news writer due to increased concern about the effects of smoke on nonsmoking patrons stabler arena has ex tended its smoking ban through out the building when stabler opened m | 1979 smoking was permitted m restrooms hallways and lob bies under plans recently an nounced by stabler management these areas will also be off limits to smokers as of this spring richard fritz director of stabler made the decision m mid-january , with wide-spread uni versity support the decision was made for a variety of reasons according to fritz including the lack of a ventilation system that could permit a safe smoking environment fritz expressed concern for the ering patrons who could not their seats or use the is without walking through we have nothing against smokers but the second-hand smoke issues and die public referendum could no longer be ignored fritz said other reasons to implement the ban con cerned the destruction of the arena itself al though smoking was not permitted on the arena floor some people disregarded that rule and bum marks can be seen on the floors and chairs m stabler fritz told lehigh week that an expensive tarp covering used m the arena was filled with holes from cigarette burns fritz further stated there was no intention to surprise anyone with the decision and there fore he sent out the proposal to all lehigh departments associated with the arena prior to making the decision fritz said there has been nothing but posi tive responses since the decision was made some students both smokers and nonsmok crs agreed with the decision to make the arena smoke-free mark flanzcr 94 a nonsmoker said it's about time there is no reason why anyone should be subject to the health hazards associ ated with second-hand smoke he said jeff lagrassa 94 is a smoker who felt he could work around the new rule if i go to an event at stabler i can smoke before and after lagrassa said i can go three hours without a cigarette fritz said when people enter the arena they will be well aware of the rule and that enforce ment will be conducted m as polite a manner as psychic fair lets students peek into their future by peter sorkin news writer in part because of a growing de mand for new and exciting alterna tives to the party scene at lehigh and the relentless hawking of late night infomercials advertising psychic power to insomniacs the student activities council sponsored a psy chic fair last friday we did this last semester and it was a pretty big turnout said charles ciolino 97 who coordinated the psychic fair we decided this time to ex pand last semester we had one psy chic and because of the large turnout this time we got three psychics he said each psychic had his own spe cialty one read tarot cards one read palms and one looked into his crystal ball to read fortunes ' we wanted just to get everybody out this semester even if they didn't believe m it ciolino said maybe they'd walk away a believer while having a little fun bret ridgel 97 joined m the psychic activities which he felt were a great way to spend the night hie fair was a lot of fun and it's a great alternative to going up on the hill ridgel said because of the number of people that signed up there were long waits for the students who wanted to par ticipate m the fair but many partici pants did not mind waiting to hear about their fate cheryl isleib 97 withstood the wait and liked hearing about her fu ture even if it does not actually come true it's a cool idea to see what hap pens she said you don't really have to take it seriously bob hoffman whose wife ardela was one of the psychics at the fair commented on the psychic phenom ena my wife has been doing this almost 30 years and we have been married for about the same time he said she has been tested on her esp abilities and has consistently scored above an 88 percent accuracy on these tests she does horoscope read ings and she does tarot card read ings hoffman said she also does crystal readings and hand writing analysis being married to a psychic hoff man hears details of the life that lays ahead of him from time to time when we first got married she would read my future annual process of the gift campaign the campaign was kicked off again thursday night at the tally ho participating seniors will donate 100 or 200 depending on which method of payment they choose over a five year period starting this year the money collected will be placed into a bank account until the senior class five-year reunion at that time the class of 1 999 will give the 94 alumni a list of ways m which they would like to see the money spent the class of 94 will then pick one of the proposed ideas to spend the money on the unique thing about the se nior class gift is that unlike other gifts given to lehigh that are re stricted this is the one chance where we get to choose where we want our gift to go dana moyles 94 the general chairperson of the campaign committee the goal for the campaign is to receive contributions from at least 65 percent of the senior class surpass ing last year's campaign this adds up to about 650 students contribut ing we've had a pretty good turn out so far moyles said we don't think m terms of money it s m terms of percentage of the class that we can get the big idea is to beat last year s class to be m competition with them the committee believes
