lehigh university brown and white vol 94 — no 16 bethlehem pa friday october 29 1982 215)861-4184 off the wall ib&w photo by rob weisstuch the mirrored walls of the mudd building reflect a gray autumn day along with a slightly warped whitaker lab social chairmen voice mixed reaction to patrol by kathy goldstein opinions ranging from super to not very realistic to stupid and absurd were offered by fraternity social chair men about the university's party patrol system most of the party patrollers have been very reasonable according to one social chairman but some seem to think they're some kind of vigilantes party patrollers are not responsible for shutting parties down they are not to enforce but to observe according to larry philippi assistant to the dean of students he added that patrollers have been told to give complete information on their reports and to be specific about violations the food social regulation is the most complained about regulation accord ing to philippi keeping food out for the length of a party seemed to be the main problem for many houses some social chairmen felt that the patrol's warning system — a house is warned that food should be put out and is checked later before the patrol will write them up is very fair since there is a give-and-take between the patrol and the houses social chairmen of other houses said they have been unjustly treated and improperly warned by the patrol one social chairman said that his house was reported and found guilty for having no food out at an interfraternity council ifc cocktail party he said that the patrol warned him at 6 20 p.m ( 10 min utes before the party was to end that there was no food he claimed that his house was reported even though food was then brought out because the patrol did not re-check until after the party had ended a brother from one house reported that two women from the party patrol come to the bar one night after taps had been kicked and asked for beer the brothers said no and explained that they were off tap he claimed that the women then begged the brothers for beer the women were recognized as party patrol members and were asked to leave the house he said he added that brothers in the house felt as if they were being entrapped i don't believe that any of my party patrol would do that larry philippi said a house would not be found guilty if circumstances were really that way he added another concern of the social chair men was that party patrollers may be more likely to write up a house if they do not have friends there or if they do not like the house for some reason one social chairman thought a student monitoring-students system could never work for this reason philippi disagreed that favoritism is a concern because patrollers are paid uni versity employees and if caught doing that would be fired immediately if the patrol was a voluntary one i'd be afraid of favoritism being shown he added philippi also explained that it is impos sible for one patroller to exert any kind of force over the system patrollers fill out a form-like report at every house visited giving complete information about the circumstances at the party he said editor's note names of fraternities and their social chairmen have not been printed since violations are currently pending for some of these houses heath on return visit here examines masculine image by teresa kilcullen on a recent return visit to the univer sity a haverford college psychology professor who two years ago analyzed the university's social atmosphere attributed many of the current social problems to the masculine image of the school douglas heath compiled the results of his findings two years ago based on a survey of 318 students faculty and administration as an objective review of the institutional climate of the univer sity heath's interest was centered on two major issues the effect of the mas culine image of the university on the students especially females and the degree of faculty involvement and interaction more women tend to see lehigh as competitive conservative demanding hardworking conventional and intense . . . also more women than men wished the university were more caring heath wrote from this data he hypo thesized that lehigh has expected its women students to accommodate to the dominant ethos of the institution and that many of the women feel the pressure to measure up much more than do men the only way the university is coed is that they admitted women said maria clement 83 a member of the male/fe male relations committee reviewing the heath report there are no facilities for women it's the same school that was here before women were admitted one reason for the dissatisfaction with 200 interested in sigma phi selection expected by nov 5 by michele gerencher more than 200 people have shown an interest in becoming brothers of the sigma phi fraternity to re-open next fall . according to assistant to the dean of students larry philippi the sigma phi alumni corporation closed the house this semester for finan cial reasons the house will remain closed during the spring semester philippi said he thinks the 35 members needed to fill the house will be selected by next friday philippi said he explained the oppor tunity to start the new chapter at an interfraternity council ifc rush meet ing earlier this month and took the names of those interested after that it was campus scuttlebutt he said with people calling and visiting his office philippi said 19 groups of eight or more people have shown interest and some groups have as many as 35 people in them individuals can submit their names for consideration but philippi said at this point most individuals have formed into groups philippi said he met with and inter viewed half of the groups on tuesday night and interviewed the remaining groups last night at the meetings philippi said he explained the selection process the pledging process financial considera tions and alumni involvement to pros pective groups philippi also distributed a personal data sheet which asked each applicant to explain his reasons for want ing to start a new fraternity and the image he would want a new fraternity to project interviews and personal data sheets will be used to help determine which groups will work well together philippi said the alumni want a group that works and that is going to be successful ' ' philippi said he is not trying to solicit any more candidates there is so much competition there are already so many people that are going to get turned down he said final selection of the 35 candidates will be made by the sigma phi alumni although philippi is handling the preli minary process university security system uses group combination by michele
