vital interest in history is also a paramount qualification popular humorist here through scl his theory on humor revolutionizes music lovers prejudices henry l scott popular pianist and humorist will give a perfor mance at 8:15 wednesday night at grace hall tickets may be pur chased at the door and will cost 60 cents for dates and 1.20 for faculty members the gifted young man who has been dubbed the will rogers of the piano by music lovers sees a need for humor in the music of today in the spring of 1945 scott had proposed to give another of his humorous concerts in carne gie hall when a prominent con cert manager accosted him and of fered the statement that music levers are basically humorless peo ple they expect their concerts to be solemn affairs and will resent anyone who has fun with music no matter how artistically it may be done mr scott on the other hand has a great faifri in the openminded ness and sense of humor of amer ican audiences as he is a concert pianist himself and having a thor ough knowledge and appreciation of fine music he believed that pa trons and makers of music were also capable of laughing at them selves he played at carnegie hall on october 5 1945 before a pack ed house that included artists mu sicologists and critics the result was an uproarious evening — and a 50,000 guarantee from three man agers for his first full year to be booked as america's first con cert humorist among national publications to recognize this highly original style of art and entertainment combined were colliers feature story by kyle crichton life and who's who in america drama humor music scott believes that blending the arts of drama humor and music on the concert stage will in the long run do the most to make america music conscious concert humor is based on the premise that humor has a place in the con cert hall just as much as in opera in literature and in the plastic arts paradoxically scott is very ser ious about humor to project it artistically one must strive to un derstand the whole illusive and intangible realm of humor he contends he also practices what he preaches in his recitals where he ranges from pantomine to the spoken word from subtle satire to broad and riotous forms he writes and arranges all his own material scott started playing piano at an early age at his boyhood home in new york state piano studies occupied much of his time throughout his early school days and later at the college of fine arts at syracuse university establishes speed record in 1938 he established a world speed and accuracy record at aeo lian hall in new york where he played 44 two-third notes per second time magazine in report ing the event said famed al ways as a fast pianist was ignace jan paderewski in the fastest section of the hungarian rhap sody paderewski played 158 notes in 6 seconds or 26 notes a second henry scott managed to outspeed the great pole by one and one half seconds henry l scott at taches no great importance to this amazing record of technical achievement other than it gives him a greater opportunity to achieve his goal of reawakening the spirit of the composers whose works he playe.s scott has the added distinction in addition to his piano virtuos ity of being considered an author ity on swing music while his mu sical training was almost entirely classical scott has mastered all the forms of music that have be come popular in recent years he is equally at home running thru bach is he is taking a hot lick on a new orleans number brown and white chick henzelman business manager of the 1947 epitome announced that anyone other than 1947 seniors who have paid for the book but not re ceived it should call him at 6-6046 don't forget the pep rally friday night the rally starts at 7:30 wih a parade beginning at the alpha tau omega fra ternity house on campus and marching down to grace hall
