the brown and white vol 101 no 46 tuesday may 3 1994 all the lehigh news first delta phi hosts beach blast by abbasia khan news writer while working on their tans lis tening to music and hearing jokes from the master of ceremonies ap proximately 40 teams participated in delta phi fraternity's annual volley ball tournament beach blast to raise money for the big brothers and big sisters of the lehigh valley the fundraiser was held in delta phi's parking lot on saturday from 10 a.m to 5 p.m and was open to the public andrew levenson 95 president of delta phi said we've been do ing this for the same charity for 1 1 or 1 2 years we usually have 50 entries and we are anticipating to donate somewhere between 500 and 750 most participants entered the tour nament to have a good time and because it was for a good cause rich sullo 97 of the flaming llamas are the one s to beat said i entered because i like to play volley ball and it's for charity so far i've had fun and i'm happy because we won the first round shanelle trittle 97 member of the supresas dominicanas said i'm here not only because it's for charity but to have a good time also two games were played simulta neously consisting of three men and three women on each team the en try fee was 10 per person and all players received free t-shirts the parking lot was covered with 120 tons of sand which was donated by a construction company michael barr associate director of residential services said i'm not responsible for getting the sand 1 just give them clearance to bring in the sand and when to put it down sororities also took part in the fundraiser by bringing food we're going to have a barbecue but alpha phi delta gamma and gamma phi beta are going to supply us with the food levenson said david sansaverino 94 and jus bergamo news writer gamma phi beta sorority and delta tau delta fraternity organized an intergenerational prom with the elderly at the green meadows per sonal care home in allentown the prom took place at green meadows on wednesday april 27 from 6-8 p.m it was all glitz and glitter as the elders and students danced to a variety of music from both generations the dance took place in the living room of the home which was deco rated with white lights and sparkling silver stars that hung from the ceil ing the lights and decorations added to the theme of the dance which was called moonlit moments carnations and refreshments were distributed it was a big moment for the eld erly many of them either got new dresses or dressed in their best suits and ties most of them even started getting ready for the prom at two in the afternoon ron zoller 96 campus commu nity chairperson of delts collabo rated with andrea mccloud 96 philanthropy chairperson of gamma phi in the organization of the intergenerational prom zoller wanted to organize the dance because he thought that it would allow the two generations to come together and help break the stereo types of fraternities and sororities we are trying to integrate our generation with theoldergeneration zoller said we are giving back to the community this is not just a social event zoller wanted the event to be taken with a serious attitude and he wanted to prove to the elderly that fraterni ties and sororities do more than just party we want to show them that we re not only made of fun and games but that we want to help out the commu nity zoller said the intergenerational prom took months of preparation zoller and mccloud began organizing the dance before spring break according to mccloud all the time she invested was well worth it it turned out 10 times better than i thought it would be everyone was ralph nader to speak at litigation journalism symposium in rauch by andrea mccloud news writer a woman in florida dies of brain tumor her husband claims the tu mor was caused by the use of her cellular telephone although he had no legitimate evidence the media went wild the story could be seen in over 1 00 newspapers as well as on several network television stations across the country the media had practically condemned the cellular telephone company as guilty before the case had ever gone to trial it was this case that carole m gomey associate professor of jour nalism and communication later used to exemplify the topic she coined litigation journalism in her article in the new york times litigation journalism is a scourge such examples of litigation jour nalism appear in today's media a symposium on litigation jour nalism will beheld in perejla audito rium in rauch business center on may 5 and 6 the symposium will be led by consumer advocate ralph nader abc-tv correspondent catherine crier and washington d.c trial and litigation lawyer robert bennett a distinguished panel of eight experts in media law education and public relations will also participate in the event gorney defines litigation jour nalism as the use and/or manipula tion of the news and the information media in order to generate support for the plaintiff s position in civil law suits the popularity of using the media to gain favorable publicity for the plaintiff is becoming an all too com mon practice according to gorney after six years of study she real ized this was an issue which needed to be addressed by the public i want to see this placed on the american agenda she said i thought it would make a great op-ed piece in the new york times but i needed a peg something on which to hang your story gorney said i wanted to call attention to what i thought was an injustice the cellular telephone story was the peg and the spark which lit the ralph nader guest speaker nation's interest in litigation jour nalism after the article's appearance in the new york times gorney re ceived numerous requests to write speak and lecture on this new topic she realized that this was an issue of interest nationwide it was at this time she decided perhaps she should pursue it and claim it as a lehigh issue and
