council ifc decision to check all guests enter ing lehigh fraternity parties for univer sity id or proof that the individual is a guest of a lehigh student has been mixed among faculty staff and students with most of the opinions voiced being positive the policy was sent along with a letter of explanation from dean of students john smeaton to the deans students at lafayette muhlenberg kutztown east stroudsburg bucknell moravian and cedar crest college the letter explained that the intent of this policy is to exclude unaccompanied non-students from attending fraternity parties at lehigh theta chi president david hankins said i think it's a good idea to check ids at parties he said brothers checked ids at their thursday pubnite and satur day party hankins said it went pretty well we didn't have any townies he added that the reason there weren't any problems was because it was cold and the party was not crowded ids a hassle hankins said that because checking ids is such a hassle our first big open party weekend will make or break it the policy . as time goes by i don't think it's going to fly jim mccann lambda chi alpha pres ident said id checking works out pretty well he said something had to be done to cut down the number of students from other schools attending our par ties ' he said his house felt that checking for ids was a good idea and his broth ers were going to accept a policy for checking for ids before the ifc policy became official guests sneak in mccann suggested that students from other schools may try to get into a frater nity party without an id he said this is often accomplished by mentioning the name of a residence hall so that if they don't have an id they can say i don't want to go all the way down to m&m and get it mccann said often the brothers can tell who these people are because they say they're from dravo but pro nounce it wrong he said that he saw a problem with this policy which was not discussed at the ifc meeting if we try to go to parties at other schools we may not be allowed in he said the policy presents lehigh as too elite phi kappa theta president ed stark agreed that you can tell a townie but still felt a need to check for ids he said you keep the trouble out of the house instead of throwing it out later on the other hand sigma nu president john drago said i don't really approve of it it could cause more problems because not all lehigh students carry ids he said the majority of his house believed that they should not check eve ryone but that they should check anyone who looked drunk at their party friday they ended up throwing out some peo ple to keep the party straight each house should do whatever they think is necessary drago said because people from lehigh will still cause trouble phi delt didn't check scott smith president of phi delta theta said his house did not check ids at their party last friday night although they always weed people out of parties we're not going to check girls for ids although his house is not currently checking ids smith said we will use ids as a tool if we need it if they guests are going to cause problems we're going to throw them out no matter who they are michael krinick vice president of alpha epsilon pi commented i went out on the hill thursday friday and sat urday nights and didn't see anyone turned away saturday i went to three parties two forced him to turn over the bag he had stolen from elderly irene kos telnik moments before the kappa sigma fraternity brothers james mccabe wil liam james and chuck virgi nia were having lunch in the subway sandwich shop on the corner of fourth and new street when they witnessed a man grab a shopping bag containing kostelnik's purse as kostelnik struggled with the assailant she was dragged several feet down the sidewalk before letting go of the bag giv ing the man a chance to get away it was then that the trio took action when we saw him dragging the old lady chasing him was just the natural thing to do it was a natural reaction mccabe said the chase took them from the subway to brodhead avenue opinion favors wrestler aid by jcn ansbacher while many favor the deci sion to begin instituting athletic scholarships as a recruiting tool for wrestlers some want the scholarships spread across the lehigh sports program while women's basketball coach muffet mcgraw supports the decision overall she said it would be more fair if every sport had this opportunity now and not just wrestling in an effort to revive lehigh's waning wrestling program the university has changed its stand on financial aid for athletes and will allow wrestling recruits to be aided beyond need as an incentive to study and wrestle at lehigh david amidon lecturer of urban studies endorses the decision of president peter lik ins which was passed by the board of trustees executive committee on jan 10 i'm a wrestling fan he said the main thing is i think there is use for the university to be competi tive at a national level in some sport if our fees can no longer attract top wrestlers then i say give in and reconsider our policies the committee did it the right way by announcing that this would be in effect on a tem porary basis amidon con tinued however i think it would have been wise to draw the faculty into the process rather than it being all administrative social relations chairman james mcintosh said i'm con cerned that it alters the basic relationship between academ ics and athletics on the campus and i want to hear more about it from the president other than what i've read in the newspapers athletic coaches expressed concern for their own sports and hoped that this would have a positive effect on the future of athletics here mcgraw expressed concern that it may be tougher to recruit people may believe that the university will be giving scholarships not based on need to only men and that may hurt girls sports in the future she added that it probably wouldn't hurt academics we always recruit top scholars here and they won't lessen that i feel it is good for wrestling and would also be good for other sports like football it gives them an opportunity to get some quality people head football coach john whitehead stated i have no objection to getting quality by paying for it he added i was disappointed though that they just picked one sport and didn't include any other sports in it mark lieberman 80 two time national champion wrestler said the decision is a step in the right direction for the wrestling program he argued that the rising tuition caused less competition here in the last few years i've seen too many kids say i want to go to lehigh but i can't afford to it puts them in the position not to go to their first choice don't forget the kids we go after aren't only good athletes but are good students also i've seen them enhance the school by being student leaders we can't get them now because we can't offer them any money lieberman stated lehigh has to make a decision being excel lent in somthing on a national level is a very unusual thing — like our academic programs it's exciting for the students to be around it and the school become well-known for it lieberman noted that lehigh could have a good mid-college level wrestling program if they competed with schools like lafayette college bucknell university moravian college and muhlenberg college but it would be a sad loss for lehigh you'd be walking away from a fabulous tradition enjoyed by see purse page 5 see wrestling page 7
