since that time lempert and the other members of the informal committee have been trying to keep the matter of proportional representation before the student body last week a letter was writ ten to the brown and white pre senting the views of the commit tee petitions asking for a refer endum by which the student body could decide what type of govern ment is desired were sent to all the dorms and fraternities and were posted on bulletin boards for town men a clarification of the stand of the committee is presented in a letter to the editor on the edi torial page in today's paper elections coming for student heads anyone in his sth 6th or 7th semester who submits his point list to the arcadia office by thursday evening will be eligible to compete in the ap proaching election of the five man committee according to harry kohl who heads arca dia's election committee lehigh will go to the polls on september 26th and 27th next thursday and friday to choose its student government quintet for next semester plans are being completed for balloting places to be set up in the alumni memorial building and at the arcadia office in drown hall the polls will be open from 9 00 a m until 5 00 p m on each of the two elec tion days — support the pep rally — t c to sponsor town cafe dance by el rotolo so favorable has been the reac tion to town council's new dance idea the town cafe that a sim ilar affair has been scheduled for 8:30 p m saturday sept 21 in drown hall in all probability this will be t c.'s last open-to-the-public so cial event of the semester admis sion will be free to members and non-members may purchase social membership which will be valid for the remainder of the term for 75 cents drown hall will again be decor ated to resemble a night club and tables olympic game staff elbert f caraway assistant di rector of intercollegiate athletics has been named a member of the united states 1948 olympic wrestl ing committee by asa bushnell secretary of the eastern intercol legiate athletic associations caraway will attend a meeting of the committee on sept 23 and 24 at the headquarters of the uni ted states olympic association in the new york athletic club he has been invited to attend the olympic semicentennial dinner on sept 23 at the hotel pennsylvania housing for married students bethlehem pa wednesday september 18 1946 5 centt ist football rally friday afternoon vol liii no 38 lu has good cut record class cutting by lehigh stud dents has not marred the all-uni versity records for attendance john d leith assistant dean of undergraduates in an interview last friday expressed satisfaction with class attendance for this and last semester although there has been more cutting this semester than there was last spring such a condition was anticipated dean leith stated that roughly 50 of the cuts are charged to 5 of the student body the other 50 are distributed very thinly over the remaining 95 as of august first three fourths of the men either had no cuts or only one that number has gone down since the figures were com piled but they show an important trend at the beginning of last semes ter the faculty adopted the rule continued education at lehigh and are merely protect ing their right to re-admission or they will not be discharged as soon as they expect an average of nine applications for re-admission have been made each coordinator for the national printing ink research institute at lehigh before a meeting of the international relations club held last friday at 7:30 p m in drown hall revelation of russian plans for the utilization of liquid oygxen for expediting the blast furnace pro cess in the manufacture of steel was cited by dr zettlemoyer as positive proof of russian coopera tion citing the accomplishments of the national printing ink re search institute dr zettlemoyer stated that the promotion of inter national cooperation in science and engineering can be obtained through the exchange of research reports with the various nations having witnessed the sessions of the annual convention of the american chemical society held last week in chicago dr zettle moyer was able to report that one of the convention's highlights was the approval of an appropriation of 25,000 for the support of the united nations educational sci entific and cultural organization in sponsoring the exchange of sci entists arcadia cabinet is in charge of the arrangements for the rally the rally will begin ex actly at 4:30 so as to give every body with afternoon labs plenty of time to get to the scene of action on time — present student government when the new arcadia constitu tion was presented to its members for discussion and ratification lempert suggested that a system of proportional representation be in stituted he was voted down by the other members of arcadia last call point lists of second semester juniors and first semester seniors who would like to be considered for election to odk honorary senior
