the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 21 friday december 2 1994 all the lehigh news first ifc debates hill parking transportation problems by lcmdsey ellison assistant news editor chris christian director of transportation ser vices spoke at the interfraternity council meeting tuesday and suggested two possible parking and trans portation changes to occur sometime next semester the first issue involved transportation services plans to make hill drive a one-way downward street in order to create additional parking for phi gamma delta fraternity hill drive begins at the bottom of fiji and ends at the delta tau delta fraternity christian hopes that if transportation is directed only downhill there will be more room for cars to park on one side allowing less traffic congestion however some ifc members think that if the one way street is implemented it will cause more traffic along dead man's curve on sayre drive but fiji's parking problem is still a concern to ifc and ifc president ben malekzadeh 97 fiji is in dire need of additional parking and ifc does not want to ignore their predicament malekzadeh said as far as i'm concerned fiji needs their parking even though we are concerned with the downhill prob lem malekzadeh said the only solution suggested was that hill drive could be one-way going upward this would allow cars on the hill to take hill drive instead of sayre drive providing a safer flow of traffic but greg boye 97 a brother at fiji disagrees and feels there should be a one-way street the one-way street would definitely benefit our house boye said we are one of the houses on the hill that has the biggest parking problem we have to share parking with sigma chi and it only allows 10 parking spaces for our house but no matter what people will drive on sayre drive i doubt it would increase traffic the other idea christian suggested was that ifc pay for another tracs van to travel only on the hill during ba w photo by kristie vasiiaw keith snyder 95 scott melcher 96 mike bor 96 and john breyer 96 at the ifc meeting students assaulted at sigma chi by abbasia khan news writer three lehigh students were ha rassed and assaulted in front of sigma chi fraternity the morning of nov 13 by several as-yet unidentified indi viduals the students members of beta theta pi fraternity were assaulted after separately leaving a party at sigma chi at 2:30 a.m the argument began over a misun derstanding about a cigarette lighter john janick 96 said the attack ers repeatedly harassed him to bor row a lighter after he told them he was notcarry ing one as mark horst 97 and kyle severson ' 96 left sigma chi they both attempted to stop the argument but were also assaulted mark saw them harassing me so he tried to help then kyle came to help mark not knowing there were about six guys janick said he said it is unfortunate that the fight started because of a lighter horst suffered a bloody nose and lip and a cut on the left eye as a result of the fight i had my forehead punched try ing to help john then kyle was badly beaten up trying to help me hoist said severson was taken to the hospi tal suffering from a broken nose.and he received two stitches on his lower lip i went to a specialist last mon day and he said that there was nerve damage where my teeth are and that it would take time to heal severson said scott walter greek affairs coor dinator said the police are investi gating the situation budget investigation raises questions about student senate funding the lehigh gospel choir has re quested funds from the student sen ate for uniforms for the last three years according to shakira johnson 97 president of the choir each year the requests have been denied by senate we also asked for the use of a drum set or piano because our music requires it johnson said but for the last two years we have been de nied so when it comes time to per form we can't do it because we don't have the money at the same time the student sen ate grants another organization over 4,000 for an overnight trip to wash chase of a laptop computer copy machine and new office furnishings what organization was granted such generosity by senate the stu dent senate themselves • • • the student senate is responsible for the allocation of $ 1 8 1 865 to the university's 108 student-run organi zations and clubs senate says its system is fair to all clubs other stu dents say the system is marked by inconsistency favoritism and con flict of interest a three-month brown and white investigation - including a review of the student senate budget analysis of the university budget and inter views with administrators senate of ficers and students - found • five organizations receive 67 per cent ($ 1 22,285 of senate allocations the five organizations are the crew club choral arts instrumental mu sic wlvr-fm and student senate - which allows itself to compete with other clubs for money • 103 remaining clubs divide just 59,580 • 1994-95 student senate allocated itself a total of 23,885 a portion of these funds were allocated for the purchase of a laptop computer copy machine and new furnishings for senate's upper grace hall office • senate spent 4,000 on an oct 15 - 16 senate retreat to washington d.c • other senate expenditures include 3,500 for a delegation to attend a summer conference and 600 for the senators food budget the contrast between the funding rreated some animosity with stu organization members it's ridiculous that they give that much money to themselves ski team president jennifer newman 95 said they decide who gets money and who doesn't how can they possibly be fair in judging them selves • • • the current budget allocation sys tem requires a club to submit a bud get packet to the senate's 12-member allocations committee an organiza tion must detail all of us anticipated expenditures for the year the allo cationscommittee then evaluates how much of the requested funding an organization deserves based on sev eral criteria senate president and former al loca tionscommitteechairman kevin chick 95 cited previous club spending — -
