the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 18 tuesday november 14 1995 all the lehigh news first families enjoy weekend activities by lisa spitz news writer upperclass students took a break from their usual activities over the weekend to spend time with their families and participate in several school-sponsored events upperclass parents weekend began satur day with an official welcome by president peter likins and former vice president dan quayle in packard laboratory auditorium quayle spoke to parents about community spirit at lehigh and the opportunity the school gives to students likins said parents can use the weekend to learn more about lehigh parents weekend is really booming likins said there is a stronger sense of part nership between lehigh and the parents danielle sack 98 said her mother donna enjoyed listening to the speakers i always enjoy hearing president likins speak because he is so warm donna said he makes me feel good about sending my daughter here saturday morning students and their parents were able to attend coffee hours for each of the three colleges professors were available to answer questions the weekend's cultural events included a performance from the jazz ensemble a movie and art exhibits a highlight of the weekend for many fami it's always a pleasure to have my parents come lies was saturday's football game against the down to visit me it gives my dad an opportunity to college of the holy cross remind me why i am here at lehigh unger said bradley unger 96 said he had a great time speech in packard labo ratory auditorium quayle and his wife marilyn chairs of the parents committee told parents their children are get ting a high-quality education at lehigh the quayles welcomed nearly 300 students and parents to upperclass parents weekend as part of a presentation sponsored by career services marilyn mackes director of career services followed with a presentation about the career library's resources hiring prac tices of many companies and pos sibilities in career paths quayle and likins first met several years ago when they both served on the national council on competitiveness quayle headed the council begun by president george bu sh to reduce regulations that threaten american jobs the quayles have chaired the baw photo by eleni andriolatos former vice president dan quayle addressed parents at a career services presentation saturday morning campus movie channel to air in january for residence hall students by kristen chanley news writer a campus movie channel is ex pected to hit the airwaves in january after two years of planning by uni versity groups mary kay baker assistant dean of student life said the channel will be available to all 1 3 residence halls students living off campus or in fraternities and sororities will not be able to receive the movie channel we are excited to provide this opportunity baker said we re ally feel that this is a good service to offer to residence hall students swank motion pictures will pro vide the movies while the funding for the channel will come from the residence hall association the cost for the channel is being based upon residence hall spaces baker said fraternities are not con sidered to be residence hall space george motter manager of en gineering services for the depart ment of distance education said there has been talk of providing the chan nel to fraternities and sororities on a pay-per-semester basis the cost for the movie station would be far less than the price of any larger movie channel such as hbo or showtime regardless of whether the mo vie channel is purchased all on-campus students will have three television stations blocked out and used as lehigh stations motter said the lehigh information chan nels can now be found on channels 2 and 21 since channel 21 is also nbc new york the lehigh station will soon be relocated to help choose the new movie channel and to move channel 21 to a more adequate station student sen ate ran a survey asking students which channels they would be will ing to do without said doug herman 98 student liaison to the senate once we get the stations set up the students will see how valuable these new channels really are herman said the two information channels will air 24 hours a day and the movie channel will air mainly dur ing weekday evenings and 24 hours on weekends the movies that will be shown on the movie channel will not com pete with the sac films shown in the kenner theater motter said they will be different
