associate editor alpha phi formal fiasco finalized with probationary period delta gamma's formal case is still pending as a result of a university investi gation into apparent misconduct of the alpha phi sorority during their winter formal at the candlelight inn in bethlehem the organization was placed on disciplinary probation through the spring semester of 1994 in addition to probationary sanc tions alpha phi will also be prohib ited from serving alcohol at any for mal function through the end of the semester according to bob robeson associate dean for greek affairs the administration began investi gations into both the alpha phi and the delta gamma sororities formats following reports that there was sig nificant damage at both candlelight inn and the site of the delta gamma function the radisson hotel in allentown damage estimates were reported to be more than 4,000 for both events delta gamma has not yet been disciplined by the university but according to robeson their case will be heard in the next few weeks associate dean of student life terrance curran felt that the deci sion that was handed down to alpha phi was fair since an organization must take responsibility for any func tion it sponsors but pointed out that the sorority as a whole should not be unfairly represented due to the mis conduct of a few individuals the university ] tries todeal with this incident by realizing that an or ganization must take responsibility for an event that they sponsor curran said but we feel that no matter how many safeguards are put into place there will always be po tential for a situation that sororities can not control ... there will always be two or three people who have a callous disregard for personal prop erty alpha phi president kim miller 96 agrees that her organization should hold some responsibility for what tool place buth feels theh atmosphereh by thch candlelighfl inn staff andh management was a majoih contributing factor to thi-j end result the candlelight inn went about controlling the situation by using physical and verbal force with the girls miller said our organiza tion was more than willing to help the candlelight staff with any prob we will hire a security guard for every formal and other functions to avoid a repeat of this incident kim miller alpha phi president lcms but they never asked according to curran the university's investigation found the candlelight inn's handling of the stage door showcases hard alternative bands by deana di dio assistant news editor psychomagnet leads an alternative music charge at lehigh on saturday three popular alternative bands rocked the stage door saturday in the first concert of the new year sponsored by wlvr the lead-off band was the phila delphia-based psychomagnet which is popular in alternative circles for their original songs but occasion ally covers other artists such as tif fany and john mellencamp covers of both artists were featured in saturday's show according to manager tim par sons the band enjoys doing covers of other songs because it allows the band to take an existing songs and change them to their own personal style often their finished product is completely different than the origi nal song and more appealing to their audience psychomagnet which is still cut ting demos performed their more popularoriginal songs baby blue are you happy and rage nate lanbdin a guitarist for psychomagnet was pleased with the whole concert event as he en joyed not only performing but also taking in the music of the other two featured bands archers of loaf a chapel hill n.c based band performed second this two-year old band featured songs off of their new album"lcky mettle according to the band their mu sic is inspired from a wide array of groups ranging from red red meat to air supply and their quirky sense of humor can be heard in their mainly alternative music matt gentling the archer's bass player described their music as hard rockin passionate news writer the first student senate book swap was held this week in the red lounge of the university center the book swap was created in order for the students of lehigh to get a better deal on buying and selling used books it's ridiculous that you go into the bookstore and sell it to them for 10 and then buy a used book for 40 said christina crane 95 mem ber of the student senate and one of the organizers of the book swap before students were limited in their options in selling books to ei ther the lehigh university book store or godfrey daniels where the student is cut out of a lot of the profit and a discount the bookswap usually starts with the person who wants to sell their books dropping off the books and filling out the appropriatepaper work a card with their name and number a card is placed inside the cover and then prospective buyers can then look for the books they want upon calling the owner of the book buyer and seller can then negotiate a price for the book vince cacciatore 94 chairman of the academic committee feels that the book swap system works well because it takes out any hassles and lets two people negotiate with each other cacciatore said this cuts out
