the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 13 friday october 27 1995 * all the lehigh news first seniors help lehigh carry the load by dianne shelton news writer as the 1996 senior class gift cam paign gets under way members of the class of ' % are asked to continue lehigh's strong alumni support the campaign keep the train moving ... help carry the load officially began wednesday with a dinner for all campaign volunteers with president peter likins in the johnson room of the university center a party for the senior class was also held thursday night at the comfort suites with food karaoke drink specials and free admission stacy stainbrook 93 assistant director of the alumni fund said the senior class gift is a way to preserve the lehigh's history lehigh has a strong tradition of alumni giving she said it's im portant to perpetuate the idea that the senior class gift is one way to get people in the habit of giving back to lehigh the senior class gift campaign began in 1938 when the graduating seniors decided to pledge half a week s sal ary each year for 20 years the money was then invested and the class voted on how to spend the money at their 20th reunion the campaign was changed in 1 980 encouraging seniors to pledge 100 over five years just prior to their fifth reunion the members of the class were sent a survey explain ing lehigh s needs and asking them to vote on how they wanted their money spent they then presented lehigh with a check at their reunion this year the campaign offers something new for seniors campaign chairwoman jennifer koutnouyan 96 said one way the campaign has changed is that you can give your gift in honor of someone seniors can give in honor of their parents a professor or a friend to thank them while the campaign still asks seniors to pledge 100 over a five year period they can indicate which part of the university they would like their money to go to in the past all of the money was unrestricted koutnouyan said now you can restrict your gift to one of several categories the al umni fund each of the three colleges students clubs and activities the ath letic partnership residential life or greek life stainbrook said there were sev eral reasons for the change i think people wanted to feel that their money was making a dif ference that they had more owner ship of their money she said and if people were upset with the trust ees report they could use their money to show their support for greek life jack fulton 65 assistant vice president for development said fund raising has changed since the campaign's inception almost 60 years ago there has been an increasing number of alumni particularly younger alumni who have suggested that they would like to give to a by shari budman news writer campus remembers victims of violence students expressed support for victims of violence and assaultby creating t-shirts wednes day in the university center from 9 a.m to 4 p.m in honor of sexual assault week kathy calabrese director of the women s center orga nized support events including the clothesline project t-shirts and fabric paints were available for students to create shirts that represent any person who has been battered just about everyone knows someone either directly or indirectly that has been battered or assaulted and it's time that the lehigh commu nity becomes aware of the problem calabrese said we will hang the t-shirts in the u.c or ulrich so each time people see them they will recognize that violence affects everyone calabrese said she hoped to involve as many students on campus as possible so people will begin to feel safe from violence each sorority and fraternity was encouraged to take part in the project and make a t-shirt to represent their house capri trigo ' 98 president of alpha phi soror ity said she wants the clothesline project to encourage students to take notice of the ongoing issues concerning violence violence is a growing problem among col lege students and the only way it's going to change is if everyone works together she said calabrese stressed that violence affects ev eryone not just women violence committee at the kick-off dinner held wednesday in johnson dining room professor running for position on city council by casey bahrenburg news writer jack abel professor of molecu lar biology and aspiring politician is currently running as a republican candidate for the bethlehem city council election which takes place nov 7 abel believes his technological expertise will benefi t the bethlehem community when the republicans called me and asked me to run i decided to do it because bethlehem is a place that has several technological prob lems which happens to be an area where i amquite experienced abel said six candidates are running in the election - three democrats and tliree republicans we are not dealing with na tional problems where a specific party will make a difference but
