the brown and white vol 100 no 25 friday january 29 1993 lehigh university pi lam found guilty of sexual harassment by marc j goldstein managing editor pi lambda phi fraternity was found guilty of one of two charges of sexual harassment last semester by the university committee on discipline according to b ob robeson assistant dean for greek affairs two alleged incidents were brought to the attention of university admin istrators in october pi lam was charged with violations of the university code of conduct specifically of fenses against another person which in clude harassment the code of conduct defines sexual ha rassment as attempting to coerce an unwill ing person into a sexual relationship at tempting to subject a person to unwanted sexual attention or creating a sexually in timidating hostile or offensive social or educational environment robeson said it was the final part of the definition that was relevant to these two charges it was determined in the investigation that the environment for sexual harassment was either encouraged or fostered at least not prevented by pi lambda phi robeson said robeson would confirm if any university action had been taken against individual members of the house he also said he could not discuss the specifics of the alleged ha rassment the sanctions included a disciplinary warning which indicated future violations of the code of conduct would result in more severe sanctions all members of the frater nity had to complete a sexual harassment seminar by the end of last semester additionally , the house must draft a state ment of policy about sexual harassment to be read and signed by all members of the frater nity before it is presented to alumni of the fraternity the governing board and terrence curran associate dean of students randall berman 94 president of pi lagi declined to comment on the case because investigations were continuing faculty may dump pass-fail by thomas wolfe editorial page editor a faculty member's proposal to abolish the pass-fail grading sys tem was criticized in a student sen ate meeting tuesday members agreed to support the current pass fail system at the next faculty meeting on monday the proposal to abolish the pass fail system was made at a faculty meeting last semester according to ken hoexter 93 senate president faculty members have become disenchanted with seniors taking classes designed for underclassmen however according to the le high course catalog each college faculty shall decide under what conditions and which courses or categories of courses throughout the university may be taken for pass fail credit by students ... each college shall keep the educational policy committee advised of changes in its rules this means that faculty can determine whether or not an upperclassman can take a course pass-fail according to hoexter a pro posal was made at the faculty meet ing to change the minimum passing requirement in a pass fail course to the equivalent of a c minus an other faculty member suggested abolishing the system altogether faculty sees this as a way to cut down all abuses hoexter said and if you want to take a course you'll have to take it for a grade jordan barnett 93 senate trea surer said there is a problem with the current pass-fail system i was in a class last semester where it was obvious half of the b&w photo fey court hafison goodbye parking crunch the recently-completed parking lot on the former premises of the globe-times buildings brodhead avenue can hold 69 cars the lot will only be for faculty and staff studs host shirks tv show for comedy routine by maclean guthrie assistant news editor an audience in lower grace hall ex pecting lehigh students to participate in a non-televised version of studs was dis appointed when studs host mark decarlo performed a stand-up comedy rou tine in its place saturday night ben huber graduate assistant of the stu dent activities council said decarlo s agent misrepresented the event we were under the assumption that we were getting studs " he said instead decarlo did a stand-up comedy show involving jokes about drugs dating the sexes and police a bulk of decarlo's audience left the performance when they realized they were not going to see a live studs show i feel like i'm in a train station there's so much commotion decarlo said during the show sac assumed that the show was going to be a live studs game show because of the information it received from decarlo's agent kevin mccaffrey 93 was disappointed with decarlo it was a true letdown he said i had such high expectations of mark decarlo and i do not know if i still consider myself a big fan of his lee sperling 94 agreed i was expecting studs " he said i don't know if i would've come if i'd known it was going to be just stand-up sac would ' ve been better off just hiring a real stand-up comic for what they got decarlo said this is my regular show not studs i go out and do stand-up people
