opportunity to present their research outside of class in an aca demic forum thomas said thomas said the idea for the pro gram came from the lehigh strate gic plan and the university's mis sion statement in the lehigh strategic plan one of the goals is to enrich the individual learning experience she said we feel that this is a great step toward accomplishing that goal thomas said that the lyceumwill take place on feb 9 from 1 p.m to 5:30 p.m on the third floor of the university center she plans to have three sessions with concurrent panels with par ents families faculty students and the public present to listen to the presentations and ask questions a banquet will follow for faculty par ticipants and their families i don't expect students to pre pare an hour-long presentation thomas said i anticipate students will prepare 10 to 15-minute pre sentations followed by a question and answer period and a discus sion for students who want to present a topic but are unsure of their pre sentation skills the office of inter national education will be sponsor ing a workshop in january on how to do a presentation and how to pre pare slides and overheads dara seybold ' 97 i s one of three students on the committee seybold spent nine months last year in senegal in west africa by josh van naarden news writer associate director of lacocca institute develops programs the lacocca institu te recently appointed linda erickson as its associate director erickson helps to create new work force de velopment programs for corporations we will utilize lehigh's strong expertise in the manufacturing field erickson said and tap our resources to help corporations develop new programs by collaborating with community col leges at the corporation sites roger nagel executive director of the lacocca institute announced erickson s appointment she was chosen because of her talents and reputation he said education and training will be the emphasis of the new programs northhampton community college is just one of the schools that will be participating in the work force development the programs erickson is creating are com munity based the end result should establish local workers with the skills the corporations need to operate effectively she said the institute will work with regional and national companies to develop the new more effective work force the range of the developing work force will be entry-level workers from high school to pro duction assistant engineers erickson said these new programs are being made possible by corporate funding the thrust of the changes are going to be happening in the manufacturing environment erickson said people currently employed are going to have to deal with these changes this new form of manufacturing will be more agile the lacocca institute will look at programs to prepare students the new work force will be a strong priority erickson said the initial focus will be on the factory floor worker and community college student she said the new program should rejuvenate corpo rations from the bottom up the names of the corporations that the insti tute will be dealing with cannot be disclosed at this time erickson said but the general sights for the new checkpoints cover south mountain by jennifer everett news writer _ the bethlehem hellertown lower saucon and freemansburg police departments lined the roads with sobriety checkpoints at last saturday's football game and will be working again at this weekend's game to deter drinking and driving officers at different checkpoints will be alert not only for drivers who may be under the influence but for underage drinkers as well the checkpoints are put into place prior to the game and at different spots after the game roving patrols will observe the back roads leading to the goodman stadium parking lots the roving patrols will enforce laws regarding alcohol abuse and drunk driving students have mixed feelings regarding the newly-implemented checkpoints it is an added safety feature to have the checkpoints and it doesn't hurt any bernard stabinski 97 said but at the same time we haven't really had any huge prob lems with duis in the past some students said the check points may have congested traffic kirk gibson ' 99 was at the football game last saturday and noticed that traffic seemed heavier than normal it was a bit frustrating because they didn't seem to be doing too much and it did slow down traffic some gibson said mark erickson dean of students said the checkpoints are important because they remind people of the potential dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol this is good news because hope fully it will make people think twice before they get in a car erickson said there isn't a person out there who wants to see an intoxicated driver on the road funding for the sobriety check points and roving patrols is coming from a pennsylvania department of transportation highway safety grant lehigh was not involved in the decision to implement the check points it was strictly the surround ing community police who initiated the checks according to the campus police 92 dui arrests were made on cam pus in the last four years five this year the arrests include students faculty staff and others caught on lehigh's campus the lehigh police have been working to prevent drunk driving on campus by adding an extra unmarked patrol car to pick up any suspicious vehicles on the weekends they arc not working in conjunction with the surrounding police departments the idea to have an extra car arose when a student and the
