brown and white vol 100 no 22 frida lehigh university , december 4 1 992 hill sororities to move into vacant fraternities by fred taylor news writer alpha chi omega and delta zeta sorori ties made the decision to move into theta delta chi and sigma phi epsilon's houses in fall 1993 with the recolonization of sigma chi and alpha chi rho fraternities they will now move back into their old houses which two sororities currently occupy since the na tional fraternities made an agreement with the university when they first built the frater nity buildings each particular fraternity is entitled to the building when it wants to recolonize trisha pepe 93 vice-president of the panhellenic council said the administra tion needs to put permanent sorority housing as one of their top priorities because it is not fair for these sororities to be without a home the university seems to cater to the men when it s the sororities who do a lot more for the school and community however the sororities are not left with out options jennifer volchko associate dean of student life said the university formed a sorority housing committee to look into possibilities for permanent housing and the committee came back with two recommen dations one idea is to convert drinker house into a sorority house but only at high cost to lehigh the second option is to move them into the vacated fraternity houses already on the hill the sorority housing committee is com posed of members from alpha chi and dz faculty advisors and the director of student life both sororities opted to stay on the hill in temporary housing everyone involved in the decision seems pleased with the outcome and felt this deci sion was the best for the present time bob robeson assistant dean for greek affairs said it is important for women to stay on the hill to give the hill some diver sity with a mixture of people living there ifc moves fraternity rush to spring semester byob called effective by amy gorman news writer fraternity rush will be moved back until spring semester the interfratemity council decided at their meeting nov 24 thomas durkin 94 president of phi gamma delta fraternity said i feel it is a good move because it will help occupancy throughout the hill it will also help eliminate the typical pres sures of freshman rush also discussed were concerns over the b yob policy now that the trial run is over the effectiveness of the system was men tioned because many students still feel that they will be able to receive beer at the fraternity parties if 10 houses are partying and nine of them follow the book there will be a whole lot of people at one party and not at the others said dave weiss 93 ifc president the only way to change the attitude when they come up expecting something is to see that they don't get it weiss said the behavior of the fraternities at the lehigh lafayette game was commended you all conducted yourselves well saidßob robeson assistant dean for greek affairs you all did really well working with the guys in your house and i'd like to congratulate you however there were still mixed feelings about how this year's game was handled although some people thought the 10:45 a.m start time was a success in curtailing vio lence it was more due to the increase in security said bob rieckelman 95 president of phi kappa theta fraternity rieckelman said it was also a problem for the houses with alumni relations alumni turnout at lehigh-lafayette was severely minimized the main disadvantage was to the alumni and their families who were coming from far away and could not make it up there on time the last meeting for the ifc this semester is tuesday at 7 p.m in the university center elections for ifc positions for next semester will be held at this time b&w virtual reality bruce franklin john cotton dana pro fessor of english and american studies at rutgers university attempted to solve this dilemma in a discussion about his book m.1 a mythjnaking in america last tuesday in packard laboratory auditorium as a result of the outcome of the gulf war president bush claims the vietnam syndrome'-people's resistance to united states intervention abroad-has finally been kicked franklin disagrees he believes that bush is correct in his prognosis-the u.s has been suffering from the vietnam syndrome but thinks that bush's diagnosis is incorrect the vietnam war is not over for america frariklin said according to franklin in an average group 70 percent belie ve that there are pows still in vietnam however 100 percent be lieve that the united states government is lying about the whole po w issue franklin does not believe that there are any living pows today live pows defies common sense franklin said why would the vietnamese hold them for so many years franklin questions why there is such com mitment to an issue that has no credible or verifiable evidence that proves pows are still living according to franklin the reality is that
