the brown and white vol 101 no 16 all the lehigh news first tuesday november 9 1993 wlvr silenced for a week equipment and music thefts provoke renovations anti-theft security methods by susan mandel news writer wl vr went off the air on thurs day and will remain closed until 1 a.m this thursday in order to re place stolen equipment and renovate the studio in a response to the rash of burglaries plaguing the station the only shows being broadcast during this week are community shows that the station is contractu ally obligated to air according to james carrier 94 general manager of wlvr a lot of equipment has been stolen from the station since last may two compact disc players one valued at 700 along with a microphone two record player needles and cartridges and a countless number of compact discs have been taken from lite studio which is located in the basement of the university center members of the wlvr staff said the theft is believed to be committed by people connected with the radio station either disc jockeys or their friends bridgette marshall 96 a dj on wlvr feels betrayed by the insid ers who are responsible i knew it had to be going on because people from off the street don't have access to the studio marshall said it had to be an inside job andl'mreally disappointed about that the theft has created a big prob lem for wlvr and its djs with poor equipment and missing albums it was difficult to maintain the quality of the radio station dave friedman 96 next semester's co-sports director of the station is disappointed that he can not satisfy caller's requests we get listeners from as far as easton and allentown a lot of times people would call the station request ing us to play a new popular disc and it was missing friedman said tlie popular ones were the first to go within a matter of days new compact discs that were given to wlvr for promotion just weren't there any more it was getting to be a real problem the new equipment being in stalled will be bolted and chained to a table and djs will be required to take complete inventory of the equip ment when something is recorded as missing the directors will be able to pinpoint the time that it was taken in the past they had no way of knowing when things were removed from the studio so it could not be reported carrier believes the new system will force djs to become more re sponsible in the past there was a problem with djs just logging in their name and the time that they came into the studio now if they don't fill out the log they will face the consequence of being removed from the air car rier said friedman said the new system will deter theft because of the time and equipment accountability when your actions are being so carefully scrutinized people will be less likely to take dellinger news writer a tentative date is set for the opening of the new lehigh valley bagel co on friday tlie new store located on the coiner of fourth ind new streets will offer a variety of foods aside from bagels including deli sand wiches pastries fresh baked breads croissants and international coffees according to co-owner ed civello these are the finest bagels available he said they will offer a new york-style kettle boiled ba gel made fresh everyday it ' s not the kind of bagel you buy in a wawa or a grocery store civello said most of those are rack-oven cooked which means they skip a step boiling civello noted that their cooking process is essential to achieve the best flavor and texture available in a bagel when you boil a bagel it me tabolizes the sweetness in the ba gel civello said you also get a nice crispness and it tastes much better the lehigh valley bagel co has moved into the former residence of the short-lived campus food court when fully remodeled the store's production facility will have a glass partition that will allow customers to observe the baking process from the dough to the boiling to the bak ing customers will be in on every thing the 10,050 to cancer research by jennifer lev news writer alvin cohen professor of eco nomics and good scholar election treasurer won the fourth annual zeta psi good scholar election which raised 10,050 for the american cancer society the election ended sunday night in neville hall with an awards cer emony and the presentation of a check to the cancer society cohen and his group the inde pendent party raised 2 160 to win the election since cohen is ineli gible to accept the first place prize he donated the money to the american cancer society cohen thanked all groups that participated there are no losers only winners cohen said every organization paid 100 to be part of the event and regardless of the addi tional money they raised they recog nized the importance of cancer re search which
