the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 11 friday october 20 1995 all the lehigh news first residential life holds town meeting by su kim assistant news editor lehigh held its second residential life town meeting tuesday to discuss integration on the hill panel members included president peter likins brad unger 96 senate member catherine spencer 97 senate representative on the environmental committee ; scott walter g reek affairs coordinator and pat chase director of facilities planning and renovation several issues were presented to the panel concerning integration on the hill spencer emphasized the need to examine the source of the housing problem we need to look at what people want spencer said if we are going to build something it needs to be for a school of 2,000 there were mixed feelings about the possible integration on the hill likins realized integration would not solve all of lehigh's residential problems however likins does not disagree with the idea of integration he spoke of the battle that women fought to get on the hill when the first sorority moved onto the hill there were huge protests likins recalled angry men fighting to keep women off the hill sorority women also received threats and were told they would not be able to handle living on the hill that it was not a safe place for them that was obviously not true women have become neighbors on the hill likins said the concern of special interest housing was also brought to the floor and questions arose as to whether special interest housing students would one day be up on the hill or if they would ever even want to change their living environment to the hill likins addressed the issue by saying that just as with sororities any other living group such as a special interest house would be asked first if a house were to open on the hill the possibility of opening a residence hall other than a fraternity or sorority is not a com pletely new idea likins said when delta tau delta fraternity was removed from the hill it became a coeducational residence hall known as hill house it was not a living group for certain members but a residential alternative that was the last non-greek residency to occupy the hill likins mentioned that lehigh has worked hard in order to preserve the greek system we have a staff that works at maintaining the system but we also have those who help recolo baw photo by mark rubins as part of alcohol awareness week this car sits on maginnes lawn to remind the campus and community of the possible effects of drunk driving students experience million man march by molly maginn news writer according to washington d.c park services 400,000 black men assembled on the mall in washing ton d.c monday for the million man march paschall simpson 97 and other lehigh students were among the celebrating masses it was the greatest experience of my life - nothing will ever come close to it simpson said there was a sea of black men sharing love and togetherness black men from all over the world were gi vi ng strang ers hugs and high-fives we pushed toward the front of the stage everyone was tired but when rosa parks began her speech everyone was rejuvenated simpson said but it wasn't just rosa parks that was inspiring it was malcolm x's wife it was hammer and jesse jackson and stevie won der and the little girl that read the poem it was the greatest collage of black minds all talking about the uplifting of the black man the million man march sparked a desire to celebrate black pride and heritage on lehigh's campus in an all-day celebration black students held meetings a memorial and a speak out during the evening students held adinner andaceremony at st john's church jennella young 96 was in volved in all of the day's events including the lehigh men's actual departure for washington we all went to the university center parking lot to see the men leave we told them to have fun but to be safe she said in the early morning a large group met at the flagpole in front of the u.c they walked to the martin luther king jr memorial on carlton avenue and had a small service president peter likins was there to show his support for the million man march and for the activities planned at lehigh at the speak out 30 students came to hear people read personal works poems and other readings sigma chi meat thief arrested and charged by jennifer everett news writer gordon ray johnson 42 of easton pa is being held at northampton county prison on $ 10,000 bail for stealing $ 15 1 56 of tenderloin meat from sigma chi fraternity on oct 10 johnson who was found to have an extensive criminal record is be ing charged with one count of crimi nal trespassing one count of theft by unlawful taking and one count of receiving stolen property he will appear in court nov 13 martin mcguire 97 a brother at psi upsilon fraternity saw johnson roaming around the hill he confronted johnson who told mcguire he was delivering some hot dogs and buns mcguire sus pected something was amiss he and a few others followed johnson as he walked toward sigma chi johnson entered the side door of the house while the sigma chi brothers were eating dinner and came out quickly carrying a box of frozen meat the psi u brothers called the police and johnson was found and arrested in the beta theta pi frater nity parking lot where his pickup truck was parked richard sullo 97 a brother at sigma chi said the incident was surprising because though we do leave the door unlocked during the day when there are a lot of people around the hill we lock it around 4 p.m so i'm not really sure how he got in detective sergeant robert bruneio is in charge of the criminal investigation for lehigh police bruneio said it is not a matter of tightening security we just need to continue what we are doing just being a little more aware than before he said bruneio gave credit to the stu dents who notified the police if it wasn't for the psi u brothers this investigation would still be in progress he said they were re ally a big help they got involved but not too involved stood back watched and called us and let us do our part please see town page 8 please see march page 8 ■***********-——-• the field hockey team won its second consecutive game defeating west chester university 2 1 see page 24 sports 20-24 football preview 22 lacrosse 23 golf 23 tennis 24 more than 500 students and community members attended the safety block party see page 4 news 1-8 world news briefs 2 fallfest 3 english club 6 lehigh addresses the issue of cultural diversity what does it mean and how can we contribute to it see page 9 lifestyle 9-16 culture corner 13 events guide 16 there have been 20 un derage drinkingcitations so far this semester source lehigh police
