the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol.loo n0.21 friday december 2 1988 215 758-4181 taylor stadium demolition under way by eric rothenberg brown and while editor in chief the demolition of lehigh university's taylor stadium the home of lehigh sporting events since 1914 and third oldest collegiate stadium in the country began tuesday and is scheduled to take about three months according to a rep resentative of alvin h butz inc the contractor who is managing the project using primarily hydraulic hammers mounted onto back hoes joseph b fay and co of pittsburgh pa the firm sub contracted by butz to tear down the sta dium is razing the concrete structure which has stood proudly on the corner of east packer avenue and taylor street for more than 74 years john szalachowski of the allentown pa.-based butz said no explosives will be used in the destruction initially unsure of the method in which the stadium would be taken apart he recently ruled out the possibilityof using wreckingballs for some of the stadiums sections we will determine what the easiest way is once we get started hesaid.pointingou that he does not expect the subcontractor will use anything but hydraulic hammers financing for the demolition has been se cured by the university and approved by tht board of trustees accord ing to anthony corallo assistant vice presiden for facilities services and campus planning but he would not release the cos of demolition the stadium which covers approximately six acres according t corallo is being razed u make room fora new col lege of business and eco nomics building a per forming arts center and a parking lot he said the cost of removing the old ftadium preparing the land for development ant constructing the pro posed buildings is ap proximately 16.8 million corallo said because all of the funding for the new buildings has not been se cured the board of trustees has not ap proved their construction he does however expect to seek approval at the january board meeting and to begin building in march 1989 construction will take about one and one-half years with completion expected around au gust 1990 the stadium which cost 590,000 to construct in 1914 was donated by alum nus charles p taylor who had previ the main entrance...will be saved and enshrined in a prominent area of the courtyard of the business college " scholarships by robyn suriano brown and white news writer forum members voted to pass the by laws to the new forum constitution in a meeting on tuesday in the univers ity center chairman of the forum restructure committee robert mills presented the by-laws which were passed without opposition or discus sion even though the final forum con stitution and its by-laws have been approved by the present forum mills explained the new forum itself will have to adopt the constitution and by laws at the convocation ceremony next week in his report university president peter likins stressed the importance of attendance by all forum members at the convocation ceremony dec 7 likins said he expects the constitu tion will pass without difficulty never theless he said the forum represen tatives need to be at the ceremony to give the constitution the credibility it would lack if you aren't there likins also encouraged continued student support for the south african scholarship project likins said now that students and faculty have mobil ized to provide support for the scholar ships it will soon be the university's turn and then the corporate commun ity in a report on the progress of the south african scholarship commit tee university chaplain hugh flesh er said the faculty has pledged 15,500 so far on the student side of the ledger he said the activities are many and varied the committee is discussing the possibility of having a concert next semester to help raise money for the scholarships it's still far away from being finalized explained flesher but it's one of the ideas the south african scholarship committee will be pursuing in the future flesher said the committee is also planning two educational projects for the upcoming semester currently the group is having a lehigh against apartheid button sale in the u.c flesher said i'm amazed and thrill ed at the kind of consciousness raising that's on campus however even with all the activity and plans to inform lehigh students of the evils of apar theid flesher said we are still just beginning in other business stuart jara 90 presented the proposed reforms for lehigh's judiciary system jara said the reforms will
