the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 6 tuesday october 3 1995 all the lehigh news first uc tower renovations and stabilization to be finished in two weeks by jennifer everett news writer after almost a year of construc tion and renovations to stop the uni versity center tower from sinking the 1 million project is scheduled to be completed in the next two weeks construction is being done by masonry preservation group inc there are more than 100 men work ing on the project most of whom haven't had a day off since may richard benner assistant direc tor of facilities planning and renova tion said the progress has been terrific because there have been no rain days to slow us down worker bob kelly agreed it is a huge job but the conditions have been great kelly said the renovations involve stabi lizing the tower from underground cleaning stone replacing shingles with slate on parts of the roof re placing rotted wood installing more effective lightning rods and fixing cracks and bulges the cracks and bulges resulted from the leaning and had to be re placed because they were letting moisture in and causing the stone to deteriorate this triggered concerns of loose stone falling from the tower one of the main tools in stabiliz ing the tower are star bolts they are thick bolts which extend through the tower and connect the two mascot for lehigh is continuing within the ranks of student senate and the athletic department h the two groups have i been discussing differ 1 ent options for four se i there a student i athlete council that is i also interested in work i ing with the to i adopt a new mascot for i senate renewed its i interest after the most re cent upperclassman senate elections the possi bilities of what the mascot might be are unknown joe sterrett director of athletics said the plan to adopt a mascot is still at a very preliminary stage the mascot lehigh may adopt will be a char acter who will run around at halftime to get the crowd to cheer for the team and will correlate with the traditional name for lehigh's athletic â– teams the engineers a spirit ad-hoc committee was formed by the senate to increase school spirit the ad-hoc committee will take some action toward devising a concrete plan student senate secretary kristin wood cock 97 said i think there is a definite need for a lehigh mascot to help promote school spirit other students also welcome the idea of a mascot although the mascot may not arrive before the end of the football season it is gener ally looked at with an open mind brian baker 99 said in division i foot ball the mascots pump up the crowd he specifically mentioned pennsylvania state university's nittany lion the mascot issue was addressed in 1992 but nothing surfaced in april of 1994 senate be came directly involved with the development of a mascot forming an ad-hoc committee for the sole purpose of coordinating the input of sena tors athletes and administrators to create the lehigh mascot however committee chairper son chris urban 95 repeatedly had difficulties with the scheduling of meetings with such di verse members senate's publicity committee also got into the debate in 1994 when they designed two different alternative mascot ideas which were then posed student aid may suffer due to budget cuts progressive student alliance mobilizes students to protest congressional cutbacks by marty mcguire news writer with all of the downsizing and cost cutting going on in congress since the 1995 election student aid will not go untouched the progressive student alli ance held an open discussion called the death of education to focus on this development and how stu dents can fight against potential hard ships caused by the cuts the government has increased cuts on financial aid to students angering thousands of people who want a better future but now face greater economic hardships according to the office of fi nancial aid 54.3 percent of the un dergraduate student body receives some kind of need-based aid as the u.s government is cutting back on financial aid for education many lehigh students are becoming aware of how these cuts will affect them richard ricciardi 97 a mem ber of the psa said being that we're coming up on election year and you hear a lot of promises from people renewing america and putting america back into the fore front these same people are in the same breath working towards cut ting out our education money there is an obvious contradiction here there is no way we are going to better america by shortchanging the students according to the u.s student association this year congress is proposing the largest cuts in student financial aid in history currently congress is poised to slash 11 billion in student loans and 4.5 billion in elementary sec ondary and higher education pro grams this includes 700 million in cuts to student financial aid and the major student financial aid pro grams at risk include pell grants state student incentive grants and perkins loans the u.s student association said upset with the low reaction from students in general to this issue ricciardi
