president martin d whitaker announced on oct 8 that charles a seidle of new york city new york had been named associate dean of students at lehigh uni versity mr seidel will join the staff jan 1 1948 in order to meet the demands of a record enrollment of 2955 un dergraduates reorganization of | several administrative posts was announced by dr whitaker the posts of dean of students and di rector of admissions will be held by dr wray h congdon the pest of associate dean of students will go to john d leith who was assistant dean of undergraduates last year bryon c hayes will be associate director of admissions and paul j frantz and clarence b campbell will continue as assis tant directors of admissions mr seidle is a native of la grange illinois and received his undergraduate training at the uni versity of pittsburgh his previous experience includes teaching as signments at lingnan university canton china and at teachers college of columbia university from id 38 to 1941 mr seidel served as assistant director of ad missions at lehigh university during world war 11 he was with the eight army headquar ters in japan and was responsible for setting up schools for children of american military personnel stationed in japan mr seidel is now completing his graduate studies for a doctor ate degree at columbia univer sity new health service building is what the doctor ordered by frederick l villa — photo george scheller lehiffh autograph hounds were quick to seek mr spaulding after his violin concert last friday dorm smoker scheduled a sports movie football highlights of 1946 will be featured at an all dorm smoker at 7:30 p.m wednesday in grace hall this smoker will be the first all dorm event of the semester also on the program for the evening will be the presentation and discussion of complaints such as the cafeteria situation and the introduction of candi dates for arcadia the student governing body all dorm men are invited to the affair which is under the direction of bill d'olier 47 curtis releases enrollment figures tenative statistics covering the 1947 fall semester enrollment have been released by george b curtis university registrar a total of 3,408 students are at tending lehigh this fall 2957 un dergraduates 328 graduate stu dents and 123 in adult education of the undergraduates 814 are non-veterans or veterans who are not making use of the benefits of the g.i bill and 2143 are veterans using the benefits of the g.i bill one hundred seventy-six of the adults are non-veterans or veter ans not using the g.i bill 152 of the graduates and 17 of the adult education students are veterans using the g.i bill complete statistics will be re leased as soon as they are com piled dramatic club lays plans for productions m&c to stage r u r cyrano de bergerac gilbert & sullivan musical mustard and cheese lehigh dramatic club set its plans for the coming two semesters in its first business meeting held recent ly in packard lab elections were held to fill the vacancy in the of fice of treasurer created when murray glassberg left school james gentles 48 who had held the post of secretary was elected treasurer and henry salm 48 was elected the new secretary the three plays announced for production by the club are r u r by karel capek rostand's cyrano de bergerac and a gil bert and sullivan operetta which will be selected by mustard and cheese and the moravian music staif r u r is slated for pre sentation december 5 and 6 at broughal junior high school cyrano will be staged some time in march and the musical will be offered either in april or early may tryouts announced howard kucher president of the organization announced to the members that tryouts for the fall production will be held tuesday wednesday and thursday oct 14 15 and 16 in room 314 christ mas-saucon hall from 4 to 5:30 p.m members of mustard and cheese and all other men on cam pus are eligible to attend while auditions for the other productions will not be held until some later date mr davis faculty adviser of the club has urged that all men interested in acting attend the first tryout session so that he can get some idea of the acting mater ial on campus this year all wo men working on campus from the dames club moravian college for women are also invited to at tend final casting for r u r will take place on october 16 from among those who have been suc cessful in the first and second tryouts there are 40 male parts and 3 female parts open for this first play freshman activities outlined following the meeting the freshmen interested in dramatics atended a session at which they were introduced to the various activities and functions of the club this was accomplished by having the leaders of each de partment talk to the new boys about the work in the paper b&w sponsors contest to select most typical famil questionnaires must be in by friday oct 21 mr and mrs lehigh 1947-48 the typical lehigh university cou ple will be announced in the houseparty issue of the brown and white on nov 7 during the next few weeks the brown and white will sponsor the selection of a couple which most nearly typifies the average of the married students families at le high according to richard m f davis 48 promotion manager of the semi-weekly newspaper ques tionnaires have been sent to every tenth married student requesting certain information from this data averages will be computed and announced in an early edition of the brown and white all cou ples interested will then submit the same information on themselves and from these entrants the cou ple which overall most nearly ap proaches the average will be cho sen as mr and mrs lehigh 1947-48 576 married students registered this semester in addition to having its largest enrollment le high has the greatest number of married students in its history arcadia files reveal that a total of 576 married students are regis tered with this fact in view sev eral members of the b&w staff considered it of interest to deter mine some statistics concerning the married population and then select the most typical because of budget limitations it was decided to send questionnaires to only ran dom selected students davis stated that naturally any married student who desires to help in the poll to determine the averages on which the contest will be based may submit a ques tionnaire which may be secured in the brown and white office the completed questionnaires must ar rive at the office by friday oct 17 to be used in the computa tions after the averages are an nounced probably on oct 21 those desiring to enter the contest may do so by submitting answers to the same questions as were asked to detemine the averages this maybe done either by copy ing the questions from the oct 21 issue of the b&w and inserting their own answers or by filling out a questionnaire secured from the b&w office no entries will be accepted after oct 31 elections for new arcadia to be held petitions are filed by many candidates anticipating election the first arcadia to serve under the newly-adopted constitution will be chosen on thursday and friday of next week oct 23 and 24 all candidates will be nomin ated by petition these petitions must be returned to the arcadia office by 5:00 p.m today so far 33 candidates have filed petitions there are 15 positions on arcadia to be filled lively cam paigning is anticipated and cam pus-wide interest is likely to be stirred before the contest is over already petition circulating and some electioneering have aroused considerable attention this election will be the first to be conducted by p r on the le high campus p r is the common appelation for the hare system of proportional representation un der p r representatives to ar cadia will be chosen by direct pop ular elections the hare system of p r should not be confused with the list system of p r that is used in some european countries all regularly matriculated un dergraduates will be eligible to vote secret ballots will be fur nished polling will take place from 9:00 a.m to 4:30 p.m at locations in packard laboratory christmas-saucon hall the li brary and drown hall before voting each student will be re quired to verify his identity and register his name pr explanation friday because of many requests that an explanation of pr be published in the brown and white a description of the sys tem as it will operate under the new constitution will appear on page two on friday oct 16 is a darkroom for developing and a storage closet for developer film and other necessary materials for darkroom work down the hall from the x-ray department at the western end of the building is the new and mod ern physiotherapy room this unit oi the health service is in charge of mr james p mathews the other new member of the staff who was hired to replace billy burkhart who had just retired billy left the health service last year for a well deserved break af ter administering to the medical needs of an uncountable number of lehigh athletes in addition to his regular duties billy served as an unofficial historian of various events that occurred on the cam pus and often regaled his boys with some of the humorous remin iscences which made up his large and varied reportoire hope for new dispensary much of the physiotherapy equipment is new and modern it consists of infra-red and ultra violet lamps as well as diathermy machines for galvanic treatments one laudable improvement is the installation of a record room with enough space for the files containing information on treat ments and the health records of all students this new system is designed to make work easier for mrs ryan staff secretary who tends to all the non-technical ad ministrative details necessary to keep the health service function ing efficiently the primary mission of the university health service accord ing to dr keck is to function as an ambulatory dispensary it is not at present an infirmary or surgery as they would require a larger and more expensive permanent building however plans are on file in the buildings and grounds office for a larger and more elab orate permanent building which will eventually be built on the campus it is to be hoped that this building will soon be going up so that the present high standards of efficiency and service rendered to lehigh students can be raised to an even higher level and that the hard working deserving staff will have the finest equipment with which to work society camps at delaware on bivou the lehigh chapter of pershing rifles national rotc society held its second annual fall bivouac sat urday oct 11 at shawnee on the delaware the bivouac was at tended by 25 cadets and faculty members of the lehigh rotc de partment including col luckett professor of military science capt mclanachan adjutant and faculty adviser to pershing rifles and m-sgt boris clarence g knight commissioned 2nd lt in the orc at fort meade rotc summer camp accompanied the society pledges of the society walked eight miles to and from the bi vouac area and were required to stand guard duty on half-hour shifts food for the expedition was prepared on an army field stove transported with the unit plans for pershing rifles which has about 30 members at lehigh include a formal initiation ban quet for pledges on friday oct 17 the society will also send rep resentatives to pershing rifles regimental headquarters on oct 24 for a weekend convention the society's members are distin guished by the blue and white f ourragere worn on the left steeve of the uniform blouse the neiv health service many students in their wander ings around the campus have at one time or another noticed a low white building opposite the phys ics department all lehigh stu dents sooner or later come to this building this is the university health service directed by genial hearty dr carl o keck who be gan working for the health cer vice after the tragic death of dr peters and who succeeded dr bull as its director the cheerful well-lighted and spacious new building will prove a welcome change to students familiar with the former gloomy quarters i n christmas - saucon hall one of the best medications for student patients is cheerful surroundings to go to for treat ment this building formerly a hospital wing at fort washington maryland promises to be all of that on entering the building the visitor finds himself in a pleasant roomy lounge with comfortable seats to relax upon while waiting for treatment directly opposite the entrance is the main treat ment room presided over by brisk efficient mrs agocs capably as sisted by mrs hilda ament one of the two new staff members this room is equipped with suf ficient new furniture instruments and enough medical supplies to treat almost any type of minor injury to the left of the main dispen sary a door leads to the laboratory where complete blood counts rou tine uninalyses and wasserman blood samples may be drawn modern x-ray and physiotherapy the x-ray section across the hall from the clinic laboratory has a bucky table for spinal and pel vic x-rays this table an intri cate and valuable piece of equip ment cost the university 800 the room is also equipped with a more standard x-ray machine for the more common type of x-ray work adjoining this section there concert cues fouled by lu audience spaulding pardons the first audience of his current continental tour fifty million frenchmen can't be wrong but approximately 500 lehigh men and their guests were when albert spaulding america's violinist played in grace hall friday night after applauding the first movement of his opening sel ection nearly half of the audience believing mr spaulding had com pleted the first part of his concert left their seats for intermission af ter his second number mr spaulding excused the er ror of his listeners saying that it was the first concert of the season for both himself and them he then continued his concert reach ing its conclusion without further mishap audience complimented after the performance mr spaulding said of his audience they have been one of the most quiet and attentive groups i have ever played to quiet when they should be and noisy when they should be he demonstrated the importance a performer attaches to applause when he added to the previous statement if they the audience weren't noisy at the proper times i would be heartbroken in the course of his present continental tour mr spaulding is scheduled to make personal ap pearances in colleges and univer sities throughout the country in addition to performances with leading orchestras and on radio shows asked whether he would rather play for small college groups large concert hall audi ences or the millions of radio lis teners mr spaulding replied simply i will play for anybody who will listen to me if the peo ple won't pay to hear me then i'll bribe them to listen mr spaulding last appeared on ski club's first fall meet the ski club will hold its first | meeting of the fall semester at j 7:30 p.m wednesday oct 15 in room 301 of williams hall the meeting is primarily for the pur pose of getting partake in treatment they could not have obtained prior to this f ail lu art alliance to show paintings for the eleventh consecutive year the lehigh art alliance will present the annual fall exhibi tion of paintings in the university are gallery opening sunday after noon the paintings will be on dis play through november 9th this year an art jury selected about 50 canvases for display from the 85 submitted miss alice mus selman an architect of bethle hem prof angelo de francesco of the state teachers college at kutztown and mr george papa shvily of richlandtown author of anything can happen served on this group in october 1936 the lehigh art alliance sponsored its first exhi bition here during the preceding three years many of the artists had painted for displays under the name of artists of lehigh val ley prof garth a howland head of the fine arts department has an nounced that the exhibition will be open to the public on sundays wednesdays thursdays and fri days from 3 to 5 p.m this will be the second exhibit of the year in the art gallery the paintings of joe jones were dis played earlier this semester the student concert-lecture sche dule in 1942 he stated that he had been very happy each time he had been here before and this time proved no disappointment the program for the evening was composed of three compara tively heavy selections preceding intermission and five lighter ones following it the first part includ ed two numbers shubert's duo op 162 for violin and brahms sonata in d minor op 108 for violin and piano poems by chaus son constituted part two and the program was concluded with five more selections andante from the concerto by barber castles in spain and wind in the pines both by spaulding cortege by lili boulanger and la campanella by paganini and spaulding mr spaulding was accompanied by anthony kooiker a very ca pable pianist sand the violinist the concert inaugurated the stu dent concert-lecture series for the fall semester following mr spaulding's appearance the series will feature henry l scott comic pianist a program of spanish dan cers two performances of the mo zart opera cosi tan tutte and a fifth program as yet unsched uled were when albert spaulding america's violinist played in grace hall friday night after applauding the first movement of his opening sel ection nearly half of the audience believing mr spaulding had com pleted the first part of his concert left their seats for intermission af ter his second number mr spaulding excused the er ror of his listeners saying that it was the first concert of the season for both himself and them he then continued his concert reach ing its conclusion without further mishap audience complimented after the performance mr spaulding said of his audience they have been one of the most quiet and attentive groups i have ever played to quiet when they should be and noisy when they should be he demonstrated the importance a performer attaches to applause when he added to the previous statement if they the audience weren't noisy at the proper times i would be heartbroken in the course of his present continental tour mr spaulding is scheduled to make personal ap pearances in colleges and univer sities throughout the country in addition to performances with leading orchestras and on radio shows asked whether he would rather play for small college groups large concert hall audi ences or the millions of radio lis teners mr spaulding replied simply i will play for anybody who will listen to me if the peo ple won't pay to hear me then i'll bribe them to listen about 50 canvases for display from the 85 submitted miss alice mus selman an architect of bethle hem prof angelo de francesco of the state teachers college at kutztown and mr george papa shvily of richlandtown author of anything can happen served on this group in october 1936 the lehigh art alliance sponsored its first exhi bition here during the preceding three years many of the artists had painted for displays under the name of artists of lehigh val ley prof garth a howland head of the fine arts department has an nounced that the exhibition will be open to the public on sundays wednesdays thursdays and fri days from 3 to 5 p.m this will be the second exhibit of the year in the art gallery the paintings of joe jones were dis played earlier this semester the student concert-lecture sche dule in 1942 he stated that he had been very happy each time he had been here before and this time proved no disappointment the program for the evening was composed of three compara tively heavy selections preceding intermission and five lighter ones following it the first part includ ed two numbers shubert's duo op 162 for violin and brahms sonata in d minor op 108 for violin and piano poems by chaus son constituted part two and the program was concluded with five more selections andante from the concerto by barber castles in spain and wind in the pines both by spaulding cortege by lili boulanger and la campanella by paganini and spaulding mr spaulding was accompanied by anthony kooiker a very ca pable pianist sand the violinist the concert inaugurated the stu dent concert-lecture series for the fall semester following mr spaulding's appearance the series will feature henry l scott comic pianist a program of spanish dan cers two performances of the mo zart opera cosi tan tutte and a fifth program as yet unsched uled orc plans orientations members of the officers re serve corps may attend meetings held the first thursday of every month in packard lab according to lt george hackett member of the county officers reserve corps officers may attend these orien tation courses and have credit for warded to their home units or may enroll in the unit
