the brown and white vol 99 no 14 friday november 8 1991 lehigh university pro-abortion group forms on lu campus to rally for support by wendy elias brown and white news writer in response to the recent reemergence of an anti-abortion group on campus two lehigh stu dents have formed a pro-choice society the organizers rachel beck 92 and regan safier 93 said we founded the society m reac tion to anti-abortion groups on campus coupled with information and experiences we've had as interns at planned parenthood of northeast pennsylvania m trexlertown beck said the two are concerned about getting lehigh students involved pro-choice coalitions m comparison to anti-choice groups have not been as vocal and organized m years past due to the law being on their side she said with the changing u.s supreme court fed eral and state governments it is time for pro choice groups to re-activate and begin the fight to keep the law where it is she said beck said the group supports the labor health human services appropriation bill which will be discussed on both the house and senate floors this week in the bill there is a clause stating that no money can be spent enforcing title x other wise known as the gag rule for the next year in rust v sullivan the supreme court upheld the gag rule which according to beck and safier would make it illegal for any federally funded institution including planned parenthood chap ters that partly rely on federal dollars to mention abortion as an option for pregnant women even if a women is m a state of critical emergency no consultation about abortion can take place beck said safier said president bush will most probably veto this bill since he has not favored pro-abor tion legislation we want to get congress to override with powerful heavy metal music packed with political intrigue queensryche's intricate light show dazzled the crowd while they kept the sound quality of the performance equal to that of their albums the thing i like about the band is that their concerts sound just like their albums greg titus 91 said guitarists chris degarmo and michael wilton and bassist eddie jackson were stationed at points around the stage with drummer scott rock enfield positioned centrally two giant video screens showed excerpts of videos torn empire their current album beginning with their latest single jet city woman but one avid concertgoer noted the band was a little too professional a lot of the stuff lead singer geoff tate said m between songs was word for word what he said m the meadow lands greg dolce 92 said the video screens also connected more recent fans with the storyline from the band's previous album operation mindcrime known for being an intellectual heavy metal band queensyrche com bines soaring guitar riffs with politi cally aware lyrics i heard one song on the radio and i went out and bought the disc and it instantly became my favorite album joel rudy 93 said the first single from empire si lent lucidity became an mtv favor ite last summer giving queensyrche massive exposure and pushing them further into megametal stardom played as an encore sunday night student loan default crackdown proposed by shenid bhayroo brown and white news writer the government soon may combat spiralling student loan defaults with a new program linking these payments to future income dissatisfied with the current pace of student loan reform rep thomas e petri wisconsin has developed a de fault-free student loan program along with 58 other co-sponsors petri has in troduced the income dependent educa tion assistance or idea act as a way to alleviate the current crises thecoreoftheldeaactisthatitwill provide generous unsubsidized loans to middle class students linking repayment terms to the students future incomes any student would be permitted to bor row up to 70,000 for four years of col lege loans will accumulate interest charges from the first day but repayments will only begin once the borrower has taxable earnings and would rise progressively with a cap of 19 percent of income for high earners a graduate earning 40,000 a year would pay around 2,700 a year to service a 20,000 education debt what will make borrowers less likely to default is the fact that the loans will be deducted from their paychecks along with income and social security taxes to beat the system borrowers will have to cheat on their income taxes petri sees this as a fool-proof system saving the u.s government si billion a year the proposal has yet to be taken seriously by capitol hill and president
