the brown and white vol 99 n0.23 friday december 6 1991 lehigh university thieves strike off-campus houses by vincent keane brown and white news writer nine burglaries on bethlehem's south side during thanksgiving break cost stu dents at least 4,800 according to donald sabo crime prevention officer with the bethlehem police department sabo along with lehigh university police sgt tony casciano cited student disinterest as well as poorly protected houses as main reasons for the crime wave which spread from carlton avenue to east fourth street several of the entrances sabo said were made through unlocked doors and windows casciano said that burglars knew when students had vacations we do know sabo said that we have a problem every year over breaks in addition to televisions and video cassette recorders students lost stereo equipment bedding clothes and other less-expected merchandise go into a department store and look around casciano said that's pretty much what's been stolen sabo said that cars are a big target and that most of the cars stolen are toyotas nissans and mazdas if you have a red toyota i suggest you sell it sabo said it is going to get stolen michael pachter 92 and thomas cargill 92 of west fourth street have been burglarized twice this semester last week they lost property worth between 2000 and 3000 it's getting to be absurd pachter said after the last incident the residents put two additional locks on the back door and installed deadbolt locks on all the interior doors it's getting like we have to make our house a prison cargill said cargill said that he thinks it was the same burglar but that this time he brought tools and had plenty of time to use them they had enough time cargill said to not only break all the locks but to selec tively sort through a container of change they didn't want the pennies car gill said they took the nickels dimes students condemn administration approximately 25 people attended a rally held on the university center lawn on thursday the students were protesting the administration's attempt to down-play the severity of the riot after the lehigh-lafayette football game likins talks about goalpost riot by erica crespi brown and white editor in chief more than 65 students filled dravo house's lounge tuesday to discuss the violence of this year's lehigh-lafay ette game with lehigh president pe ter likins and athletic director jo seph sterrett students spoke openly and candidly to likins and sterrett about their con cerns resulting from the post-game melee likins opened the meeting by asking the mostly male crowd what they would do as a member of the ad ministration about the situation at first there was silence but one student finally answered sarcastically put up metal goal posts followed by another who said put in cops with mace andrew levinson 95 said i don't think there's any way to win either way somebody is going to get hurt i see people getting hurt with either wooden or metal goal posts likins insisted there was more vio lence at last year's contest at lafay ette last year there was more physi cal violence he said that's a fact you have to register likins explained what we did this year was trade off physical injury which we did for emotional injury which is very serious jason project gives undersea adventure by christopher mautz brown and white news writer the jason project sailed into lehigh monday despite the recent accidental sinking of the million-dollar remote-piloted subma rine for which it is named the project allows students and teachers at lehigh and other sites throughout the country to view live images via satellite of biological experiments being performed in the galapa gos islands just days before the project's galapagos program was to begin nationwide the barge carrying an estimated 2.1 million worth of equipment including the project's namesake jason sub accidently sunk the coordinator of jason at lehigh as sistant science education professor judith bazler was at first unsure of the program's future without the submarine and other equip ment at the time of the accident we were done bazler said i knew we had some time but i wasn't sure whether or not we could get back on our feet in time what happened during the next three days was close to a miracle bazler said everything that was needed was somehow put together through donations loans and reduced-rate purchases the project was afloat once again since the program landed at lehigh on monday school children from the lehigh and delaware valleys and beyond have swarmed onto campus guided by bazler's army of volun teers grace hall has been transformed into mis sion control as the live pictures and scenes from the galapagos are shown on three large screens we hope to change kids attitudes about science with this project bazler said when kids think about science they often think it is boring and we want to change this kids are walking in saying wow this is see
