the brown and white vol 101 no 21 friday december 3 1993 all the lehigh news first lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 actor challenges stereotypes by dorsey montenecourt news writer actor-director blair underwood said his new film challenges religious stereotypes by presenting jesus christ as a black man in a lecture tuesday night at packard laboratory auditorium the movie the second coming which was shown prior to the lecture reflects some of underwood's own feelings about his color and religion if christ returned to earth today as a man of color he would be treated as blacks are treated in l.a underwood said he would be falsely accused the second coming is the first project of the underwood's quiet fury productions underwood directs produces and stars in the film this is underwood's third major movie role he won the staring role in the krush groove the cult movie chronicling the birth of rap music and was recently in the western posse with mario van peeples his most notarized role is that of attorney jonathan rollins on the nbc series la law the second coming is underwood s first attempt at directing at the lecture he made it clear that the subject of stereotypes and racism played a large part in his decision to make the film initially underwood spoke about his moti vations for making the film its historical sig nificance and the impact of images and their roles in the manipulation of history in order for us to restore some unity we need to begin tearing down some of these walls that have been erected underwood said if we can remove the color barriers of what christ is there is no reason for us not to unify he said he had wanted to make the movie for years but was finally inspired to after the rodney king trial and the los angeles riots that fol lowed the not guilty verdicts of the police offic ers involved underwood was also motivated by personal experience of discrimination he described one experience in los angeles where he was pulled over and violently interrogated and harassed by an officer that assumed that he had stolen the car photo courun of office of media relations actor-director blair underwood volunteer service to student from lehigh university come in read her mail and respond to any inquires when that student graduated kolbeth was lost in the shuffle that accompanies each chang ing year at lehigh university months turned into years as she waited for a new helper to arrive alone and unable to locate help kolbeth was forced to let important tasks like paying bills slip by last spring bethlehem mayor ken smith contacted lehigh's james harper director of community rela tions in reference to a note he re ceived regarding kolbeth ' s dilemma harper relayed the message to brooke marriott ' 94 an intern at the community relations desk of the chaplain's office who then relayed the message to rev john s mraz 71 director of the newman center mraz enrolled the woman in his adopt a-grandparent program and within a few days a student began helping kolbeth kolbeth s dilemma highlights two major problems hindering an effective community service pro gram at lehigh a lack of commit ment from the university and a lack of communication between agencies . one of the obstacles in the way of real commitment on campus is the administration itself people aren't aware of what's going on at lehigh marriott said ifc presidency having been a member of the executive board for the past year i feel i have a true grasp of what is expected of an interfraternity coun cil president toren said in my opinion i have proven both my leadership and responsibil ity in the past and will continue to do " so toren said also added to the executive com mittee was todd meadow 96 of phi gamma delta fraternity as vice president currently meadow is a jifc representative and rush chair man for fdi as vice president he will attempt to make better use of the ifc's com mittees and see that the jifc be comes more active as chairman of the committees i plan to hold meetings as often as possible with the committee heads to make sure progress is being made meadow said i also plan to get the jifc more involved as i felt
