the first number presented by the group will be accompanied by the spiritual dry bones with the stage in absolute darkness a chorus of tumblers dressed in tights painted with phosphorescent skeletons will go through a tum bling routine after which they will turn their backs to the audi ence leaving the stage again black william carter featured acrobat will appear dressed as a devil in music of the nutcracker waltz lectees are automatically placed in a reserve status immediately upon discharge the period for this reserve status is ten years or until the selectee reaches the age of 45 however it is generally agreed that legislation is necessary to call these men back into service if this was not necessary there would be little purpose in the erc at all there are an estimated 12 million men in this category of uncallable reservists this group is catalogued in the records of the various branches of the military and the skills train ing and experience of these men are filed for future reference there is little expectation that they will be called to uniform since the big brass would rather leave world war ii veterans out of the picture unless they are real ly needed enlistments and reenlistments are being encouraged by the armed forces for all men who are willing to go back to military life but they would rather do their draft ing from the 2 million men bet tween the ages of 18 and 25 who have had no military training as yet there has been no call sent out for the reserves although the steps for doing so are being studied as a measure of prepared ness this would bring the armed ser vices up to their permitted strengths while at the same time it would train additional men details as to where the course is to be taught arrangements for board supplies needed etc will be announced later plenty of supervision summer courses required for c.e.s a summer surveying course re quired of civil engineering and mining engineering students op tional for other engineering stu dents will be offered this summer by the department of civil engin eering the course is divided into c.e 6 and c.e 6a all civil engineer ing students are asked to see pro fessor fuller the summer session he will be given a choice of continu ing in attendance until its comple tion june 28 and completing his work during the regular summer session or dropping the course and pre-registering for the full eight week summer session dr carothers speaks before controllers raps price controls sees possible return to normal conditions keeping prices down by law means abnormal consumption and exhaustion of all supplies de clared dr neil corothers dean of lehigh university's school of business administration before the controllers institute of america at atlantic city on april 5 dr carothers and martin r gainsbrugh chief economist of the national industrial conference warned members of the institute that economic collapse is near they cited examples of chaotic post-war depressions in history to corroborate their statements acridly criticizing government attempts at price control dr carothers stated there is no policy so inflationary in a boom period as keeping prices down by law it is inevitably followed by a complete collapse of price con trol return to normal possible depression is not inevitable he claimed but in one way or another the present swollen con dition will be removed a gradual return to normal is possible through reduction of government expenditures and taxes the al location of business profits to sur plus rather than dividends or plant expansion an end to busi ness's frantic scramble for new materials and abandonment of or ganized labor's campaign for a new round of wage increases he affirmed nothing could do more injury to the mass of american workers than another round of wage in creases in the minority group of high-wage workers in base indus tries dr carothers said it would insure a severe depression and condemn millions of workers to unemployment and destitution mr gainsbrugh pointed out that the possibility of a stepped-up re armament policy introduced a highly new element into the price equation he declared that those who hold that such a program would be a healthy stimulus to business as in 1940-41 do not take into account the difference in our present economic situation question of joining to be placed before students at election arcadia plans student vote on nsa issue discussion of the national stu dent association issue dominated the arcadia meeting held on march 24 at drown hall the nsa recently withdrew from the inter national union of students erasing suspicion of communist affiliations the center of the discussion ac cordingly shifted to the nsa's program of civil liberties fear was expressed by opponents that arcadia would perhaps run count er to administration policies if it endorsed the nsa after much heated debate presi dent charles boig reminded the members that joining the nsa was entirely a student function a mo tion was thereupon passed to sub mit the question of joining to the student body the voting by the students will take place simultan eously with the election of new arcadia officers which will be some time in the near future bulletin boards discussed a motion was also passed on the question of bulletin boards it pro vided that boards of the unen closed type be placed in conven ient locations inside buildings an alternative plan to place several glass-encased bulletin boards at locations outside on the campus was defeated it was feared that this would give the campus a sloppy billboard effect nothing in particular was de cided on the posting of placards for the coming arcadia election it was supposed that a definite period of about five days would be al lowed for the free-for-all posting of campaign signs in this case each candidate would be respon sible to see that his respective posters were removed after the as signed time limit finance proposals passed the recommendations of the student club finance committee were seconded with only slight alterations on the first arcadia decided that it should be given control of 30 of the freshman activities fund to be used for freshman activities by cyanide the original recommendation pro posed that cyanide should have direct control of these funds the second proposal was en dorsed with only minor discussion in it an increase of 30 to the student activities fund was re quested it was pointed out that in the past several years tuition has increased 37 without any corresponding increase in the activities fund five of the eight activities concerned had previous ly expressed need for additional funds they were brown and white the band the combined musical clubs mustard and cheese and arcadia allotments to the various activities are to be increased according to needs the third recommendation re quiring all activities needing funds to make detailed reports of the previous semester's spendings was immediately approved these proposals can only be put up to the administration as rec ommendations final action will be taken in the treasurer's office acknowledgement was extended to robert saydah for his fine work in securing universtiy aid in the publishing of the freshman hand book aracdia annually under takes to publish this handbook for incoming freshman and the his fifteen piece orchestra feature mickey wayne as female vocalist with the maestro himself doing the male vocal honors the band has re cently been playing at the steel pier in atlantic city as well as the strand hotel and other night clubs in the resort city led school band like so many of the popular band leaders today jack kenney started his musical career in high school with a small specializing in neither swing nor sweet music jack kenney ar rangements are styled for a variety of moods and tastes when do the reserves go that is the question that reserv ists all over the campus are asking themselves and each other ever since the president's address last wednesday there seems to be no definite answer to that one no one is quite sure high military officials beljieve that a presidential proclamation of a national emergency is necessary before either the erc or the orc can be called to active duty they feel that since no officers received discharges but instead were merely placed on inactive status they may be recalled as simply as the national guard however they are not sure of this at the present time a number of legal ex perts are on the job trying to ana lyze the situation a recent newspaper article has helped to cloud the whole picture for the discharged enlisted men who are not in the erc peculiar situation due to a fine prine clause in the selective service law all se three festival acts feature gymnastics brown and white phosphorescent paint orchestra music set as background effects sixteen tumblers and acrobats performing in pantomime using phosphorescent paint and other special effects will be one of the featured acts of the lehigh spring musical festival to be held on april 16 and 17 although the primary purpose of the gymnastic
