lehigh university brown and white vol 95 — no 34 bethlehem pa friday february 17 1984 215 861-4184 university loses opportunity to host jackson by darren maloney and stuart silberman because of an apparent mis understanding and problem in communi cation the university allegedly lost a chance to host presidential candidate rev jessie jackson at stabler arena according to andrea monroe 84 vice president of the black students union bsu , a call last week to the president's office by a regional representative for jackson's campaign failed to reach uni versity president peter likins or secure definite arrangements consequently the representative mrs gary roberts called lafayette col lege and arranged for him to speak there she said in a memo dated wednesday likins said he was told sunday by monroe about jackson's visit to the area and the inter est in the arena he discussed the matter with other university officials to get opinions and details then called lafayette monday he finally reached college president david ellis tuesday to extend an invi tation to share sponsorship for a stabler event but was cordially turned down according to the memo herman kissiah dean of lafayette college said yesterday i don't think we re interested in sha ring it " assistant dean david portlock said jackson is for mally scheduled to speak on the morning of feb 25 at lafayette's alan p kirby field house and will be traveling to chi cago later that day representative arrives at uc monroe first became involved when jackson campaign representative gary roberts arrived at the bsu office in the university center saturday and was given her phone number when he said he was looking for campaign helpers according to monroe roberts said on the phone jackson was speaking at lafayette and added that she would probably want to know the reason why he's not speaking at lehigh " he said his wife had called the admin istrations of the university and lafayette on monday feb 6 and showed a page of dated type-written notes concerning conversations with an unidentified secretary of likins and richard fritz director of stabler athletic and convocation center mon roe said executive secretary of the president's office molly malone said she recalls talking to a jackson representative but was not sure of the exact date or words she used fritz acknowledges the call but disagrees with points in the notes that he is supposed to have said he also maintains mrs roberts called on thurs day feb 2 not the following monday according to the notes mrs roberts told the secretary her husband would like to make an appointment with likins to discuss the possibility of having jack son speak to the students of the lehigh valley that afternoon of feb 25 per haps at stabler when he came to the area the secretary in the notes then responded by raising the question — if one candidate is hosted will it be neces sary to host the others and asking her to call back later that afternoon the notes read the secretary said i don't think it is necessary to involve dr likins in this why don't you call stabler arena and see what they say i didn't get any feeling of any urgency from roberts malone said yester day she added that if the call was made on feb 2 likins would have been in seattle washington where he stayed until feb 4 and if the call had been made feb 6 he would have had a very tight schedule since he was leaving the next day to begin a four-day trip fritz gives account like malone fritz said he thought the call from mrs roberts was for general information i accepted the entire phone call as really a fact-finding mis sion . . never did she formally request to hold a date in this facility according to fritz the notes give the following account of the conversation with fritz i called mr richard fritz at stabler arena we had a lengthy conversation regarding the availability set-up neces sary and prices for such an event basi cally he suggested i find out what size crowd is to be expected and then make a decision on where the event should be held his feelings were that we would only get 400 to 500 students to participate and stabler would be too large making the group look even smaller than it was he based this on a similar event held in 1980 for john anderson he also sug gested that charging even a nominal fee transportation problem discussed by stuart silberman complaints about the transportation system from the university's main cam pus to the murray h goodman campus and the saucon married and graduate students smags housing were aired wednesday at an open meeting of the campus life committee of forum xiv a list of complaints from bill donahue supervisor of the rauch field house were read donahue could not be at the meeting but gave a list of his concerns to jeff brotman 85 chairman of the cam pus life committee donahue said that several students had complained to him about discourteous drivers and sug gested that the drivers should be required to display a photo with their name he said he was also concerned that the bus service to the goodman campus made it difficult for off-campus students and work-study students assigned to the field house to get back and forth from the main campus alam virk 86 who works at the field house said it really bothers me that there is no reliable transportation to the goodman campus mary beth dulcey 85 president of alpha gamma delta sorority complained that the buses do not follow their schedule closely enough when a bus leaves at five after the hour if a teacher runs over you have to be obnoxious and walk out she explained one graduate student who lives in smags said what happens during breaks and over the summer when the undergraduates leave the bus service is curtailed — that's the biggest com plaint we grad students have susan clapham 87 said that during the adam ant concert it was ridiculous down at the flag pole i waited for two buses and finally got a ride with a guy i knew diane moyer 86 a sister of gamma phi beta sorority said i've been there at the flag pole many times when peo ple weren't allowed on the van during the weekends because the driver wouldn't let the people squeeze in also suggested was the possibility of running the bus at night rather than the van to alleviate this problem chris christian manager of trans portation services answered the com plaints he said that transportation services have been around for seven or new social code discussed forum plans time for vote by brian rochlin laker lands b&w photo by george cook sir freddy laker brought his 43 years of aviation expe rience to packard lab auditorium wednesday night and advised aspiring entrepreneurs to take a chance because if you don't do it then laker said you will regret it compton 84 former interfraternity council president and chairman of the ad hoc committee of student leaders looking into the revision of the code the committee hopes to have the draft voted upon by the end of this semester or the beginning of next semester so that it can be put before the board of trustees in october compton said on monday the social policy subcom mittee of the forum xiv met to begin revision of the code the primary goal of the new code is to affect and maintain a high level of social awareness rather than only concentrating on the area of punishment according to a document prepared by the ad hoc committee the document emphasizes preventive rather than retaliatory measures compton said the committee is trying to de emphasize regulation and restriction and place the emphasis on the general population to enhance the awareness of what is and is not socially acceptable he continued according to the document the com mittee decided that the social code should be a document long enough to include all relevant topics but short enough for the average student to . be willing to read these goals could be accomplished within the confines of two written pages it states the new code would be broken into two parts the first section would contain a statement on students responsibility to uphold socially acceptable behavior center contract finally signed the contract for the purchase of the brith sholom community cen ter located at the corner of packer and brodhead avenues has finally been signed treasurer john woltjen said the university will pay an undisclosed sum and give a 5.6-acre plot of property in hanover township to the brith sholom congregation as part of the agreement plans for renovations of the building temporarily renamed packard lab
