vol xxvii no 10 varsity defeats carnegie tech roosevelt lauded at all colleges r a mcconell addresses y 289 men enroll in r o t c officers of combined musical clubs elected maryland-lehigh club elects officers twenty-five marylanders present at second meeting of club conditions before close of world war compared with those of today plans for mandolin quartette and vocal quartette brown and white eleven comes back from pittsburgh with clean slate ; score 16=0 lehigh has one of largest en rollments in country inspec tor compliments showing prof stewart honors the ex president in address at chapel monday morning exemplary life sees pitt play after tech game lehigh squad sees pitt defeat georgia tech 16-6 roosevelt memorial association requests all colleges to honor the american last monday the second meeting of the le high-maryland club took place friday night at the previous meeting a committee was appointed to draw up a new constitution and friday evening it was submitted and accepted the revival of this society is due in a large degree to the efforts of mr w f quast of the mechanical engineering de partment the second meeting was attended by about 25 sons of mary land a much larger turn-out than at the first gathering president a w glaser 22 vice-president a j sakiewich 21 ; secretary m m esterson 21 ; a-eas urfc h . t l 21 it is the intent of the members to make the club a vital factor in the life of the college in all branches of activity as well as to provide social enjoyment the meeting was adjourned after the following officers were elected playing their first game on a foreign gridiron the brown and white eleven came through with flying colors when they defeated carnegie tech at pittsburgh last saturday the score 16-0 is hard ly an indication of the relative merits of the two teams lehigh twice had the ball within a yard of the goal line and only by stub born resistance did the tech war riors prevent touchdowns chapel music at a meeting of the combined musical clubs saturday afternoon plans for the coming season were discussed among other things the members are contemplating the or ganization of a mandolin quartette and also a vocal quartette in con junction with the larger societies but no definite arrangements will be made until a number of concerts have been booked negotiations are being made for a few local concerts as well as trips to various cities one of these con certs will probably be held in con junction wiht a university dance a number of pieces were suggested by the members which might serve as some of the repertoire of popular music and at the close of th meet ing the necessary dues were col lected the newly elected officers of the combined clubs are : r a wilbur 20 president ; h k brady 20 ; vice-president e m allen 20 secretary ; k m dowties~"2rpriatf ager r a wilbur 20 leader of mandolin club the leader of the glee club will be selected by prof t e shields university organist cross country men selected monday — lecture by prof j l stewart on roosevelt tuesday — | romanza in c minor matthews wednesday — allegro fulco mendelssohn thursday — largo handel friday — san ann fuge bach the cross country team which will represent lehigh in the meet with rutgers this coming saturday will be composed of the following men 1 carr 2 merkle 3 fancher 4 boardman 5 laugh ton 6 brugman 7 markley the trial meet was held on the 25th the men finishing in the above order the time made by these men was better than the best time made previous to this tryout circuit breakers president drinker writes to student-body the circuit breakers held their first meeting of the year last week and elected the following men to membership : l n shirk j e schmink r g ried a j turner m w bachert e e concilio e l tinker and i kieth a banquet will be held on wednesday evening of this week at the bethle hem girls club vital subject at last college lecture the r o t c at lehigh is making wonderful progress and it is almost certain that the lehigh unit will be considered as one of the distinguished groups and that lehigh will be classed as a dis tinguished college ' ' the unit had an enrollment of over 289 men when the period for enlistment close|i last saturday noon this is about 30 of the number of men in the university which is prac tically the largest enrollment in proportion to the number of stu dents of the r 0 t c units in any college or university in the country where the r 0 t c is purely voluntary this enrollment includes seven seniors and about twenty-five juniors if there is anyone who still desires to join the unit who has been prevented from enlisting temporarily for any good if he reports immediately to lieut colonel lang at his office in packer hall a letter has been received from the district inspector of the states of pennsylvania maryland and delaware complimenting lehigh university and doctor drinker on the excellent spirit shown here by the large enrollment in the r o t c under the direction of lieut colonel lang drill is held every wednesday afternoon from three to four last wednesday the unit was divided into three com panies of about 80 men each lieut.-colonel lang is now con sidering forming one battalion of four companies each company con sisting of about 73 men the idea being that instead of training nine officers and fifteen sergeants for three companies each company having three officers and five sergeants by using four companies he will be able to train 12 officers and 20 sergeants which will make an increase of 33 1/3 in the num ber of men who can hold officers positions besides this there will be a major adjutant and battalion sergeant major making a total of 14 officers and 21 non-commission ed officers trip to philadelphia i wish to express to the student body of lehigh my pride and im mense satisfaction at their loyal and patriotic action in enrolling so large a number in our unit of the reserve officers training corps following our steady record dur ing the past six years of active efficient support of the war de partment in the matter of pre paredness it is highly fitting that we should give emphatic expres sion toy our desire and intention to support the government in this movement to train and render fit for national service if needed our college-bred young men and to me as a lehigh alumnus this action of our student body gives promise and certainty that our alumni of the future will be worthy followers of the men who have served our country so readily and so effective ly in the great crisis now passed henry s drinker president the members of the varsity squftd who were unable to accom pany the team to pittsburgh on account of injuries received during the season journeyed to philadel phia on saturday and witnessed the perm-lafayette game an absorbing talk by mr ray mond a mcconell on ' ' the great er victory was the feature of sunday evening's regular y m c a meeting mr mcconell com pared conditions before the close of the world war with those of the present day he stated that a year and a half ago we of the united states entertained many hopes we hoped for a speedy and lasting peace we hoped that the trying industrial and social conditions of the time would find their solution as soon as peace was attained the thinkers of the country were pray ing that with peace would come a great awakening to idealism and a seeking for something other than the almighty dollar throughout the nation they trusted that the men returning from the front having iindergone tremendous tests of t.^rslli ssa-fsjii tyrnjilrl tpioo flip country to a higher national life mr mcconell then compared these hopes with the actualities of the present time now we have a so-called peace but it is not the peace we hoped for there is still strife among nations all over the world with russia as a good ex ample we looked f ojward to a great international peace and an insurance against all future wars but so far we have had neither there is a league of nations idea but to many it is unsatisfactory again there is no industrial peace the cost of living is higher than ever before there are strikes on every hand and production is at its minimum moreover the ex soldiers of whom we expected great moral and spiritual uplift came back to civilian life and fell into the same ruts which they had left when called upon to fight the majority of them were neither bet ter nor worse as a result of their experiences these facts prove that to all outward appearances our hopes were in vain but mr mcconell showed that their still is hope he claimed that the mere fact that people are dis satisfied with these conditions in dicates that a higher civilization is at hand the future is an untrod den path and the people of today are the ones who will have to walk it and the only way to walk this path is to have faith in it faith mr mcconell declared is the con viction of things not seen there are no visible symptons of a higher life but men should have faith in it and some day this greater ex istence will become a reality during the meeting a num ber of baritone solos were delivered by mr a v laub he has un usual ability and was greatly ap preciated by those present college dance after pitt game saturday the game which was played on the tech field was called at 1:30 to afford the spectators a chance to see the pitt-georgia tech game played^on forbes field which be gan at 3 focntelock lehigh earned a reputation for steam roller tactics by the way its backs plowed through the tech line almost at will wysocki featured in these gains through the line his plunging being the best of any lehigh back this year savaria who played his first game this year showed his usual line plunging ability and was second only to wysocki in the matter of yards gained through the line savaria's injury which he sustain ed early in the year was giving him trouble and he was retired at the end of the first quarter lehigh s initial touchdown came in the second quarter about two minutes after play had begun the whole backfield playing in turn carried the ball to tech's 8-yard line and wysocki took it over for the score herrington failed to kick the goal the other touchdown which was in the third period was the result of a series of forward passes tech had the ball on their own 20-yard line and failing to gain kicked the kick was hurried and the pigskin travelled barely 20 yards on le high s first play a forward pass was tried wilson was about to catch the ball when he was interfered with and the officials allowed the gain of 20 yards another pass to the same end netted 15 more yards and the ball was within | a yard of the goal the tech defense stif fened and lehigh failed to score but was within striking distance again when another hurried punt by the tech fullback was caught by liston and returned 15 yards to the 12-yard line a series of line bucks failed and also a drop kick on the fourth down which was blocked the ball was recovered by lehigh however making it first down on the 8-yard line wilson caught a forward pass for a touch down on the next play booth kicked the goal continued on third page the final score came in the last quarter when lehigh intercepted a tech forward pass and after an unsuccessful attack on the tech scrubs win also pursuant to the request of the roosevelt memorial association that the chapel exercises at the colleges and universities of the country on october 2,7 th be de voted to the memory of the late theodore roosevelt an address was made at our chapel exercises yesterday by professor stewart who was a personal friend of col roosevelt and who was associated with him in public work professor stewart spoke as fol lov tn ? ■""" 7r^ay the anniversary of the „„•',' , y theodore roosevelt the university asks that you think for a few moments of the movement to create a national memorial to him this is no place for eulogy they who deserve eulogy do not need it and they who deserve it not are di minished by it the dead at least can bar the truth and have a right to that highest service of human speech we are not called upon here to ftefine roosevelt's pla^e among the memorable of mankind a great man is made up of quali ties that meet or make great oc casions we may surely say of him that the great qualities were there and were always adequate to the need he stood the test by the su preme trial of creative statesman ship and we have good reason for our faith for this is certainly true of him that a life more strenu ous a life of more constantly heightening tendency of fulfilment of more salutary and invigorating example has not been lived in a country that is rich in instances of such roosevelt's career is his me morial ! but it is almost instinctive to desire to translate into stone or bronze — into somte tangible form the idea of the character of the president who embodied as no other american in our history those conceptions of equality of rights and of obligations of liberty under the law and of a people united not by ties of race or tra dition but by the bond of faith in a great idea that was the burden of the roosevelt message to our generation in his appeal to young men he was urged by his hatred of the slothful of the mawkish and of the unmanly he would be among the first to denounce the perpetuation of his policies into a dogmas for his intellectual equip ment warned him against the letter that killeth seeking the experi ence of all sorts and conditions of men he soon learned that is best blood that hath most iron in it to edge resolve with pouring without stint for what makes manhood dear continued on fourth page one of the regular university lectures was given friday morn ing at the grand opera house it consisted of the showing of a two reel moving picture produced under the auspices of the state board of health in its campaign against venerial diseases the picture was accompanied by ex planations by dr w l estes the picture dealt with the symp tons and causes of the various venerial diseases and depicted very frankly the pain and suffering of those so afflicted the use of the opera house for this lecture was made possible through the courtesy of mr zboy ovsky lessee of the theatre be sides the students there were many physicians and members of the clergy of bethlehem present to witness this remarkable film the scrubs journeyed to penns burg on saturday afternoon and defeated the perkiomen prep boys by a score of 13-0 the second university dance of the season will be held on saturday evening november 1 in drown hall music will be furnished by lanin's orchestra of five pieces from philadelphia brown and white ' price five cents bethlehem pa tuesday october 28 1919 lehigh 146 — opponents o attend the pitt smoker and keep that goal line clean ]| attend that smoker next friday
