the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 10 tuesday october 18 1994 all the lehigh news first forum debates likins four-four plan by michelle de mooy assistant news editor the student-faculty forum met on oct 6 to discuss the possible implementation of the four-four plan a proposed piece of the contro versial lehigh plan the plan would require students to take four courses each worth four credits academically traditionally lehigh students have taken five classes worth three credits each the typical student would in theory have fewer more in depth courses the debate in the forum began with a critical examination of pros and cons of the four-four system lehigh president peter likins supports the plan which would accommodate lehigh s early retirement program as lehigh will lose some of its professors as well as forcing stu dents into more concentrated study some faculty saw a need for such a program to give some colleges more chances to try labs and group work the college of arts and sciences which has been asked by the forum to vote on whether or not it will agree to implement the new plan by june of 1995 discussed the general reac tions they received from faculty and students robin dillon associate professor of phi losophy and head of the women's studies program said that the college is undecided on whether or not the plan is a good idea we still have a lot of questions dillon said for example how will this plan affect double majors also it might restrict sam pling among students who aren't sure what they want to major in provost alan pense supported likins state ments on the subject there are a lot of possibilities for us to look at pense said i think the plan is a good idea but we are willing to work with each college to find a compromise both students and faculty debated each aspect of the idea and its consequences from teacher's assistants to the possibility of teach ers keeping the same three-credit material while giving four credits for the work on nov 7 the arts and sciences college will vote on whether or not they will adopt the four-four plan if the different colleges cannot decide whether or not to adopt the plan it may be up to the individual departments to decide several professors representing the highly structured programs of engineering and busi ness objected to the limited nature of the plan professors commented that for students who are in these two colleges having five classes allows the student to have one elective and broaden their education both sides agreed the plan must be re searched to get a clear idea of its implications haw photo marc calabrese teams compete for a 1,000 grand prize in the first interfraternity council basketball classic ifc hosts basketball game to help boys and girls club by mark filipps news writer the first interfratemity council five-on-five basketball classic a charity basketball tournament was held saturday at the boys and girls club of bethlehem ben malekzadeh 95 organized the tournament with steve dolak executive director of the boys and girls club there was a 50 en trance fee for the 28 teams striving for a 1,000 first prize malekzadeh said he got the idea for the tournament when he was the greek week chairman for the ifc last year he noticed that most of the money raised for charity went to large na tional philanthropies but the south side was overlooked the kids could really use the help malekzadeh said the boys and girls club which helps children living in poor neigh borhoods was chosen as a way to help bethlehem's youth the boys and girls club is a great organization that provides ac tivities and programming to help keep kids off the street malekzadeh said the boys and girls club is a great organization that provides activities to help keep kids off the street ben malekzadeh 95 over 5,000 was raised for the club in donations and entry fees for the event dolak said the money will go toward the drug prevention pro gram the program will meet with kids once a week to educate them about drugs and resisting the peer pressure to start taking drugs malekzadeh had planned on mak ing the event bigger and using some of lehigh's basketball courts but due to university events the courts were not available mark paules unit director of the boys and girls club helped run the tournament i think t went well it's a good event he said paules said the boys and girls club hopes to get more involved in planning next year s tournament with malekzadeh james versocki 95 helped to get prize donations and to organize • the event in addition mitch toren 95 ifc president told malekzadeh he could use the ifc as a sponsor for the event one-woman show analyzes women's issues in religion by yen tang news writer kietryn zychal 84 performed a one-woman show about oppression of women in organized religion merely the ravings of a maniac at packer memorial church oct 1 3 the performance included imper sonations of historical people and funny skits and involved several au dience members the show opened with zychal acting as a 12-year-old girl named penny royal who described herself as a lapsed fundamentalist questioning symbols of organized religion she called the cross an in strument of torture because in the judeo-christian religion jesus christ died on a cross part of the piece analyzed the biblical story of adam and eve which zychal called the first dysfunctional family and the myths that surround the story she said myths have the power to shape lives what does this myth say about our culture zychal described religion as a method of oppressing women through myth and distortion zychal said belief in a religion is the great est motivator the adam and eve story has been misused for many centuries to deprive women of equality zychal said according to zychal william shakespeare patterned his play the tempest from that biblical story the ending of the play was a happy one implying that people will live happily ever after however in the bible it was the woman's fault for the tragic ending in which a seductive eve tempted adam with the apple from the tree of inside news 1-8 world news
