university in the first in tercollegiate debate of the season held tuesday nov 11 in christ mas-saucon hall the topic under discussion was there should be a world feder ation the affirmative was up held by robert mertz 48 and robert polstein 48 members of lehigh's debating team while ir ving kuhr and larry dantonio of temple argued for the negative prof raymond cowherd of the history department judged the contest the first affirmative speaker was bob polstein who contested that the atomic bomb has left the world in a state where no military de fenses are worthwhile and there fore wars must be eliminated he stated that as yet the united na tions has accomplished nothing more in this direction than did the leagues and confederations of the past now is the time for a world federation to be instituted as there are enough nations ready and willing to join said polstein irving kuhr the first speaker for temple pointed out that such a system of world government would deprive the member nations of their sovereignty he asserted that there was no common basis for establishing such a system be cause of differences in language culture economies and political forms of government in addition he said that exponents of federa tion would have to show that it will prevent war world federation best hope bob mertz the second speaker for lehigh raised the point that historic evolution will eventually bring about world federation since nearly everything else has been tried and has failed he said that world federation is the best hope at this time and went on to out line a list of conference he said that such a system requires that every nation be a member and this could not be effected following the formel speeches each participant gave an unpre pared rebuttal professor cow interfraternity council the fall houseparty held last weekend was a financial and social success over 600 tickets were sold before friday night and the crowd that attended was estimated to be in the presented her with the gold cup the queen had been selected the previous evening by members of the var sity football squad miss fitch lives in plainfield n j attends hartridge school for girls is 17 years old and has never entered a beauty contest before the other award of the evening was the pre sentation of a cup by dixie davis promotion manager of the brown and white to mr and mrs rich ard stevick winners of the mr and mrs lehigh contest buddy rich and skitch hen derson played in an atmosphere of a starlight night the ceiling of grace hall was covered with black veiling interlaced with stars to represent an evening sky many couples not satisfied with this ef fect enjoyed the real sky from the balcony of grace hall music played by the bands was in an en joyable soft romantic mood as compared to the faster tempos of previous years this was in keep ing with the general trend of mu sic of the day idc holds breakfast following the formal dance in terdormitory council sponsored a breakfast which also proved to have the best attendance since pre-war days fraternity houses all had private parties or break fasts despite the obstacle of the weather the team added glory to the weekend by presenting lehigh with a 20-6 victory over king's point saturday afternoon's football game added variety to the week end with what looked like a heavy rainfall luckily enough the rain stopped just before game time and consequently the turnout for the afternon wasn't nearly as bad as was expected though having been exposed to the storm all afternoon the party goers still had enough stamina left to make the parties and dances scheduled for saturday evening successes comparable to the fri day night formal the wet frozen crowd changed to a jolly gay group again as they attended the various affairs about the campus in general it may be said that this houseparty brought lehigh parties back to pre-war standard this can be deduced from the af ter effects all during this week the following the formal dance in terdormitory council sponsored a breakfast which also proved to have the best attendance since pre-war days fraternity houses all had private parties or break fasts despite the obstacle of the weather the team added glory to the weekend by presenting lehigh with a 20-6 victory over king's point saturday afternoon's football game added variety to the week end with what looked like a heavy rainfall luckily enough the rain stopped just before game time and consequently the turnout for the afternon wasn't nearly as bad as was expected though having been exposed to the storm all afternoon the party goers still had enough stamina left to make the parties and dances scheduled for saturday evening successes comparable to the fri day night formal the wet frozen crowd changed to a jolly gay group again as they attended the various affairs about the campus in general it may be said that this houseparty brought lehigh parties back to pre-war standard this can on goblet rests with board of publications by tom harris the fate of the goblet lehigh student magazine is expected to be finally decided at a meeting of the board of publications monday goblet editor bob polstein 48 has submitted a list of staff mem bers and a proposed long-range budget to the board with the ap proval of these final matters the goblet will be ready for full scale work on its next issue the next issue is expected to come out a few days after christ mas vacation is over and three issues are planned for next semes ter the magazine will be a vari ety mag according to polstein with feature articles one or two short stories per issue jokes car toons the familiar monkeyshines column and an editorial the proposals now with the board of publications are the last of the carefully worked out plans made by the goblet already pass ed is a new constitution setting forth the ideal of the magazine as an outlet for creative effort ... to serve as a personal organ of ex pression for the lehigh family and setting up internal organiza tion the constitution was drawn up by a constitutional committee com posed of polstein robert m smith head of the english depart ment and c wilton requests of the goblet for a room in which to hold meetings have been received by dean cong don chairman of the board with a promise to do what he can to find a place until then the weekly meetings will probably be held in the reading room of the library lehigh marks first post-war homecoming alumni will celebrate traditional weekend with meetings brown and white lehigh university will celebrate its first post-war homecoming on the weekend of nov 21 22 and 23 the feature of the celebration will be the traditional lehigh-la fayette football game although the annual homecom ing weekend does not actually get under way until friday nov 21 throughout that week at lehigh alumni clubs in pennsylvania del aware new york and california will hold meetings throughout the week starting monday nov 17
