the brown and white vol 101 no 41 all the lehigh news first taylor college to host byob party by geoffrey s colon news editor for the first time under the new social policy a residence hall will be hosting a party where alcohol is allowed every spring residence halls host parties and barbecues not straying from normal festivities taylor col lege has planned an outdoor party in their quad tonight from 7-11 p.m however an addition is that the event will be bring your own beerfor 21 year-old students alcohol is mainly known for be ing part of the hill in fraternities but the offices of student life and resi dence life actually encouraged the residents at taylor who organized the event to make it byob keith tessler 95 the event's organizer said we asked resi dence life who told us to do it byob . the one rule we have to follow is the ifc rule that we follow byob tessler said the idea for the party actually came from mark erickson dean of student life erickson said what i would like to see is more even events in social life on campus there should be more events like this in residence halls erickson said there is no rule against a residence hall hosting this type of event all the social policy rules are the rules erickson said all the same things apply to all living groups tessler said residence life is al lowing the byob party to give the students another option where there is alcohol i know a lot of people who don't feel comfortable at frater nities or cocktails but in their own building he said i erickson said he told taylor resi-l dents to implement the idea because the age group is mixed he said he did not see this type of event happen ing at all residence halls erickson said if thc event is suc cessful and the group can get them selves organized there is a future for parties like this al both taylor and trembley park which have students extensive damage to m&m halls by lindsey ellison news writer mcclintic-marshall house has rung up the most extensive damage for any residence hall with estimates of repairs being placed at 2,139 according to ozzie breiner associ ate director of residential services breiner said the estimate was for damage incurred between jan 16 and march 16 the m&m total eclipses the second highest damage bill which was for dravo house with damages of just 722 damages to the building consist of missing or destroyed bulletin boards in every hall discharged fire extinguishers and bathroom entrance doors and stall doors which have been ripped off their hinges although damages have occurred throughout the building the men's third floor b-3 has had the highest damage report the hall consists of 50 members and each member has been individually charged 40 to pay for the 2,000 charged to this hall alone two sinks were ripped out of the wall on the common room floor and the main bathroom doors were ripped out of their hinges on b-3 breiner and m&m hall director carin beyer do not know the motive behind the damage but feel that it is student related during all the snow storms and canceled classes they may not have had anything to do maybe they were just bored beyer said we expect damages but this is just blatant disre gard for the building beyer and residential services have made m&m aware of the prob lem by sending a letter to each resi dent notifying them that they will be billed breiner said the overall reac tion of the residents is apathy more than anger surprisingly neither breiner nor beyer have heard too many complaints to some students in lehigh paying 12 is just a lunch breiner said to others 1 2 is three hours of work and those are the people i hear from ordinarily residential services only send a bi-monthly summary to each residence hall which reports the rising damage costs as an incentive to monday night at sinclair auditorium snodgrass read several poems including some from his latest po etry book each in his seasons snodgrass also read his poem the examination a satirical poem depicting the college shaping of a student's mind before each poem snodgrass told stories of his life and commented about the meaning and inspiration behind each of his works he seemed to me to be richly evocative in his descriptions of the poems he provided especially the one about lute and the last one about the curse on the harpsichord maker jack de bellis professor of english said other poems included a poem on a great horned owl elena choushecka s bed a selection from snow songs and a curse against a.h the poetry reading and reception was presented as part of the mark twain lecture series the mark twain lecture series brings nation ally known writers to campus the series is underwritten by a grant form jack j dreyfus jr 34 julie houston teacher of creative writing at northampton community college and lehigh's summer writ ing coach arranged for the program w.d snodgrass is one of the most important a merican poets both because of his wonderful creativity and his use of multidimensional po etry with painting houston said having w.d snodgrass appear is a real treat it is not every day that you hear a pulitzer prize-winning poet read to you kathy richards col lege
