night in his bethlehem home he was 85 years old at this time of sorrow we share with his family grief and profound regret in the loss cf a truly dedicated lehigh leader said university president peter likins at a meeting wednesday mom ing when i visited him recently on sept 26 he was as lively and courageous as he was when he was president he loved to talk about lehigh we'll miss him very much neville was the ninth president of the university and succeeded martin whi taker who died in 1960 he first came to the university in 1927 as assistant profes sor of chemistry and was promoted to head of the department in 1938 in 1949 he was named dean of the graduate school and was named vice president and provost in 1956 in october 1979 the university board of trustees named the major chemistry auditoriums building as harvey a neville hall at the building's dedica tion neville was referred to as a distin guished chemist teacher and university president who served the national scien tific community and american higher education in many ways by richard smith vice chairman of bethlehem steel corp and a member of the board of trustees according to the globe times proposal for fraternity house remains in planning stages by stuart silberman contrary to an article appearing in last tuesday's brown and white on the coloni zation of a black student fraternity next fall there has been some talk about it but nothing concrete yet according to william quay dean of students gregg cobbs 85 black students union bsu president called the story premature and added that we're the black students considering a frater nity still in the planning stages he said that they are working with quay and larry philippi assistant to the dean of students for fraternity and sorority affairs toward a colonization but we're not sure yet cobbs stressed a black fraternity on campus would make lehigh a little more appealing to minority students and that a chapter would form a basis for closer social interaction between minorities already here " he said just because it is called black doesn't mean it is all black and further explained that the fraternity just like all others at the university could not maintain any discriminatory clauses according to quay the university is taking a positive position toward a black fraternity he said the administration wants to do anything we can to give support to the black students — both edu cationally and emotionally quay added that a fraternity of this type would help add to the diversity of social alternatives at the university philippi explained that after the char tering of alpha epsilon pi aepi in 1979 the board of trustees made an unofficial decision not to recognize any more fraternities philippi stressed there was never a vote but a feeling that we have enough opportunities for men to join national social fraternities he continued that black students are a special case and that since we are try ing to provide support mechanisms for minority students a black fraternity becomes a possibility another issue black students have to confront is whether their own fraternity will alienate them from the rest of the university cobbsaid i don't think that will happen philippi said that most of the black students feel alienated now and that he did not know what would happen if a black fraternity colonized on campus recognition hopes remain for phi kappa psi group by jonathan anshac her if they allow a black fraternity we are going to accuse the university of discriminating against us we have nothing against an all-black frater nity but the university should recog nize our principles also bob lubus 85 president of phi kappa psi frater nity said larry philippi assistant to the dean of students for fraternity and sorority affairs has not canceled the possibility of an all-black student fra ternity there is a chance that we will let a black fraternity colonize very soon philippi said lubus however feels it would be unfair to recognize an all-black fraternity and not phi kappa psi we're not giving it up said lubus phi kappa psi is a colony the university will not recognize as an official fraternity we're trying to make ourselves strong enough and then make another attempt at gaining recognition lubus added according to philippi new fraterni ties will probably not colonize here in the future except possibly a black fraternity this includes phi kappa psi it is felt that there are enough opportunities to join social fraterni ties on campus the recognition of additional groups implies that we have to provide resources for them this includes housing this would also increase competition with the other fraternities over rushing there fore it is in our best interests not to approve of any new fraternities philippi said although phi kappa psi will not be allowed to function as a fraternity the members can still enjoy the same freedoms as any living group it would be the same as if a bunch of guys wanted to get together and do things together they can live off campus together without any prob lems philippi said however many restrictions will be placed on what phi kappa psi can do philippi said they can't actively rush and recruit people reserve any university space participate in intramurals register parties use lehigh's name on anything or use erickson named new assistant dean by khunda stonek mark erickson has been named the new university assistant dean for resi dence life according to marsha duncan vice president for student affairs he will take over the position
