hundred lehigh uni versity alumni directories each weighing one and one-half pounds are now being delivered by the university alumni association ac cording to leonard h schick ex ecutive secretary the books the last of which will be delivered by nov 1 list the names of all 18,124 lehigh alumni with their addresses occupations class and degree and are the first directories that have been issued since 1937 in addition to the alphabetical listing the directory groups men by city and state the names of all trustees teachers and students in school at the time of publica tion are included also featured in the directory are the names of all recipients of honorary degrees conferred by le high since 1906 and charts show ing the size of each lehigh class and the number of men from each who have died seniors vote for class gift over 200 seniors attended the senior class meeting in grace hall on thursday and heard e robins morgan director of the placement bureau speak on the workings of the placement bureau herbert hotchkiss associate professor of finance was named faculty adviser gene savers sen ior class president named the chairmen of the committees and asked for volunteers for commit tee duty the class-gift memorial pro gram was brought up and it was decided that there would be a 250-20 year endowment by each student epitome editor richard jones reported that there would be an 8 assessment on all seniors the yearbook will come out on ap proximately may 15 it was voted that gene saver's name be put on the senior cane each year the senior president is honored in this way the subject of class-rings was discussed and a committee was organized to look into the matter largest class in lu history in the making total enrollment 3427 students represent 34 states 15 countries the class of june 1949 may pro duce the largest graduating class in the history of the university mr george b curtis registrar announced recently now listed as potential graduates for that time the 576 men sophomores out number each of the other three classes at this time among the 2961 students now studying at the university 871 are second-year undergraduates the seniors comprise the smallest group since only 548 are enrolled the undergraduates are from 34 states the district of columbia and 15 foreign lands the largest group of students is from penn sylvania since 1561 come from that state mr curtis stated also that 336 graduate student are taking courses here and 130 other students are enrolled in the adult education program this brings the total number of students at lehigh this fall to 3427 engineers lead engineering leads the parade as the most popular division at the university with 1818 undergradu ates registered in the nine depart ments of the college of engineer ing the largest group of engineers are those majoring in mechanical engineering there are 706 men entered in the college of business administration and 442 in the college of arts and science mr curtis declared that 2331 undergraduates were continuing their education from the spring semester and he added that 81 former students had been read mitted after service in the armed forces new students who entered the school this semester total 545 members of the student body who are married number 591 and 577 of these are veterans only 798 undergraduates are non-vet erans non-fraternity men out number fraternity ball on nov 7 will be one of the greatest young dance bands in the country today — buddy rich and his orchestra the rich band has been in existence only a short time but has been a smash hit in such places as the strand theatre the aquarium restaurant and many other places buddy himself has had a long and successful career in the show world he started his rise to fame at the age of two when he was part of his parents vaudeville act wilson and rich it was in these vaudeville theatres that young buddy first started playing the drums when his parents would leave him in the wings of the theatre buddy would crawl into the orchestra pit climb on to the drummer's lap and beg for the drum sticks a few years later when buddy was five he was featured in the greenwich village follies of 1923 in one seene — the village toyshop — everything was built around his drum specialty at seven he toured australia honolulu and all points east he then made a tour of the country and was seen by president wilson at the keith theatre in washing ton d c the president was so impressed with the rhythmic young man that he had an audi ence with him backstage jam sessions start career buddy was in his late teens when he decided to play with a band a series of jam sessions at the crystal cafe in his home town brooklyn was the first step tow ard this ambition it was here that joe marsala first heard him and gave him a job after he left mar sala's band he joined leith ste vens the band that was noted at the time for its saturday night swing club sessions over cbs buddy's next job was with the famous bunny berrigan artie shaw heard buddy and was amazed at his ability he asked buddy to join the shaw band buddy stayed with shaw about a year and while with this band he added greatly to his list of fans about this time tommy dorsey was changing the style of his or chestra he had enlisted sy oliver to write arrangements for him and had hired musicians that could do justice to the fine rhythmic writ ings of sy — the only lacking spot was the drummer dorsey needed some one who could add the ne cessary punch to the band and it was here that he hired buddy rich buddy was associated with dorsey for six years has personality after returning to dorsey's band when discharged from two years service with the marine corps buddy started to formulate plans for a band of his own one day while filming mgm^s thrill of a romance with the dorsey band he ran into frank sinatra an old pal from pre-war dorsey days they talked over the possibili ties of buddy's band and when they met a few months later in new york sinatra told him to go ahead and start rehearsals that he would put up the beginning capi tal so the buddy rich orchestra was born buddy rich is one of the few bands leaders of the day who can not be condemned for a lack of personality though he makes no effort at being a showman he is naturally one of the greatest in the business whether he is be hind his set of drums down front optimistic pre diction saying that if the team played over their heads as he thought they could a surprise might be in the offing then billy sheridan famed wrestling coach at lehigh intro duced ralph boyer president of the muhlenberg student council who outlined to the group the non-aggression pledge between lehigh and muhlenberg the aims of the pledge are to forestall any rioting or property destruction preceding or after the lehigh muhlenberg game on nov 1 in his talk boyer brought out the fact that enthusiasm is fine in its place but when uncontrolled it can be expensive to people who cannot afford it the plans for the agreement were formulated at a joint meeting of student and faculty leaders of the two schools those attending the rally re sponded to the cheerleaders with enough enthusiasm and spirit to jar the bolts of grace hall how ever they could not make up for the students not attending class of 49 plans future events the june and february classes of 49 held a business meeting in packard auditorium wednesday afternoon oct 22 dick fuehrer 48 president of the class was of fered several suggestions for fu ture events including a beer party and possible dance to be held near valentine's day class financial report was read and estimates were made as to what funds will be needed in the future committees for various functions were formed and mem bers were urged to department of international re lations attended a meeting of the national board of directors of the foreign policy association yester day the meeting was held in new york city a recently elected ioned (?) square dance unprecedent 2070 vote in elections 5 dorm 2 town 8 fraternity named to govern by tom harris an unprecedented turn-out of 2070 students at the polls elected fifteen men to arcadia last thurs day and friday three highest men in first choice votes under the p.r preferential balloting were charles w boig 48 victor i frager 49 and john sansone 48 in that or der * the other men elected are irvin l huber 48 valerio r hunt 49 walter t senkowski 49 robert f saydah 48 walter b morton jr 49 peter s eagle son 49 cyril c baldwin 50 bruno depaoli jr 48 a james schwab 48 gilpin h jeffries 49 and herbert w christiansen 49 they were elected in that or der eight of the new arcadia mem bers are from fraternities five are dorm men and two are town resi dents town and dorm men reached their quotas earlier while seven of the eight fraternity men elected made their quota on the last transfer the quota needed for election was 127 a number obtained by di viding the number of valid bal lots 2030 by 16 and taking the quotient to the next whole num ber work tui midnight election clerks under dr ernst b schulz professor of govern ment and george howatt assis tant instructor in government la bored until midnight friday counting and transferring votes and ballots two of them ed tattershall 48 and william g wood 51 voluntarily stayed up additional hours to prepare the brown and white extra announcing winning candidates which was distributed next morning this job was fin ished by 4:00 a.m dramatic race there were many dramatic mo ments in the counting room as votes were transferred down the line and candidates ran neck and neck candidates and constituents watched excitedly as defeat or victory was written by the bal lots albert p mccauley retiring arcadia president was defeated on the 28th transfer his ballots when distributed gave fifteen votes each to irvin huber 48 and robert saydah 48 virtually winning the election for them edwin l leet 48 was the last man defeated making him run ner-up he had two votes less than herbert w christensen next two highest near-winners were richard p bodine 48 and james fullylove pays to advertise it pays to advertise was the exclamation of victor i frager 49 when notified of his election this would seem to be accurate for the late campaign was marked by a publicity rivalry heretofore unknown in lehigh elections the three highest men frager boig and sansome were the three who did perhaps the most adver tising sansone even used a home rigged sound car to trumpet out his message on tour of the cam pus posters were much in evi dence screaming at the student body from trees and telephone poles a few were even posted in likely spots outside the campus john sansone had the honor of the biggest poster — a ten by twen ty cloth banner high in a tree in the vicinity of packard laboratory honest election there was no evidence of fraud or illegality in the voting al though one case is still being in vestigated by election officials if any illegal voter should be found his name would be turned in to the discipline committee with recommendations for expulsion the clerks checked each other for accuracy and an in structor in the civil engineering department visited the undergrad uate material testing and soil and highways laboratories of brooklyn polytechnic institute and colum bia university on saturday sun day and monday oct 18 19 and 20 the trip was taken to obtain ideas for the improvement of the instruction and equipment of the undergraduate labortories at le high mr mulhausen stated that the undergraduate laboratories at brooklyn polytechnic institute are about equal to those at lehigh but he added that both schools need modernization he said that the equipment in their laboratories is guest speaker scotch clergyman founded christian workers league the guest speaker at the sec ond devotional chapel service of this academic year will be the rev john sibbald summers or ganizer and founder of the chris tian workers league in scotland his subject will be christianity and the whole man the service will be held tomorrow night oct 29 at 7:30 p.m in the packer memorial church the service is open to students faculty members and the public the noted clergyman describes the christian workers league as an organization which helps in training young boys and girls in industry to see their whole lives as dedicated to the service of god by appealing through the proper government channels the league has been able to improve the conditions in many of the workshops young people from the ages of 16 to 25 are members of the or ganization our main object may be summed up by saying that we are trying to make these young people see that in their work they are cooperating with god in his tasks of creation commented rev summers the rev mr summers who was appointed missionary of the church of scotland presbyterian has served as assistant in the cannongate parish church and as headmaster of hope waddell training institution he is a mem ber of the lona community in scotland which was built up from the ruins of an old monastic group which was influential in the chris bal lots albert p mccauley retiring arcadia president was defeated on the 28th transfer his ballots when distributed gave fifteen votes each to irvin huber 48 and robert saydah 48 virtually winning the election for them edwin l leet 48 was the last man defeated making him run ner-up he had two votes less than herbert w christensen next two highest near-winners were richard p bodine 48 and james lehigh campus to over 2,000 votes summers to be chapel guest speaker scotch clergyman founded christian workers league the guest speaker at the sec ond devotional chapel service of this academic year will be the rev john sibbald summers or ganizer and founder of the chris tian workers league in scotland his subject will be christianity and the whole man the service will be held tomorrow night oct 29 at 7:30 p.m in the packer memorial church the service is open to students faculty members and the public the noted clergyman describes the christian workers league as an organization which helps in training young boys and girls in industry to see their whole lives as dedicated to the service of god by appealing through the proper government channels the league has been able to improve the
