the brown and white vol 100 no 26 tuesday february 2 1993 lehigh university we jammin brad moose 96 plays one of his two songs saturday night at the third open mlc night twenty-five artists performed music and poetry for a packed house at the lehlgh cafe the event was organized by doug silver 93 gryphon of the creative arts house in warren square the arts house and late night at lehlgh co sponsored the event ifc hopes to steady lagging greek population by vincent keane production editor the interfraternity council hopes to sta bilize declining numbers in the greek system while improving the image of the fraternity system by incorporating a minimum grade point average rush advisors and a later rush the panhellenic council has always re quired a 2.0 gpa for sorority pledges but this is the first year that the ifc has required a prospective pledge to have a 1.8 gpa for eligibility the ifc ruling places the minimum gpa above the 1.6 academic probation mark for first-semester freshmen the ifc plans to gradually increase the requirement to 2.0 as houses become accus tomed to the new standards garry foltz newly elected ifc president said we want solid people in the greek system bob robeson assistant dean of students said the higher standard may disqualify some people but the process should help solidify the greek system i think it is a huge step robeson said ever since i've been here i've been trying to get them to do it it's evidence that the ifc doesn't always do what i ask them students who fail to meet the required 1.8 gpa may petition for an exception if extenuating circumstances exist but ac cording to foltz this process is going to be rather strict foltz 94 said it could cut them out but we feel we need a standard grace computing center upgraded by sharon herzka science editor the computing center at grace hall has been recently upgraded and renovated to improve services for students who spend endless hours at lehigh's only 24-hour com puter facility carol lidie associate director of com puting facilities said the newly installed computers will be faster ten ibm 486 and 20 ncr 386 computers with color monitors were installed over win ter break all computers at the site are equipped with 3.5 inch disk drives lidie said software tools that require faster systems will function better lidie said structural changes were made to the site as part of the renovation including the construction of a wall that isolates the room from the rest of grace hall this will allow for greater privacy and quiet when classes are taught at the facility she said although all pcs have been replaced lidie said the furniture was not renovated because of previous vandalism at the site in addition the facility will be closed friday and saturday nights to reduce the risk of vandalism lidie said although the facility will still be open around the clock during tlie week it will be closed friday at 6 p.m until saturday at 8 a.m and again from saturday 8 p.m to sunday at 8 a.m the next site to undergo upgrading of the pcs will probably be the computing center at packard laboratory lidie said upgrading should take place by the sum mer photo courtesy of the office of media relations clifton davis two tributes at lehigh honor king by kristin cuscela assistant news editor dr martin luther king was a man will ing to pay the price of freedom said actor and singer clifton davis at the lehigh tribute to the late civil-rights leader on sunday davis spoke at one of two events held in the last week to honor king on thursday selected poems and prose were read by members of the lehigh com munity in the commons room at drown hall at noon to observe martin luther king jr day the event was sponsored by the office of student life the chaplain's office and the english department the keynote speaker was university chaplain lloyd steffen who delivered a eulogy to the recently deceased supreme court justice thurgood marshall it was a chance for the community to come together for dr martin luther king jr steffen said steffen was slightly disappointed with the amount of people who attended because he feels honoring king is important we had more publicity last year steffen said how ever it is important that those who attended had a meaningful experience poems and stories by prominent black poets and authors were read at the tribute by both students and faculty one poem fea tured was on the pulse of morning which was read at president clinton's inauguration by author maya angelou sharon brown assistant dean of student life read benjamin mays eulogy to king i felt the eulogy was fitting for today said brown who also organized the event see rush page 1 1 see king page 1 1 see grace page 1 1 nature vs nurture pits science against sociology page 5
