world peace and unity there are two sides tc the in ternational situation explained dr koo tue problem side and the movement side we see the international situation too much from the problem side it looks too complicated and hopeless but there is another the movement side a movement toward coopera tion and organization history shows the movement angle throughout the 19th century when the modern nations partic ularly the european nations were growing they were nurtured on two great principles of national growth patriotism and sovereignty of the state this ultra-nationalism regards the state as an end in it self not as a passing phase in the trend toward world unity that we must accomplish if we are to have world peace two attempts made in the first half of the 20th century i there have been two great world wars but there have also been two attempts by the nations of the world to achieve world unity and peace there has been a steady movement in one direction by peace forces the more optimis tic of whom already see a world government gi owing out of the united nations peace not in our time asked if he thought the united nations the answer to world unity dr koo stated that if nations are willing to work together the char ter contains all the necessities for a world organization but he added the charter cannot compel the nations to work together when questioned as to when he expected the realization of world peace he replied certainly not in my lifetime if the united nations meets with moderate success we will be doing well it will take many decades to educate the peo white boston bull terrier buster ac cording to the story buster had been in a former life mark an tony and cleopatra appears in her reincarnated form as a large yel low alley cat although the cat is fictional buster is very real in deed buster's role mr norwood selected antony for buster's former self because as he says buster and the fa mous roman have a thing or two in common as i've pointed been sent to 24 colleges and universities it is hoped that many intercollegiate debates will be held during the semester the topic of a world federation will be discussed at the next meet ing which will be held at 7:00 p.m in room 314 christmas-saucon hall monday oct 13 demolay to meet tuesday in drown the demolay club which has been inactive for over two years will hold a reorganization meeting on tuesday oct 14 at 4:10 in the lounge on the upper floor of drown hall all men who are or who have ever been members of the order of demolay are urged to attend this meeting the junior masons was organ ized in 1938 for the purpose of bringing together brother de molays who were away from their mother chapters the club has numbered among its members men from all over the world through cooperation with the local wilbur chapter the club was very active socially before the war the club maintained a date bureau that ar ranged dates between lehigh men and the girls in the various wo men's colleges and nurse's schools the following interim officers are governing during reorganization dick staley president dave alexy vice-president and ed tattershall secretary - treasurer the club's adviser is dr carl o keck in the valley teal states function of guidance unit outlines five steps which will help student make vocation selection the guidance center in christ mas-saucon hall under the direc tion of mr everett teal offers the lehigh student advice and help in all problems pertinent to his choice of vocation and the training it re quires the center believes that each student should follow these five steps when choosing his life work 1 he should have a knowledge of the broad fields of occupation 2 he should gain specific knowledge of the fields that he feels he would like to enter 3 he should learn the training requirements of these jobs 4 he should try to discover his own aptitudes 5 he should then compare his aptitudes with the job require ments to help the lehigh student over these hurdles mr teal his coun sellors frank palevicz fred arm strong and harry hahn as well as mrs charles jensen the cen ter's psychometrician are avail able to give their assistance according to the director an in dividual may have the aptitudes and interest demanded of a par ticular job but he may also have personal problems that must be considered when he is making his choice services are free the counseling services are free of charge to veterans and non veterans at lehigh said director teal adding testing is a minor part of counseling a vital part but just a means to an end the guidance center has infor mation about probable salaries and employment on over 10,000 differ ent occupations this information is used to help the new student choose and prepare for the work he plans to follow at the present time about 150 tests are given each week at the center there are 80 different tests that range from dexterity tests to those of advanced college cal ibre however occupational guidance is not the only counsel given by the center the director wants stu dents to feel free to bring all their problems to the center for advice and solution mr harry hahn a arcadia group changes recommended for discipline committee and students defense a charity drive for 2500 to be launched monday oct 13 was ratified during a two hour meeting of arcadia in drown kail last wednesday night in the next to last meeting of the present mem bers recommendations for a re organization of the disciplinary committee and for aid for the student's defense who is brought before the disciplinary committee were also submitted the drive for 2500 as a wel fare and charity fund will official ly be launched monday oct 12 the presidents of every living group were called together last thursday oct 9 and each pres ident will be responsible for col lecting donations from the mem bers cf the living groups he be longs to the members of arcadia were reluctant to set a per capita quota but would rather have it that each student pay what he felt he could afford the total amount that is re ceived will be distributed by the following percentages fifteen per cent for national charitable organ izations which will include the tuberculosis and health society the american red cross the in fantile paralysis fund the ameri can cancer society and the world student fund ; twenty per cent for the bethlehem community chest and five per cent as an emergency reserve fund to be distributed to any other charities that come up that are deemed worthy of the contribution by arcadia reorganization of discipline com the members of the student government are formally recom mending that the faculty commit tee and the board of trustees change the organization for the discipline committee the new plan would have the committee composed of two faculty members two students and dean congdon whereas the committee now stand ing has three members of the fac ulty one student a representa tive of arcadia and dean cong don another recommendation con cerning the disciplinary committee was submitted by arcadia would give the student who is brought before the committee a council of a faculty member and all rec ords and evidence against the stu dent be open for investigation arcadia passed the recommen dation that the flying club be allowed to disorganize if no reme dies can the guidance center in christ mas-saucon hall under the direc tion of mr everett teal offers the lehigh student advice and help in all problems pertinent to his choice of vocation and the training it re quires the center believes that each student should follow these five steps when choosing his life work 1 he should have a knowledge of the broad fields of occupation 2 he should gain specific knowledge of the fields that he feels he would like to enter 3 he should learn the training requirements of these jobs 4 he should try to discover his own aptitudes 5 he should then compare his aptitudes with the job require ments to help the lehigh student over these hurdles mr teal his coun sellors frank palevicz fred arm strong and harry hahn as well as mrs charles jensen the cen ter's psychometrician are avail able to give their assistance according to the director an in dividual may have the aptitudes and interest demanded of a par ticular job but he may also have personal problems that must be considered when he is making his choice services are free the counseling services are free of charge to veterans and non veterans at lehigh said director teal adding testing is a minor part of counseling a vital part but just a means to an end the guidance center has infor mation about probable salaries and employment on over 10,000 differ ent occupations this information is used to help the new student choose and prepare for the work he plans to follow at the present time about 150 tests are given each week at the center there are 80 different tests that range from dexterity tests to those of advanced college cal ibre however occupational guidance is not the only counsel given by the center the director wants stu dents to feel free to bring all their problems to the center for advice and solution mr harry hahn a member of the counseling staff at the lehigh guidance center interviews many students in a day's work this service is free of charge and is given to during a two hour meeting of arcadia in drown kail last wednesday night in the next to last meeting of the present mem bers recommendations for a re organization of the disciplinary committee and for aid for the student's defense who is brought before the disciplinary committee were also submitted the drive for 2500 as a wel fare and charity fund will official ly be launched monday oct 12 the presidents of every living group were called together last thursday oct 9 and each pres ident will be responsible for col lecting donations from the mem bers cf the living groups he be longs to the members of arcadia were reluctant to set a per capita quota but would rather have it that each student pay what he felt he could afford the total amount that is re ceived will be distributed by the following percentages fifteen per cent for national charitable organ izations which will include the tuberculosis and health society the american red cross the in fantile paralysis fund the ameri can cancer society and the world student fund ; twenty per cent for the bethlehem community chest and five per cent as an emergency reserve fund to be distributed to any other charities that come up that are deemed worthy of the contribution by arcadia reorganization of discipline com the members of the student government are formally recom mending that the faculty commit tee and the board of trustees change the organization for the discipline committee the new plan would have the committee composed of two faculty members two students and dean congdon whereas the committee now stand ing has three members of the fac ulty one student a representa tive of arcadia and dean cong don another recommendation con cerning the disciplinary committee was submitted by arcadia would give the student who is brought before the committee a council of a faculty member and all rec ords and evidence against the stu dent be open for investigation arcadia passed the recommen dation that the flying club be allowed to disorganize if no reme dies can be found for its present financial conditions due to a sud den rapid decrease in member ship and the great fall in value of the aircraft that the club pos sesses the flying club is having a difficult time meeting its finan cial obligations spalding opens concert series with violin recital tonight brown and white three future events announced wide variety of musical talent scheduled the appearance of guest artist albert spaulding tonight oct 10 in eugene gifford grace hall at 8:15 will inaugurate the student concert-lecture series for the fall
