the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 3 friday september 15 1995 all the lehigh news first faculty member moves into brodhead by jennifer everett news writer faculty members are living in brodhead house this year to create better faculty-student ties the program was suggested by the committee on the undergraduate residence en vironment a memo was sent out by provost alan pense in march asking if any faculty members were interested in living in brodhead with the students mary kay baker assistant dean of student life said she hopes to help faculty and students have a better understanding of each other we are continuing to look for ways to build bridges between faculty and students and an ideal way to do that is to have them become a part of each other's daily lives she said another reason for this arrange ment is because of the success of taylor residential college which has a live-in faculty member b w photo by chris fa he bahrenburg news writer two weeks before the fall se mester began the 23 brothers of pi lambda phi fraternity were left homeless due to financial problems their troubles began last spring after pledging when their occupancy levels were still too low to cover the university's room and board rates jolly janson greek affairs coor dinator said the brothers removed themselves from the hill by choice it was a situation where finan cially they were not able to handle the room and board rates so they voluntar ily chose to do this she said janson also said that members of the house including its current trea surer brian donahue 97 went to the university and unsuccessfully sought financial assistance as a university policy we can't make any exceptions janson said all of the houses on the hill have to pay the same room and board rates michael barr associate director of fraternities and sororities for resi dential services was contacted by donahue over the summer they discussed the fact that pi lam was 1,600 in debt the idea of moving off campus was discussed and the decision was left in the hands of the house leaders the group saw that they were facing a huge debt and it was up to them to make the decision barr said beiieve me it was not fun for them when they came to the realiza tion that they couldn't afford it scott melcher 96 president of pi lam was not happy with the way the university handled the situation the university could definitely have been more interested and sup portive as opposed to being extremely slow and unresponsive he said bret coupland 97 a brother of pi lam agreed with melcher about the university's lack of support we were told that we needed either x amount of people or a crazy amount of money which just wasn't going to happen the university was not very helpful at all especially considering the fact that we were only given two weeks notice to find an alternative place to live coupland said matthew lepis 97 never got a chance to live in the house he now lives off campus with the rest of the brothers who have houses on east fifth street and montclair and hill side avenues the brothers of pi lam are still recognized both by the university as one of its 28 fraternities and by themselves as a brotherhood decisions have not yet been made about the possible chance of pi lam being put back up on the hill how ever they plan to take part in rush this year and they hope it will be a success we haven t really thought about what we are going to do for rush at this point considering the fact that we don't have the house lcpis said it will be tough but we can still do it without a house because it's only the people that really matter activist bikes across state to raise aids awareness by toby bonagura news writer michael ridgeway has already bicycled once around the united states his second tour brought him to lehigh where he made his message known the acronym aids could just as well stand for am i doing something i feel that society is more re active than pro-active and we need to change that ridgeway 35 said tuesday when he spoke to two human sexuality classes by reacting in a non-compassionate way we have delayed the stem ming of the spread of aids ridgeway s bicycle is his ve hicle for spreading this message traveling solo and self-contained he cycles from city to city as the spokesman for dream ride for aids an organization that he founded in 1993 logistically it was the hard est thing to put together as an amateur volunteer group who was j ust following our hearts we some how managed ridgeway said lehigh was the third stop on his dream ride for aids tour which will last through late octo ber he plans to make 25 stops in 50 days speaking at red cross chapters universities churches and schools across
