brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 38 tuesday april 4 1995 all the lehigh news first arts and sciences searches for dean by carolyn delph news writer the search for a new dean of the college of arts and sciences is ex pected to be complete by the end of the month according to norman melchert the search committee chair man and chairman of the philosophy department hopefully by the end of april we will have our three names to recommend to the provost al pense who will then make an offer he said the search is being conducted to replace former dean james gunton who headed the college of arts and sciences for six years until last july melchert said the search process for a dean of the arts and sciences college began in october w beall fowler physics professor is acting as the interim dean until a replace ment is found melchert did not com ment on whether or not fowler is being considered for the position melchert said lehigh has em ployed a professional search firm in philadelphia to help in the search we are looking for someone to be a strong leader in the college represent the college well to the ex ternal world have a strong under standing of the liberal arts and sub stantial experience in academic ad ministration melchert said don davis chairman of math ematics is one of 1 1 arts and sci ences faculty members who serves on the search committee this is the first time i've served on a search committee for a major administrative post i'veenjoyed do ing it although its been a lot of work davis said davis said they started receiving applications in december davis also said they are about midway in choos ing applicants of the approximately 190 ap plications we received every one of those was read by four of us davis said the committee then assigned each applicant a grade from a through c a being the highest those who received low grades were ruled out narrowing the pool down to about 30 applicants melchert said they could not name candidates or possible can didates for the time being without being inappropriate davis said the entire committee read those 30 applications which they then cut down to 14 and finally down to 10 the most challenging part is deciding which of these excellent candidates would make the best dean for the arts and sciences college davis said we have disagreements amongst ourselves over who would be the best candidate and we argue over the various candidates some people on the committee are looking for a strong public rela tions person whereas others are look ing for a dean who works with cur riculum and inspires professors to be better teachers for this reason it is unlikely there will be a unanimous vote davis said the final 10 applicants are then invited to campus for a two-hour interview a tour of the campus and a opportunity to have dinner with two or three of the committee mem bers davis said only half of those ap plicants are invited back for a second visit this one lasting one and a half days in the second round of interviews the applicants meet with the chair persons of all the departments in the arts and sciences college president peter likins members of the forum and patti ota vice provost and asso ciate to the president russell selby 96 a government contest finds a few good men by jen newman news writer on wednesday evening students filed into lower grace to help alpha omicron pi in their search for a few good men the annual mr lehigh competi tion raised about $ 1 500 for aopi's philanthropy the arthritis research foundation the event drew 18 competitors from various fraternities and organi zations around campus the men began the evening with a formal wear segment followed by a talent competition talents ranged from karaoke on roller blades to eating a raw egg with a goldfish chaser the winner of the competition was jim kelly 98 a phi gamma delta pledge kelly did his crazy arm trick for the audience a black belt in karate he displayed his flex ibility by contorting and twisting his body in various positions kelly said the contest proved more difficult than he had anticipated the questions were stiff and so was the competition kelly said i had a great time though once the talent competition was over the judges were introduced while the five finalists were chosen after the finalists were an nounced they had two more chances to prove they had what it took to be mr lehigh the finalists were kelly pete caperonis jon wowak ryan pervis and marc fonzetti all class of 98 caperonis a pledge from pi kappa alpha was the runner-up his tal ents included a sultry rendition blue sky by the allman brothers sing kappa alpha psi hosts step show by su kim news writer kappa alpha psi fraternity hosted its seventh annual step show to ben efit lehigh s student that are ready program at broughal middle school on saturday in order to make the event more interesting kappa alpha psi held a competition between fraternities and sororities in the pennsylvania and new york areas three fraternities and three sororities competed in the show the step show which varies from cane dancing to synchronized steps has been the main fund-raiser of the kappa alpha psi fraternity for most of its existence on campus though they had no firm figures members of kappa alpha psi esti mated they had sold between 500 and 600 tickets at 8 each with all pro ceeds going to star the national fraternity sponsored saturday's competition which al lowed the lehigh chapter to raise money for the star program sigma gamma rho sorority won first place in the women's division while kappa alpha psi won first place in the men's division the show started off with the delta gamma chapter of alpha kappa al pha sorority from penn state univer sity stepping to a hard beat of dance music delta sigma theta from the new york area was next in the program making their entrance by dancing in black spandex and red football jer seys with their house letters printed across the front the representatives of sigma gamma rho were a mixture of un dergraduates and graduate students from beruke college hunter col lege and cornell university jackie donovan a graduate stu dent at beruke college said her so rority was excited to participate in the event we came all the way from new york and sigma gamma rho is so happy to be here donovan said in between the women's and men's competition ayana and avy\nv.cv\\pps,'9%,pertormcdasong after the song the men's competi tion commenced earl moffet 94 a phi beta sigma brother from the university of dela ware enjoyed representing his fra ternity i wish all the organizations could have been represented but i'm glad that phi beta could be here we had a lot of fun performing moffet said the final men's act in the show was given by kappa alpha psi the kappa men came out dressed in black pants white shirts and red suspenders each brother carrying a red and white cane the seven men of kappa demonstrated their skill and expertise in step dancing according to paul sibblies of kappa alpha psi 94 the fraternity has performed everywhere includ ing such venues as national events like the
