the brown and white vol 100 no 20 tuesday november 24 1 992 lehigh university tradition falls goalposts still standing by jennifer montemurro editor in chief it really could have gone either way the outcome of both saturday's lehigh lafayette football game and the aftermath of the matchup were up-in-the-air right to the buzzer the lafayette leopards now patriot league champions won the 128th confron tation between the two teams for the first time in two years 32-29 in spite of additional pre-game hype this season the spectators on both sides of fisher field filed out of the stadium in a calm orderly fashion new regulations sparked by the melee following last year's game in which students battled with police officers guarding the metal goalposts met with high levels of student backlash and administrators at both schools prepared for a potential showdown with the students rumors of a lafayette student boycott in response to the new policies proved un founded as the lafayette ticket office re ported the game was sold out as of wednes day in effort to curtail the pre-game drinking believed to be a direct cause of the post-game violence lafayette decided to start the game at 10:45 a.m rather than the traditional 1 p.m kickoff a 10 ticket charge was instituted to defray the cost of the added security thirty four eastonpolice officers dressed in riot gear and 80 spectaguards brought in from the philadelphia spectrum were on hand to help maintain order both during and after the game john border chief of easton police was pleasantly suprised by the subdued post game behavior the whole feeling beforehand was that this game was going to be a different he said i give the college kids a lot of credit for restraining themselves and the colleges too for finally putting their foot down he added recycling advocate supports homeless by maclean guthrie news writer the founder of the we can recycling program said nov 16 people need to become aware of the needs of homeless people guy polhemus speaking in neville auditorium said he be came aware of the homeless prob lem when he lost a bet and had to volunteer in a soup kitchen before that i think i did what most people did polhemus said i saw them i walked past them while at that soup kitchen polhemus saw homeless people who were thrown out of stores when they tried to return cans he re called one store owner who said if i give money to these guys i'd have them lined up around the block seeing the problems homeless people encounter polhemus pro cured a vacant lot on 43rd street in new york city he opened a redemption center that collected redeemable cans and bottles from the poor and home less the agony of defeat b&w photo by 8os bell mam mono 94 t maul hisem 94 and jen bjack 94 watch lehigh fall to arch-rival lafayette 32-29 see coverage of the 128th game on pages 8 9 and 1 6 united nations influence rising colonel says by robert dellinger news writer a colonel from the u.s army war col lege said wednesday national boundaries have become less important because of the increasing influence of the united nations col bruce claik speaking to a group of air force rotc students said president bush signed an agreement for the involve ment of the u.s military in peace keeping efforts there is a new term ~ peace enforce ment clark said that's where the united nations decides that it doesn't want these two sides fighting it goes in and enforces peace according to clark the increased influ ence of the united nations has decreased the sovereignty of nations thereby lessening the importance of international boundaries clark also spoke on the role the military could have on environmental clean up in the future how many chernobyls will we have to have before military forces will be sent by united natioas officials to secure to evacu smoking kills and ruins dates by annabel lukins news writer smoking not only can end lives but ruin love lives a mock version of the televi sion show studs held wednes day in packard laboratory audito rium matched smokers with non smokers to promote the great american smokeout studs students to unite don't smoke raised proceeds for the lehigh valley chapter of the american cancer society we have raised over $ 1 000 at this point said bryan campo 93 vice president of the marketing club sponsor of the event tickets were 1 so whatever we raise as rev enues at the show will be additional money given to the society ken matthews waeb fm disc jockey was chosen by the cancer society to host studs the first show had two studettes and three male dates the intention was to have both of the women be smokers however only one contestant tracy costaldo 94 was a smoker natalie nestor 95 was a non b&w photo by samantha ganz disc jockey ken matthews interviews two studettes seepolhemuspageio see clark page 10 see studs page 10 getting ready fora long winter's nap page 11
