spin the graduation-speaker wheel round and round she goes where she stops nobody knows or do they dozens of names have been thrown around about who will have the honor to address the senior class on june 4 yet no one has officially been named according to senior class president rob kossar the speaker selection process began last april when the class of 89 was polled for their choices a list of the top 20 was compiled and presented to lehigh president peter likins and the board of trustees kossar said the board decides who they want to try to get usually one of the top choices of the seniors some prospective speakers take longer than others to respond kossar said so it can be a long process kossar added that the board and likins are looking out for the best interest of the university and aim to avoid having a speaker students or faculty will be opposed to likins takes the responsibility of obtaining a speaker on himself and has been working very hard recently to secure a prominent personality kossar said the only compensation a speaker receives is an honorary deg ree-he or she does not collect a fee he said dispelling the rumor that ronald reagan's price was too high i cannot discuss the stage we are i n now but we do not have a speaker yet at least i don't know about one kossar said possibilities are endless however just about everyone from asimov isaac the pulitzer prize winner to zubrow ed the former u penn foot ball coach have been mentioned kossar would not rule anyone out but said the university probably would have benefitted a great deal from having a woman speaker this year brown and white given five marks of distinction the associated collegiate press recently awarded the brown and white all american status with five out of five marks of distinction for the fall semester the associated collegiate press has been evaluating student publications for more than 60 years providing student journalists with an outside opinion of their work and how to improve it in the five scoring sections of coverage and content writing and editing opinion content design and photogra phy and art and graphics the brown and white received marks of excellent and superior for several of the scoring subcategories the marks of distinction are awarded to publications exhibiting lively appealing imaginative creative work showing special personality according to the associated collegiate press newspaper guidebook the newspaper was awarded bonus points in several sections such as the editorial cartoons sports coverage and scope of sources used extra points were also awarded for the amount of student work which goes into the production of the newspaper senior eric rothenberg editor-in-chief of the brown and white for the fall semester said our success can be directly attributed to the hard work and dedication of all the students who spend countless hours of their personal time to put out the paper each week baw photo by oeißofle vujevch members of the staff of ihe brown and white labor over an issue the paper attained all-americar status which is the highest award given by the associated collegiate press aids awareness urged by amy silver day dedicated to educate lu community brown and while news writer lehigh will hold its first aids awareness day on thursday com plete with lecturer health care profes sionals and written information the progressive student alliance psa and the dean of students office have put together a program to educate the lehigh community terry couner an eloquent lecturer who is dying of aids will speak in whitaker laboratory auditorium at 4:15 p.m about his experiences with the disease the psa will set up tables in the university center from 10 a.m to 2 p.m with information supplied by the aids task force of the lehigh valley and the local chapter of plan ned parenthood kathy janus r.n from the health center will also sit at this table and answer questions everything will be very straight forward we thought this would be a good way to get people thinking about the issues and to make information available said psa co-chairwoman carol vanderkarr 89 the psa submitted a proposal to the dean of students office in october about presenting an aids educational program at lehigh and this program is the result of that plan 7 think it will be very good for lehigh to confront the mis conceptions about aids " kara kudzma psa member it took a long time to happen they dean of students office deliberated for a long time because some of the material can be considered controver sial and their liability is involved but as long as it's happening i think it will be very good for lehigh to confront the misconceptions about aids said psa member kara kudzma 90 what's inside national science
