the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 2 tuesday september 12 1995 all the lehigh news first coed hall aims to foster respect by abbasia khan assistant news editor the third floor of mcclintic-marshall house is the first freshman hall to be made coeducational other colleges were of fering coed dorms i think it's a great opportunity for men and women to live with each other and i think they'll respect each other more said mary kay baker assis tant dean of students we were finding that prospectives were asking questions about whether or not coed dorms were offered as an option she said many residents feel coed life makes interaction between males and females a lot easier audrey tamtamjarik 99 said it's easier to meet guys because they live right across from us so we don't have to go to another wing to meet them both residents and gryphons agree that coed life is a good idea and offers many benefits graham couature 99 said living on a coed hall seems more like a commu nity i think people are more considerate and polite natalie alexander 97 a gryphon on the a-wing also feels people are more thoughtful of each other i think they have more respect for each other and think of each other as equals she said baker said it was time to present coed dorm life be cause of its popularity at other universities and the learning experience it pro vides to freshman students the office of residence life and the gryphons be lieve a benefit of living on a coed hall could be a signifi cant amount of property damage control adam cina 97 also a gryphon on the a-wing said i think that there aren t going to be as many dam ages because a lot less dam ages are incurred by fe males b&w on the world wide web beginning with the sept 8 1995 issue the brown and white is avail able via the internet on the world wide web the paper's home page was created over the summer and most of the issues from spring 1995 are now avail able future issues will eventually include more graphics and some cross referencing to related sto ries all issues will be pub lished on the internet at noon on the day the printed papers are distributed the new computerized format called the brown and white online has been well received so far bob fisher 79 editor of the lehigh alumni bulletin has recently included the publi cation on the alumni home page many alumni from the class of 1 965 to the class of 1 99 1 , have seen the page greg titus 91 wrote great job this will be a great way to keep up with events at lehigh area residents high school seniors looking at colleges and people from as faraway as england and new zealand have also looked at the page and left messages the page is available using world wide web browsers such as netscape mosaic or lynx the mented the new wired computer program in an effort to upgrade and revamp present campus computer capabilities wired the world wide i information resources in ev i ery dorm program provides i students direct high-speed ac i cess to the global information i resources available via the i internet users can now browse i through world wide web i with mosaic or netscape as i well as read electronic mail i and have direct access to i computer archives by using wired users save room on their hard drives and access data almost instantaneously to become wired students install a computer card in their per sonal computers this links the com puter up to high-speed laser printers and one of six access computers owned by the university one of the wired organizers is timothy foley associate director of the computer center foley said this program is a critical advance ment for students computer sys tems as well as a significant invest ment by the university we've installed 29 high-speed laser printers in every residence hall and each of the sororities in upper 6 6 i upgraded my computer myself and spent a lot of money in the process it's fantastic that lehigh is doing it for them lay knudsen 96 5 campus computer program allows students to hook up to laser printers cents not to mention the six servers where students connect to foley said erik hume 97 is one of 17 stu dent consultants on foley's staff he thinks lehigh did an outstanding job with wired and said it will be a tremendous cost benefit for stu dents the use of a laser printer is some thing most people can t afford hume said through wired lehigh faces the cost and gives every person living in a residence hall access to one hume has installed almost 40 com puters in the past two weeks and reports that the other consultants have installed more than 700 computers since school began nathan thompson 96 works in the lehigh computer store and is amazed by the success of the wired program thompson said we've sold more computers this week and even more of the cards that acts as the connection people are really starting to take advantage of this as well as new software and the latest options r he said the connection card costs 50 for students with ibm computers there is also a 40 user charge that automatically appears on the bursar s bill every semester this charge is partial compensa tion for some of the thousands of dollars initially invested in the new program jay knudsen 96 is optimistic about the implementation of wired i upgraded my computer by myself and spent a lot of money in the process it's fantastic that lehigh is doing it for them knudsen said amanda walker 96 said le high is taking a step in the right direction by providing students with access to the latest technology the world wide web is dra matically changing the world and the way people communicate and transfer data when lehigh stu dents get out into the real world they will have a competitive ad vantage walker said kimberly evers 96 applauded the efforts of the university but sees most of the advantages going to the students living on campus i'm aseniorlivingoff campus i own a computer and my own printer evers said it's great that lehigh is doing this but i doubt if a lot of seniors and students who live off campus will benefit from it i'm sure my tuition was af fected by this huge investment and i wish i could take
