the brown and white vol 100 no 40 friday april 16,1993 lehigh university festival raises community spirit by amy mizoras news writer the fourth annual southside alive an event which will take place on the maginnes hall lawn from 10 a.m to 5 p.m tomorrow will bring different members of the bethlehem community together for games food and entertainment this year several changes have been made m the event sponsored by the southside merchants asso ciation and lehigh greeks this is the first time that it will take place m the spring during the afternoon and at maginnes in the past southside alive has been a night time carnival on the broughal middle school field krispin wagoner assistant dir rector of student life said the changes are part of an attempt to give the event a safer family atmo sphere and to encourage more members of the community to at tend the purpose of the southside alive festival is to bring together the campus and the local commu nity to celebrate cultural diversity ' she said southside alive will truly offer sometfiing for everyone musical entertainment including mexican dancers and two student bands will perform m a bandshell con structed on the lawn there will be clowns mcgruff the crime dog face painting fake tattoos hair braiding and lots of food radio station wgpa will broadcast live from the event a highlight of the day will be a sportsfest sponsored by greeks advocating the mature manage ment of alcohol the intramural department will also help to orga nize the games which will include volleyball lug-of war and ultimate frisbee . competition will take place between teams comprised of le high students or the public and individuals or teams which would like to compete can sign up on the day of the event another effort to diversify southside alive will help to insure that more individuals can partici open house held lor high school juniors by kim culver new writer lehigh's admissions office launched the sec ond open house of the season for high school jun iors wednesday accord ing to kirn brower admis sions counselor more than 300 students from an over the country signed up to partici pate m this event the campus was packed said prospective students and their parents on a campus tour former electrical engineering professor dies by david mederrick assistant news editor richard denton professor of electri cal engineering died in st luke s hospi tal last friday at age 61 denton was a professor at lehigh for six years until retiring just over a month ago before that he worked for bell labo ratories whippany n.j for 25 years in that time he earned numerous patents on solid-state devices and optical communi cation systems before retiring as supervi sor in 1986 denton received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1953 and his master's degree in 1954 from penn state university he completed his doctorate in electrical engineering in 1961 at the uni versity of michigan he was fellow of the institute of elec trical and electronics engineers and he served as secretary of kappa delta rho fraternity photo courtesy of office of media relations richard denton he was bom m york york county and was the son of the late john and gertrude denton denton was a member of the saints simon and jude catholic church bethle hem denton is survived by his wife jeanette his sons michael thomas john mat thew stephen and christopher daugh ters theresa amelia susan eileen and elizabeth stepmother miriam his half brother and sister daniel and dorothy and 10 grandchildren memorial services were held mon day at connell funeral home m bethlehem students help tutor bethlehem residents by douglas chen news writer instead of writing a paper students have been given the opportunity to do something more challenging and interesting by volun teering to work at local agencies as part of their sociology 152 course the course titled alcohol science and society has encouraged students to work with people m the community students have set up tutoring programs m places such as the south side bethlehem library and the northampton county prison the students tutor people m a wide range of subjects they mainly help people prepare fortheirhighschool equivalency exam com monly known as ged or tutor them m english as a second language many of the tutees are very intelligent but are foreigners who speak very little english this is a good opportunity to engage m this kind of activity i hope that after lehigh the students will continue volunteering said james mcintosh professor of social rela tions and the instructor of the course not all of the students work with the adults holly rybak 94 has been able to tutor children m the holy infancy school located onfourth and websterstreets rybak is satisfying requirements for social relations and education classes by tutoring fifth and sixth graders m everything from english to math to study habits i thought the kids were going to be disrespectful because i was a lehigh student and they lived m bethlehem rybak said but they were really great the program was put together with the help of the pennsylvania literacy core and was funded by the pennsylvania department of labor and industry the students must volunteer a minimum of 40 hours m order to receive full credit m the course and they also must go through training before becoming eligible to tutor someone the program has been very successful so far and the community interaction has brought many positive results this is one positive step m having students and the uni versity take part m the community i work-study eases the financial burden for students page 7
