              th e brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol.loo n0.15 friday november 4 1988 215 758-4181 ruskin pokes fun at lu satirist comments on act 31 politics by adrienne tsang brown and white news writer dan ruskin-he's a comedian a pianist an actor a composer but foremost a political satirist tuesday night he presented an elec tion special in packard laboratory auditori um poking fun at topics ranging from act 31 to the presidential candidates to gun control the washington columnist drew applause when he asked the audience if they thought the political campaign has gone on too long i pledge allegiance to lehigh that i will notgo on too long about this campaign he said he kept his word speaking for an hour not only about the campaign but also about general happen ings at lehigh his one-man revue alternated playing the piano with comedy in his first song he banged away at the piano with his rendition of little town of bethlehem which drew applause and laughter from the audience in the little town of bethlehem we don't know what will be done we used to drink on campus until they passed act 31 he said going on to discuss act 31 ruskin delighted the audience by criticizing the presidential candidates people say that dan quayle is too inexperienced for a do nothing job and i think that bentsen was a little hard on him by saying you're no jack kennedy but he's been saying it to dukakis for months ruskin said he is tired of seeing dukakis making ges tures with his fists when he talks it looks like he is doing simultaneous sign language for the hearing impaired am i crazy or is it the longest dirtiest dullest campaign that's ever been everybody is worried about the greenhouse effect but i'm worried about the white house effect he continued neither of these guys have the stuff of greatness both have great stuff ness can't you just see it on election day as all of america goes eeney meeney miney mo whom do you prefer dukakis or bush ruskin asked it's like asking the man who's going to the electric chair whether he prefers ac or dc you have a choice of tweedle-dumb or tweedle-dumber joking about gun control as it is an import ant controversy in the campaign ruskin used political satirist dan ruskin b4vv pho ° ovmarykatesheridan ucod faculty find 4 freshmen guilty of shaving lu woman by susan barone brown and white sonkx writer and caroune west brown and white news editor the faculty appeals committee upheld mon day the suspensions of four male freshmen found guilty of an offense against a person for shaving the pubic hair of a female freshman with an electric razor the students were originally found guilty of the offense by the university committee on discipline ucod on oct 12 according to associate dean of students terrence curran the students acted on the basis of a practical joke and had not consider ed the seriousness of the situation the students were truly remorseful for their actions curran added according to the student who requested anonymity due to the nature of the offense she considers the incident to be sexual assault although curran said the victim was emo tionally upset she chose not to press charges outside the university the ucod suspended one student for one year and the other three for one semester the one student will be permit ted to return next fall while the other three may return in january she said it was pretty awful and i don't think they got a harsh enough punishment she said what do you have to do to get a harsher punishment they're really only out for one month when asked if she considered them to be remorseful although she has not had direct contact with them she said they were laughing about how lightly they got off before they left she said she didn't press charges outside of the university was because she did not want her parents to find out about the incident and they still are not aware of it she said she said truthfully i wish i had pressed charges because of how leniently they got off according to curran the university cannot accept the disregard for the privacy of a member of the community we are concerned that other individuals were aware that this practical joke was being contemplated but did nothing to stop the individuals from proceeding this incident shows the need for people to be assertive to stand up for what is right and not allow situations to get out of hand he added the incident was brought to tlie attention of biw photo by christine corcoran lehigh students witness halloween weekend murder in florida see story page 12 see ruskin page 8 see ucod page 7 sports men's and women's swim teams previewed - page 19 gridders look to close out unde feated home season page 20 lehigh production of our town reviewed page 13 debate team finishes in top 10 at harvard page 15 what's inside - news charges filed against party security guards page 3 senior helps handicapped with computer system — page 4
