the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 9 friday october 13 1995 all the lehigh news first senate meeting debates live-in advisers by gabriela schneider news writer the student senate ad-hoc committee for the residential living environment report conducted its first meeting on the board of trustees report tuesday in the ulrich student center students faculty and staff met and discussed the benefits and shortcomings of having a live in faculty adviser in all university residences panel members asked for suggestions and reac tions from students to take into consideration when the board of trustees finalizes its plans for a new residential life curriculum at lehigh john smeaton assistant vice president of student affairs said residential life is clearly connected to academic life we want to improve the residential environment but how we do that is dependent upon comments and suggestions made by students the prospect of having a live-in faculty ad viser in all residences including fraternities was not popular among the students who attended the meeting most feel it will not improve stu dent-faculty relations rather it will undermine students maturity most of the students at the meeting repre sented different greek organizations their big gest concern about having a mandatory live-in adviser was that it disputed the principle of on campus greek life carrie sendrow 96 a sister of alpha chi omega sorority said part of the appeal of greek life is that fraternity and sorority members are responsible for the maintenance of their resi dences therefore a live-in adviser would de mean their efforts having a live-in adviser is almost like a penalty sendrow said it would take away from the most educational experience one can have at lehigh it would take away from our maturity students at the meeting agreed that alumni advis ers are a positive aspect but said a compulsory live in adviser would alienate students because their t a student was robbed at the auto mated teller machine near the en trance to the lehigh bookstore in maginnes hall saturday at 1 : 1 9 a.m the student called campus po lice at 1 40a.m they arrived quickly and searched the area the two suspects took turns rob bing the student of 338 chief of campus police eugene dax said the first suspect held a knife to the student's throat and demanded the money he withdrew from the teller dax said he also was forced to with draw more money from the machine the second suspect had no weap ons but threatened to use violence if the student did not comply with the demands the student also was forced to give the second suspect 38 from his wallet both suspects were hispanic males around 19 or 20 years old they both wore blue jeans the first suspect was 5 feet 8 inches tall heavyset and wore a dark sweat shirt or jacket the second suspect was 5 feet 11 inches tall thinner and wore a red jacket lehigh president peter likins wrote in an e-mail notice to stu dents faculty and staff to use corn mon sense especially after dark it is best to use the machines during the day but if you must use them after dark please consider the atms located inside university buildings likins wrote dax also said students should take more caution and use the teller at reasonable hours people should use the machine at earlier hours but if they have to use it late they should go with a couple of people or call campus police to escort them dax said this incident may have increased safety awareness on campus but it has not changed everyone's routine brent lynch 97 has used the teller late at night in the past and will continue to do so it hasn't really affected me be cause you have to use caution wher ever you go he said lindsay hoffman 98 said she will take more caution at night i would always walk by myself late at night but now i'm either going to take tr acs or have some one walk me home she said chris faile 99 said he will now take some extra precautions i wouldn't make it a practice to go out there that late but if the teller was close to the dorm then i would withdraw money he said national coiming out day held to increase homosexual awareness by dianne shelton news writer as part of lehigh's gay les bian bisexual and ally awareness week a reading was held in the ulrich student center s great room wednesday during the lunch hour to celebrate national coming out day students faculty and staff who consider themselves to be gay les bian bisexual or an ally to the ho mosexual community were invited to express their feelings through poetry and personal experiences some of the week's other activi ties included a panel discussion movies and a lecture by sean sasser from mtv's the real world barbara dyer residence hall di rector for brodhead house and trembley park helped arrange tuesday's event when i got here last year i got involved in diversity issues that i am interested in such as this dyer said i thought it was a neat way for people to express their feelings on an issue for those of us who are allies at lehigh it's an opportunity to stand up and say that i support members of the gay lesbian and bisexual community and i'm not afraid to say that this is the first year lehigh has actively celebrated gay lesbian bisexual and ally awareness week in other years national coming out day usually fell over pacing break gay jeans day was usually the only activity designed to raise homo sexual awareness on campus several students and faculty members recounted their experi ences as homosexuals or as allies
