until reason is victor by james l gui emphasizing the crises confront ing western civilization today in the spread of scientific technology without scientific spirit and the failure of social thinking to keep step with scientific advance dr edwin e aubrey presented a stim ulating address to a large group from the student body faculty and public in 466 packard laboratory friday evening one of the highlights of the three day program of faculty con sultations on religion in higher education held here thursday fri day saturday the open forum meeting proved to be very suc cessful in arousing discussion on the part of the students and fac ulty dr aubrey pointed out in his talk that all the institutions which comprise our society simultaneous ly are undergoing change result ing in the present crises we have defeated the enemies of democracy by force not by reason stated dr aubrey the forces of fascism are still very must present and active in the united states and the rest of the world we have proved our super iority in force but have not de feated the ideals of fascism by reason until this is accomplished the world will continue in the present state of unrest according to dr aubrey fascism among threats dr aubrey listed four main is sues of crises which face us to day the first is the failure of the scientific spirit to advance with technology the second threat is that with the rapid spread of com munism the danger arises that we shall thing stupidly about it fas cism in its present form as op posed to its highest concept as held by croce is the third problem mentioned by the noted theologian the fourth crises in our society is the threat to reason wherein self evident truth is limited to a par ticular group or class such as the nazis education's task is to develop the individual's capacity to make his contribution to society by such means as individuality without in dividualism initiative without in tolerance and spontaniety bal anced by discipline cites christian principles according to dr aubrey there are four christian resources for dealing with the crises first the church has had plenty of exper ience with many crises in the past in dark times many have predict ed the collapse of the church but the church always seems to live long enough to pronounce the fu neral orations of those who would bury it the power of the small consecrated minority of people with a burning conviction are its second aid third are the two principles in christian ethics those of love which is at the root of the scheme of things and diver sity in unity aubrey condemned uniformity as the death knell of progress fourth christian recog nition of the necessity for sacrifice president whitaker present a lively question period fol lowed the talk in which the guest consultant answered questions of varied nature although consultations between dr aubrey and the faculty were carried on throughout the three day period friday evening's open discussion highlights of the three day program of faculty con sultations on religion in higher education held here thursday fri day saturday the open forum meeting proved to be very suc cessful in arousing discussion on the part of the students and fac ulty dr aubrey pointed out in his talk that all the institutions which comprise our society simultaneous ly are undergoing change result ing in the present crises we have defeated the enemies of democracy by force not by reason stated dr aubrey the forces of fascism are still very must present and active in the united states and the rest of the world we have proved our super iority in force but have not de feated the ideals of fascism by reason until this is accomplished the world will continue in the present state of unrest according to dr aubrey fascism among threats dr aubrey listed four main is sues of crises which face us to day the first is the failure of the scientific spirit to advance with technology the second threat is that with the rapid spread of com munism the danger arises that we shall thing stupidly about it fas cism in its present form as op posed to its highest concept as held by croce is the third problem mentioned by the noted theologian the fourth crises in our society is the threat to reason wherein self evident truth is limited to a par ticular group or class such as the nazis education's task is to develop the individual's capacity to make his contribution to society by such means as individuality without in dividualism initiative without in tolerance and spontaniety bal anced by discipline cites christian principles according to dr aubrey there are four christian resources for dealing with the crises first the church has had plenty of exper ience with many crises in the past in dark times many have predict ed the collapse of the church but the church always seems to live long enough to pronounce the fu neral orations of those who would bury it the power of the small consecrated minority of people with a burning conviction are its second aid third are the two principles in christian ethics those of love which is at the root of the scheme of things and diver sity in unity aubrey condemned uniformity as the death knell of progress fourth christian recog nition of the necessity for sacrifice president whitaker present a lively question period fol lowed the talk in which
