involving a size reduction of the hody could not be voted on at tuesday's open meeting because a quorum of members was not present the size reduction from 60 students and 60 faculty seats to 30 of each though strongly supported by executive forum members was criticized by other indi viduals at the meeting after much discussion and debate co chairman john tarduno 83 called for a vote the vote did not take place because a quorum of forum members which was called for by david leahigh busi ness school instructor was not present a quorum is 30 percent of the student members 30 percent of the faculty members and two administration members not including any vacant seats bob raffo 84 chairman of priorities planning and development committee pointed out that the failure to take a vote due to lack of a quorum was probably the best argument there is for the reduction in size raffo along with members of the inte rim committee on reorganization of the forum presented positive aspects of a size reduction presently the size of the forum is unwieldy and consequently ineffective raffo cited recommendations made by forums x and xi which suggested that the size of the forum be reduced significantly there has been a 66 percent decline in students desire to be elected forum members a 600 percent increase in poor participation as reflected by censure and reprimand let ters and a 6 percent increase in non elected member participation in the past three years he said raffo also mentioned that there are presently 18 vacant faculty seats the trend is clear both students and faculty no longer wish to participate as elected members of the forum furthermore the size of the forum is prohibiting he concluded raffo also emphasized that the consti tution change is only a reduction in the size of the elected body the level of non elected participation as always will be b&w photo by dave skalier robert raffo metal fence utilized again at lafayette by louis gombocz a wooden snow fence will not be installed as originally planned at lafayette's fisher field for tomorrow s iibth meeting with lehigh according to dean of stu dents at lafayette herman kissiah assistant to the dean of students at lehigh larry philippi said the wooden picket fence was intended to serve as a psychological barrier to keep students off of the ball field until the end of the game how ever kissiah said the fence idea was scrapped because it the wooden fence was too easy to go through philippi noted that at the last game held at fisher field univer sity students trampled the four foot-high metal fence which has since been repaired at a cost of 3,000 to the university on saturday the gates to the metal fence will be closed for the duration of the game said kissiah job-interview practice challenged by jim creedon a university faculty member has said that the university placement office which allows moravian college students to obtain job interviews at the univer sity should give first crack to lehigh students stuart webster chairman of the department of accounting and law said that in a letter to eugene seeloff director of career planning and place ment services he urged the placement office to consider university students first and if there is room to then allow moravian students to interview as a result of a long-standing agree ment between the university and mora vian college moravian students have been able to use the university's place ment services in order to interview with companies that will not visit the mora vian campus according to seeloff options for keep ing the practice in check were worked out during a meeting wednesday between seeloff and charles doherty director of placement at moravian seeloff said the meeting was just the first step toward redesigning the prac tice the options are in keeping with the spirit of cooperation between the two institutions seeloff said he added that he hoped that a mutually beneficial arrangement could be worked out a total of 78 interviews were taken at the university by moravian students last year the number has increased this year with 100 interviews taken by mora tew people attend open hearings by lisa paparone the open hearings of the university committee on discipline have been attended this semester by a few people but usually only those associated with participants in the case according to robert cohen associate dean of students the opening of discipline hearings is a new aspect of the recently rewritten law of the campus before the hearings were closed unless the defendant requested that it be open but now the hearings are open and by exception closed cohen said an ad hoc committee of the faculty rewrote the law of the campus which was then reviewed for a year using both faculty and student input the new edi tion was adopted by the board of trus tees last semester according to stinson stroup assistant professor of education administration reasons for the switch to open hear ings mentioned by stroup who was involved in the revision include prob lems of two years ago there was a lack of confidence in the discipline system there was hope that the new method might demonstrate to people that the system works stroup said he added discipline at the university should not be just punishment it should also be an educational function the committee felt that there had been a number of problems causing a lack of confidence in the system stroup added one way to address the problem is to show that the system works and the way to show that it works is to have it the hearings open stroup said if the hearing is to be held in the uni versity center the time and room number are listed with the open hear ing announcement on the schedule of events bulletin board on the
