the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 101 no 8 tuesday october 5 1993 all the lehigh news first more students are opting for off-campus residency by susan delazaro news writer this is part one of a two-part series about living off campus everyone from students to the administration to area residents be lieve that living off campus is be coming a more popular option of residency at lehigh michael barr associate director of residential services said that in 1983 out of the 4,414 undergraduate students 1,052 lived off campus in 1993 out of 4,430 undergraduate students 1,136 live off campus today nine fraternities have 10 or more beds that are not filled total ing nearly 200 empty beds.there is a 79.9 percent occupancy rate on the hill for 1 993 compared to a 93 per cent occupancy rate in 1983 these statistics may not be over a change has occurred since act 31 lehigh's greek system is trying to rebound at this point michael barr associate director of residential services whelming but they represent a trend in living options which can be traced back to the creation of act 31 . act 31 implemented in 1989 made the university liable for under age drinking instead of the student asa result lehigh sought to mini mize underage drinking because of the switch in liabilities creating stricter rules and regulations for on campus social policy bob robeson assistant dean for greek affairs said the move of the social scene to off campus can be attributed to the lighter social re strictions there thursday nights at fraternities are supposed to be party free so off-campus houses are the ones having parties and pub nights howard miller 89 is a gradu ate assistant in residential services and has noticed an increase in off campus popularity since his lehigh career began in 1985 before act 31 there were no security guards and minimal party restrictions . over the last few years , act 3 1 has caused the social scene to decline he said miller said with the new social policies fraternities lost one of their main drawing points and were not prepared with strong rush programs to fall back on barr agrees and said a change has occurred since act 3 1 . lehigh's greek system is trying to rebound at this point they must figure out how to recruit membership to keep thcir houses full this year with the large amount of fraternities on social probation off-campus parties have become popular beth-anne guthrie 94 who lives in a private house on warren square believes that students are opt ing for off-campus housing because it provides freedom from the con straints of on-campus living and the greek system many people feel that living off baw photo by steve lmff from left julie vorick deanne sabarese melissa muendel nicole ferber and lindsay berk man are seniors living off campus on east fifth street good scholar election to begin by christopher cococcia news writer campus organizations to help raise money for american cancer society zeta psi fraternity will sponsor the annual good scholar election to raise money for research for the american cancer society which will begin on oct 24 and end on nov 7 any group or organization can nominate a student to represent them in the election an individual can be nominated if he has at least a 3.25 grade point average once nominated anyone can vote for that scholar by donating money to the american can cer society a 1 donation is equal to one vote the scholar with the most votes by the end of the campaign is the winner alvin cohen professor of eco nomics and treasurer of the good scholar election sees many benefits of a fund-raising activity there are three main objectives for the good scholar election first we want to recognize scholarship on the lehigh campus second we want every organization at lehigh to be involved in a fund-raising activity and third it is a great way to raise money for cancer research cohen said the campaign will begin with a campus march on oct 24 starting from the top of the hill down through lower campus the participants for the march include all of the brothers students take stage at open mic night by michelle de mooy news writer open mic night v allowed le high students and other participants the opportunity to showcase their talents at the lehigh cafe on satur day night in front of a packed house created last year as a program in the creative arts house open mic night consists of a variety of musi cal cultural and eclectic talent several of the acts included acous tical guitar playing juggling acappella singing and a slightly bi zarre rendition of an irish ditty . other students read short writings of their own beginning in the creative arts house lounge the event gained popu b&wphtxo hy
