the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 12 tuesday october 24 1995 all the lehigh news first by tracy tumminello news writer musical groups perform for full house the sound of hundreds of voices could be heard over the rain friday night as lehigh university choral arts presented music and ecstasy a celebration in sound and space in packer memorial chapel the concert included performances by the university choir the choral union the commu nity music school chorus and the university chamber orchestra the concert was directed by steven sametz music professor and conducted by vincent metallo assistant music professor the university choir is mostly made up of lehigh students while the choral union includes students faculty and members of the community the com munity music school chorus consists of children and young adults from local schools the performance offered a selection of eight pieces one of the pieces was all ye who music love a madrigal written by baldassare donato in the 16th century and sung by the overtones a group of choir members another song soul of the world performed by the choral union was a motet written by henry purcell in the late 17th century the combined music groups sang schicksalslied a piece written by johannes brahms in the 19th century performers said they enjoyed singing with other musical groups choir member matt peck 96 said the univer sity choir the choral union and tlie children's choir all worked really well together the groups sang to a standing room only crowd as some people had to be turned away from the concert at the door students parents and local residents waited with their umbrellas in the rain in a line that extended far down university drive the line moved fast enough that it wasn't that bad georgette landberg 98 said it was defi fl w photo by jonny cottone steven sametz conducts the choir and choral union at the concert friday night former astronaut discusses his experiences with nasa by molly maginn news writer former astronaut and lehigh alumnus terry hart 68 spoke about the history of the u.s space program and his own experiences in space in packard auditorium saturday night hart showed a short movie filmed during his mission on the space shuttle challenger in 1 984 hart was mission specialist 1 on board the challenger and his responsibility was to use a mechanical arm to retrieve a broken satellite and bring it in for repairs in the film there were scenes of hart eating while floating through the craft most of the food was dehydrated hart said we just added hot or cold water depend ing on what it was my favorite was the shrimp the only difficult thing to eat was the scramble eggs - they don't stick to the spoon hart described the feelings and emotions he felt during the flight you just sit there with your nose pressed to the window watching everything it's awe in spiring hart said in a plane from here to chicago you see pittsburgh go by in space you see india and australia go by hart began his speech with a history of the nasa space program in 1 96 1 , president kennedy said we were going to land a man on the moon and bring him back safely by the end of the decade he said fl.t wpholo by trae patton former astronaut terry hart 68 freshmen and parents enjoy weekend together by kathy calogredes news writer the newest members of the le high family the class of 1 999 had a chance to spend time with their own families this weekend the univer sity sponsored a number of activi ties to help freshmen and their par ents have an enjoyable weekend susan beich director of devel opment relations and communica tion said parents need to see what goes on in their children's lives it's basically a fun weekend for parents to get a feel for what lehigh is really like beich said cultural events included a per formance from the university choir the choral union and the university chamber orchestra a theater perfor mance a lecture on apollo 13 and art exhibits a highlight of the weekend for many families despite the rain was saturday's football game against cornell university erin burdge 99 said i was really excited to see my family i looked forward to taking them to tlie football game and eating food in a real family environment the jewish student center spon sored a shabbat dinner on friday and the university held a dinner for freshmen and their parents saturday night at lacocca hall parents also had the opportunity to learn about life at lehigh on saturday the office of stu dent life staff members were avail able to answer parents questions convocations were held for each of the colleges and a parents resource fair was held at rauch fieldhouse a special annual religious ser vice was held sunday morning in packer chapel the service included a meditation given by university chaplain lloyd steffen and a per formance by the university choir many freshmen enjoyed taking time out of their busy schedules to visit with their families amy reddington 99 said i was excited to see my parents be cause it was also the weekend before my birthday and they could bring me the clothes and food that i've requested t — — ■— t «*— r — — — — — — — — — — — — -
