the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 101 no 34 friday march 11 1994 all the lehigh news first damage estimate adds questions to alpha phi formal by paul hare associate editor further investigation into last semester's alpha phi sorority winter formal has revealed billing confu sion on the part of the candlelight inn restaurant m bethlehem m con nection with the event the sorority held their winter for mal m november at the candlelight inn where it was found that student misconduct resulted m damage to the establishment the sorority was subsequently found guilty by the uni versity m january of improper con duct and put on disciplinary proba tion through the spring 1994 at the time of the university's decision how ever there had been no official damage esti mate submitted by the candle light inn to ei ther lehigh university m the univer sity investiga tion into the situation headed by bob robeson associate dean for greek affairs stated m an adminis tration memo that on nov 16 1993 mr k isner estimated that the dam ages would be over 800 accord ing to robeson his investigation found that the damage incurred by the candlelight inn was found to be far less serious than the original 3,000 to 4,000 figure given by mmmmmmmmm "/ was under the impression that we would only be charged for the damage to one of the panels franceses turner 3,532 for the repair of four panels m the establishment's soundproof wall on the estimate dated jan 21 1994 were handwrit ten remarks circling the estimate price and a note stating we will accept this as payment and not include an additional 900 to fix bathroom fix tures etc the remarks were signed by kisner this figure shocked alpha phi members francescatumer,'94 alpha phi's president at the time of the formal had concerns about the bill and con tacted kisner der the impres sion that we would only be turner said kisner and asked him about the bill there was si lence and he said that he would get back to me m five minutes kisner returned turner's call and claimed that a mistake had been made and the sorority would only be charged $ 1 500 for repair of damage not the original 3,532 m the square delta gamma put on probation by paul hare associate editor following two months of weather related delays delta gamma soror ity was found guilty monday by ad ministration officials of misconduct at their winter formal at the radison hotel m allentown and placed on disciplinary probation through the spring of 1994 according to mark erickson dean of student life the sorority will be prohibited from holding any off-cam pus formal function with alcohol through the spring in addition to probation delta gamma is required to settle all accounts with the radison hotel as well erickson said the penalty handed down was identical to the sanctions levied against the alpha phi sorority for a similar incident at the candlelight inn m bethlehem on the same week end a university investigation into the incidents was launched follow ing reports of damage estimates from the functions ranging into the thou sands of dollars associate dean of student life terrence curran who was involved m the disciplining of the delta gamma and alpha phi cases feels that the sororities were placed m com promising positions by the catering establishments delta gamma paid for a secu rity guard which was never hired by the establishment curran said that did not show very good judge ment on the part of that establish ment curran pointed out that m the delta gamma situation the radison was uncooperative with university officials during their investigation we made numerous requests for information regarding damage and information from that night and we felt that they were very lax curran said the follow-through was not what we would have expected my opinion is that the raddison had enough time to speak to the morning call but when we needed informa tion from them to deal with the mat ter they didn't have as much time to cooperate with us curran said snow causes trash pile up by abb asia khan news writer trash and recy cleables have been piling up m the bethlehem area due to the inclement weather we have been having difficul ties m getting to some of the roads because of the narrowness of the roads tom marshall bethlehem recycling coordinator said marshall said the wheel base of the recycling trucks are very wide therefore the trucks cannot get through the narrow streets with snow clustered there the snow gets plowed from one street to another which cuts down the turning radius of the long trucks marshall said i have asked the com pany to make special arrangements by using smaller trucks but we have taken care of most areas m the city montclair birkel and south side are difficult areas to pick up trash and recycleables birkel is a problem getting to because it is a very narrow street marshall said for off-campus hous ing students park closer m the road because of the snow i have a small nissan truck and lean barely getiton birkej off-campus resident george schmidt 94 said he has been expe riencing many problems with his trash pick up because of the bad weather it's been really bad schmidt said there are four or five bags sitting on montclair everytime we get a break m the weather there's more snow assistant recycling coordinator stacy milo said to help this situa tion the company has worked on two or three saturdays we are try ing to catch up as much as we can weather conditions even with spe cial pick ups is difficult even though the forecast calls for more snow the trucks will start collecting at 6 a.m and keep work ing until it becomes slick she said chris morrissey 95 lives off campus on third street it was really bad for a while but eventually it was picked up even though it took a couple of days he said harvey joseph supervisor of sanitation said because of the weather at least one storm a week sometimes two makes it very hard to pick up garbage m alleys and streets and it's difficult enough to go up hills although the weather has caused problems for many bethlehem resi dents those of northern bethlehem have had trash and recycling pick ups as scheduled stephanie chernobyl a resident of north bethlehem said we have excellent collectors they have come every tuesday as usual even m this weather jean greenleaf 97 is also a resident of north bethlehem greenleaf said that the northern part of bethlehem is open to commuters so the original pick-up schedule is followed for safety reasons we're probably not having any problems
