raked by bell noted teacher calls atlantic charter demagogue enterprise hits veto power of u.n by j l gill dr b i bell delivered a scath ing condemnation of the ameri can school and college system and branded it is the largest factor in tne failure of our democracy in a talk delivered at packer memor ial churen wednesday evening the education system nas three purposes according to dr bell it should teach its students to make a living it should civilize tnem and thirdly it should train leaders in discriminating self criticism the noted clergyman and educator maintained that in tne first object the colleges suc ceed fairly well in the second they do an indifferent job and in the last lieid tney fail very badly in deed century of common man as the rirst chapel speaker of the semester dr bell addressed a sizable group of students fac ulty and townspeople dr bell agreed with henry wal lace that this is the century of the common man the common man has received a new freedom which he never knew before however dr bell believes that he has not been exposed to an education which properly prepares him for this newly acquired lead ership anfl power the common man is not a man so much as a boy who has outgrown his brit ches according to dr bell he made a brief survey of the progress in the two fields of activ ity in man which are particularly human achievments as opposed to those of other animals — politics and fine arts in politics neither the gentle man nor the common man now govern but the power has been snatched by the demagogue dr bell described the atlantic char ter as a demagogue enterprise to cover up more sinister activities secondly he scored against the united nations cum veto which he believes is almost dead he reminded that the veto power was incorporated in the u.n at san francisco at our own insistence because we feared the loss of any national sovereignty he maintained that the common man could not have been fooled by these measures if he had been properly educated castigates hollywood in the field of fine arts it is no longer the well trained and discriminating gentleman who is in control but the unqualified common man consequtely our ears are insulted . . . with neon signs radio commercials and that prostitution of drama which pro ceeds from hollywood educationalists must help save the common man or else the cen tury of the common man will end in his enslavemen in prescribing remedies for the situation dr bell stated that the work of education must begin with the children of today he mention ed with praise the progressive measures instituted by the uni versity of chicago whereby par ticularly promising students are introduced to the collegiate life at the end of the first two years of high school in a civilization such as ours to be intelligent means to be un comfortable naturally most americans do not want to be un comfortable the intelligent man is in constant revolt against the wilfull desires of the common masses our society is destined to sink to a maze of wild animals if we do not have an intelligent few to lead us we should demand even if in sultingly that the educational system wake up to what its job is educational institutions must use selection to a great degree in picking those who have the mental capacity to learn intelligence to the theory that all men should education dr bell answered that have an equal chance for higher all men are born equal in only the face of the law they are all three respects they are equal in naked and they are all born to die very soon one cannot make intelligent and thinking individ uals of everyone dr bell main tained the g.i bill for veterans has placed a great many people in college who do not belong there photo by chisholm gene sowers president of tau beta pi addressed a sizable group of students fac ulty and townspeople dr bell agreed with henry wal lace that this is the century of the common man the common man has received a new freedom which he never knew before however dr bell believes that he has not been exposed to an education which properly prepares him for this newly acquired lead ership anfl power the common man is not a man so much as a boy who has outgrown his brit ches according to dr bell he made a brief survey of the progress in the two fields of activ ity in man which are particularly human achievments as opposed to those of other animals — politics and fine arts in politics neither the gentle man nor the common man now govern but the power has been snatched by the demagogue dr bell described the atlantic char ter as a demagogue enterprise to cover up more sinister activities secondly he scored against the united nations cum veto which he believes is almost dead he reminded that the veto power was incorporated in the u.n at san francisco at our own insistence because we feared the loss of any national sovereignty he maintained that the common man could not have been fooled by these measures if he had been properly educated castigates hollywood in the field of fine arts it is no longer the well trained and discriminating gentleman who is in control but the unqualified common man consequtely our ears are insulted . . . with neon signs radio commercials and that prostitution of drama which pro ceeds from hollywood educationalists must help save the common man or else the cen tury of the common man will end in his enslavemen in prescribing remedies for the situation dr bell stated that the work of education must begin with the children of today he mention ed with praise the progressive measures instituted by the uni versity of chicago whereby par ticularly promising students are introduced to the collegiate life at the end of the first two years of high school in a civilization such as ours to be intelligent means to be un comfortable naturally most americans do not want to be un comfortable the intelligent man is in constant revolt against the wilfull desires of the common masses our society is destined to sink to a maze of wild animals if we do not have an intelligent few to lead us we should demand even if in sultingly that the educational system wake up to what its job is educational institutions must use selection to a great degree in picking those who have the mental capacity to learn intelligence to the theory that all men should education dr bell answered that have an equal chance for higher all men are born equal in only the face of the law they are all three respects they are equal in naked and they are all born to die very soon one cannot make intelligent and thinking individ uals of everyone dr bell main tained the g.i bill for veterans has placed a great many people in college who do not belong there photo by chisholm gene sowers president of tau beta pi
