the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 102 no 8 tuesday october 4 1994 all the lehigh news first vandalism makes student parking uncertain by jennifer newman news writer many students returned to lehigh this september to receive a welcoming they did not bargain for the brown and white's police reports record 14 cars have been van dalized and broken m to since the beginning of the semester tara mockler 96 walked out to the sorority lot to find the roof of her 1989 volkswagen cabriolet slashed over the driver's side of the car also her doors and glove compartment were open and her per sonal belongings were strewn all over the interior of the automobile fortunately nothing was stolen the police told her that m cases like this criminals are usually looking for money if they took something i'd be a little hap pier knowing that my car didn't get ruined for nothing mockler said who now has to bring her car home to new jersey to get an insurance appraisal on the damages dana picardi 95 had her chrysler lebaron convertible broken into two times in three days the first night of school ■she was on h.i packard drive when hoi i roof was slashed and her i car again i nothing was safety reasons i parked in the lower i centennial parking lot i it was again broken i through the same slash in the roof two nights later after this second incident picardi was reluctant to leave her car anywhere i was scared to leave it off campus so i parked it in rauch under the biggest light picardi said i had to move it at 7:30 in the morning the parking situation is bad enough as it is they should at ieast do something mx berry 96 picardi also explained that during the day she did not want to leave it m one place for any length of time at least 45 minutes per day was spent moving my car said picardi my friends laughed at me alix berry 96 was parked on e fifth street one wednesday night during the second week of school when the entire left side of her volkswagen jetta was scratched apparently with keys her wind shield wipers were bent at a 90 degree angle and parts were broken off i feel like on campus they should do some thing about it berry said the parking situa tion is bad enough as it is they should at least do something john smeaton assistant vice president of students affairs said parking on and off cam pus would not be such a problem if more students would walk to class instead of driving if safety is a concern there is also the escort service or transportation services there's this spill over because the neigh borhood was never made to accommodate these cars smeaton said if students walktogether it increases their safety immensely lieutenant edward shupp of the lehigh university police does not believe the acts were targeted at one person the events are under investigation shupp said we're checking some leads that we do have but we feel that they're random the administration believes there is only so much they can do to protect individuals cars you can patrol a parking area but then your focus is on things smeaton said our fiji and gamma phi debate definition of sexual harassment by peter sorkin news writer phi gamma delta fraternity and gamma phi beta sorority hosted a forum on sexual harassment on wednesday featuring lan birky di rector of counseling services at le high as guest speaker the discussion was interactive with both houses asking and answer ing questions the meeting came about because a similar forum between the two houses took place a few years ago because of the positive reaction the presidents from both houses de cided to get together with the idea of creating a similar program we felt this exchange between fraternity men and sorority women would be a great forum to talk about sexual harassment saidgamma phi president justine kaiser 95 i called justine last year because we had done a sexually transmitted disease program two years ago flj i president john babson 95 said and we tried to set something like this up for last semester but it didn't work out so we decided to do it for this semester both house presidents felt an in formal setting would be more condu cive for the two houses to interact we thought it is more fun for either side when there's more inter action instead of just being lectured to babson said the meeting which lasted over an hour was part of gamma phi's personal chapter enrichment pro gram pace is a national gamma phi program usually held once every three weeks on topics that could help the sorority sisters photo courtesy of sherry robertson fraternity sorority gryphon society members joined the wlev mascot at the heart walk greeks and gryphons join in raising funds at six-mile heart walk by randi fleishman news writer students from fraternities sorori ties and the gryphon society joined together on sunday m a six-mile walk through allentown cedar park for the american heart association this is the first year lehigh has been involved m the heart association's walk through the work of sherry robertson 95 lehigh s involvement was a success the walk was held sunday afternoon and con sisted of a six-mile path throughout allentown cedar park robertson vice president of the gryphon society began thinking lehigh should participate m the heart walk when she worked for the ameri can heart association this summer robertson managed to gel par ticipants from nine fraternities six sororities the gryphon society and some faculty robertson said i am really impressed with the fraternities and sororities because they were very helpful they deserve a lot of recog nition lehigh raised 1,600 for the american heart association they also won a prize for participating which has not been determined yet the prize will be donated to center city ministries a homeless shelter and soup kitchen m bethlehem alex cottrill 96 alpha tau omega fraternity philanthropy chair man was very pleased with his house's participation please see
